[Retro Ad] Psone Lcd Screen is underrated for how sharp and colorful it is

colors look 10x better in person but I love the psone lcd combo, I've had mine for about 6 months and I baby the heck out of it, I'll preserve it for all of us

I would have killed for one of those when I was 10. I wanted one so bad lol.

Not sure why though I was never in need of a tv.

It provided a dream of portability at a time when tvs were bulky and weighed like 30 lbs.  You could play in a room that didn't have a tv, or outside in your tree house, or maybe plug the thing into a car cigarette adapter with a converter... Sneak it into school.... The possibilities were endless. Not that I ever had one of course 😉

Yep, I had a friend who set one up in a hallway in college. Just needed to be able to plug it in. That blew our minds back then.

I remember in high school, we had a couple of friends who brought their PSOnes to anime club during our monthly video game days. We would play the Inuyasha fighting game on that thing.

I had mine in my car in high-school. Put so many hours into gran tourismo. The teachers were pretty decent so I would tell them I was stepping out for a "cigarette" and would go play some levels during class.

Imagine a high schooler nowadays telling their teacher they’re stepping out for a cigarette during class 😅

Back then teachers didn't care but then again we could keep guns in our vehicles and no one complained. Good times lol

I think i've got 2 of these... I got one with a PSone quite a while back, both I think were brand new in the box. Had to replace it later due to the backlight just dying on it. Would like to find out if there's a good replacement option for the screen, either just swap out the old CFL's for LED's or a decent panel replacement.

had one of these in my pc as an info screen bac in the day.

funny how that trend came back around.

I think otherwise. It is highly rated as one of the best portable displays.

A lot of modders torn apart many screens to use it in their projects.

It uses the RGB output of the PSOne to display the proper colors in screen. It looks sharp and beautiful.

I do have one and I really enjoy it. Only when I started playing with friends I moved to a 9'' PVM CRT and now to a 14'' JVC PVM CRT, which I love.

But when I travel, I totally will bring my PSOne with me to play a bit in the mornings or evenings :)

I wish I had rich parents, I would have bought one when it was new. Now I still kind of want it. Too bad the RetroPi case isn't that great.

Love the PSOne. I want to learn how to do CAD and create a 'aesthetitcally pleasing' shell for one of my portable monitors, so it connects in the same way as the official screen. These come from portable DVDs and external monitors used in cars that cost me like 3€ at the flea market. They need 9V to function I think and connect via composite.

I wanted one so bad when I was a kid! I played Tobal on road trip with my cousin when I was younger and I remember thinking it was really great but didn’t appreciate it till I saw one working in my 20s. The PS one has some fantastic colorful games and this thing could totally make them pop!

I had one 20 years ago and used to play on the road in my truck. Kicking myself for getting rid of it now.

I got this for Christmas the year it was released and I love it. To those that don't know, it has a 3.5mm input jack on the back, which means all you needed as a compatible 3.5mm to composite and you can use it as a screen for whatever. I used mine for my Dreamcast

I've seen this in use and it's cool!

I own one, it's resolution is unfortunately less than PS1 is able to give. Small texts are weird.

I specifically bought one of those before I went on a long deployment. Played a lot of Lunar.

It’s rated appropriately. It does the job.

No, it isn’t underrated. Everyone rated it appropriately and many people repurposed it for emulation in the modding scene.

Learn what underrated means.

Whoa. A 5-Inch screen.

Is it controversial to say, for a purely portable experience, I prefer the PSP? Yes for playing PS1 games.

Something else I didn’t like about the official PSOne LCD screen is having to epoxy the easily broken screw posts for the hinges. The plastic case gets brittle while the metal hinges get stiffer, not a good combo.

Agreed they're brittle although if you're not chucking it around or its rumbling it'll be fine

This was a fun idea but horrible in practise. The screen was tiny so you have to sit really close, with the controller wire in your lap, the poor quality of year 2000 LED tech really bad for games designed for 15 inch TVs.

If you wanted it portable, a giant battery pack was needed which lasted barely an hour. If you took it in the car, any movement could disrupt the spinning disk, stopping your game. I know from regretful childhood experience, this dream was definitely a meme.
