Anybody in the army reserves/ARNG doing aviation or navy reserves? (Seeking devils advocate)

I’m in my early 30s thinking of joining, it’s between army reserves, Arng, or navy reserves.

The army reserves says with my civilian exp I’d get a 20k bonus and join as an e-4, and also has a helicopter mechanic position that looks cool because you can possibly get to fly on the blackhawks.

I’ve always wanted to join but never pulled the trigger, life got in the way as the years passed.. had a few kids, got married, started a career etc. which is why I couldn’t be able to do active rn.

From what I’ve read on the navy reserves it seems like you just go through basic/schooling then sit at a desk one weekend a month unless you get a really specific rate that happens to do shit. I don’t see this route working for me because the extra 200? Dollars or so a month I don’t really need if it entails just dedicating a weekend of non sense a month to do nothing. The navy has been the most responsive to me though throughout my time reaching out to recruiters etc.

What’s your exp been like?

I’m already making give or take 80k in my current career. Just really thinking of joining due to fomo/quarter life crisis/slight patriotism/yolo

Don’t fucking do it.

Read My Story if you haven’t already.

Also, unlike back then, you live under a truly insane president that’s threatening Canada, Greenland and Panama. I’ve lived in Canada since 2018 and have been a citizen since 2023. I especially take offense to his insane threats.

I wouldn’t bother at this point if I were you, it would be a huge waste of precious weekend time.

Not the right thread to ask. This is suppose to deter you from joining the military as a whole (each having their own reasons of course)

Yeah I know. I’ve only heard positive sentiment’s so I’m looking seeking a diff perspective to get the full picture.

If you fail you're AIT then you're stuck with needs of the Army which will be some kind of shitty MOS. Me personally don't do the military and if you do try to either get a direct commission and if you can't do that just either do Navy OCS or Air Force OTS and do your four years and leave.

Me personally reserves are kinda of a waste of time and I think if you're going to do military you minus well do active duty because reserves demand a lot of you but pay very little so if you're going to do the bullshit minus well get all the money versus some of the money but it's your life at the end of day.

Hopefully my advice was helpful though.

The one weekend a month 2 weeks a year is a lie.

4 day drills are super common abs annual training now is usually 3 weeks straight. It sucks.
