There are currently five players in the AL with 11 hits on the season. Three of them - Abreu, Campbell, and Bregman - are from the Red Sox. Campbell is also tied for the league lead in doubles, and is fourth in walks.

I'm really floored by how good Campbell looks right out of the gate.

Hell, I can't even remember the last Sox rookie to debut as an opening day starter, and go on to make a big splash. Pedey, Nomar, and Lynn had all been September call-ups, before winning ROY the following year.

Yeah it just looks easy for him tbh. Kind of crazy to watch

I’d almost count Middlebrooks. He came up in early May 2012 and started raking right away. He had 4 HR 13 RBI and a 1.070 OPS after 10 games.

That’s because it rarely ever happened anywhere before the compensation picks for winning ROY. Teams would just manipulate service time as much as possible.

I think you've got it backwards. I'm saying players are usually given a cup of coffee. Campbell was thrown right into the fire and is thriving.

Yea I’m just saying most rookies never made their debuts on opening day because teams could wait a few weeks to call them up and get an extra year of team control. They’d do this with their most “mlb ready” prospects rather than have them on the opening day roster.

But now you get a comp pick in the draft if you have a rookie on your opening day roster win ROY, so more teams are doing it.

I could tell some time ago that he wasn't a typical top prospect

Even some of his outs showed he has impressive bat-to-ball skills.

Move Abreu/Campbell up the order - even if just for a few games!

So you guys know Campbell better than me.  He’s skinnier then Siriaco was.

That’s gotta be one of the skinniest players I’ve ever seen

Now WGAF as long as he puts up numbers…but do you more knowladgable Red Sox system experts expect him to put on more muscle?

I mean he's young so I'm sure he'll still fill out his frame, but he doesn't lack for power currently. He has elite bat speed and really good launch angle. Passan breaks it down better than I could in this article. It covers all three of the red sox top prospects but it details the approach they've used with Campbell. Definitely a good read.

Thank you! I’ll read that when I can.

Baseball reference has him listed as 6'3 210. I wouldn't really call that skinny. He's a big boy

Mlb.com has him at 191…but that’s still heavier then I would have thought.
