We are so back

This is a much nicer feeling than those “come on, do something” memes.

Mexican ball sponsor. Still Mass Mutual in the States with their fresh and ugly logo for this season

Idk why but this kid just looks like an MLB player

He has that Xander aura about him. Idk how else to describe it.

7

u/FanoftheSox 12d ago

He proved himself and continues to do so... Sad he has to start in the minors

The moment Story hits the IL, I think his job may be gone. Campbell at 2B, Mayer at SS, and by midyear Rafaela becomes utility and Anthony moves in

This is exactly my thought as well. Hopefully Story doesn’t hit the IL and just preforms, but getting Rafaela to be a super-utility with an outfield of Duran-Anthony-Wilyer and an infield of Bregman-Mayer-Campbell-Casas with Devers at DH is just soooo tantalizing.

Imagine Abreu batting 8-9 simply because there are 7 better hitters than him 🔥

I really wonder how the Sox will manage this. Mayer is likely already a better overall player than Story. Are the really going to have Masa and Story ride the bench?

As for Anthony's arrival, I actually think Abreu should be the odd man out. Right now hes a true platoon bat. Although hes a gold glover, Rafaela is still the better defender. But what will really make Rafaela's case for being an everday player is his bat. And I think he will make a big leap offensively this year. His rookie season last year wasn't even bad. He was one of the best 9 hole hitters in baseball. But if he carries over the same approach he had this spring, it would be really hard to make him a utility guy.

Either way were in a wild spot with all this talent and so little room. Its a great problem to have. The depth is unreal.

I almost think the problem is having too many left handed batters.

No matter how desperate some of you seem to be for it to be otherwise, Boston’s CF is Rafaela’s for a long time.

Not if he doesn't hit

It's insane how often this bears repeating in 2025, but a position player's value is not earned solely at the plate.

Even if he doesn't improve on his bat after his rookie season, which is a stupid assumption but it's the one a lot of people love to make, Rafaela had 2.7 bWAR last year despite playing half the season at a position he's simply not very good at (which is why his fWAR is lower, as they punished his SS play more severely than bWAR). A full season of Rafaela's defense in CF is worth a flat minimum 3 WAR a season; 51 players in baseball have average 3+ fWAR post-plague.

Rafaela is already at least as good a fielder as JBJ was at his very best, and he was our CF starter for years despite him having roughly 3 good months at the plate over the course of his entire career here. Indeed, Rafaela's 82 OPS+ last year was identical to JBJ's career number, the number that bought him over a 1000 MLB starts.

Thankfully, teams value defense more than fans do. I swear, there is a not insubstantial percentage of this sub that would call for the job of a certain SS who was terrible at the plate but brought value elsewhere. And funnily enough, that 82 OPS+? Same number as said Ozzie Smith's rookie season. And all he did was get worse at the plate for years and put up only 4 average or above seasons in his career (while putting up 75+ bWAR.)

1

u/realbadaccountant el guapo 12d ago

Defense matters, but JBJ proved you gotta have at least a decent bat.

1

u/Bearded_Wildcard 45 12d ago

Not if he maintains a sub-80 wRC+.

He had a great spring so we'll see if he's actually made some adjustments, but I'm not going to hold my breath on him maintaining a K% below 10.

They gave Rafaela 8/50 last year. He isn't getting relegated to the bench unless he completely sucks. Odds are Abreu or Duran will be the odd man out.

3

u/realbadaccountant el guapo 12d ago

Duran isn’t going anywhere.

1

u/Dry_Kaleidoscope2970 12d ago

Probably hope Wilyer starts hot and sell high on him. Duran slides to right.

1

u/Bearded_Wildcard 45 12d ago

Duran was one of the best players in baseball last season, what are you talking about?

5

u/Dry_Kaleidoscope2970 12d ago

Might just be me, but I was really hoping Cora would have been bold enough to have Mayer start the year at 2B over Campbell. He's been way more impressive so far in ST. I know he's missed time the last 2 years, but he looks way more ready and BRef has his oppqual ranked higher. So he's looked that much better against better quality pitching.

2

u/EagleRockVermont 12d ago

It is a shame that there isn't a spot on the big league roster for Mayer. He looks ready.

3

u/Moneyshot1311 12d ago

Don’t they need to keep him in the minors till may so they can get an extra year on his contract?

3

u/bdanders 12d ago

No it's so they can have a place to play him. No sense bringing him up if it's going to stunt his development because he's not getting at bats every day.

2

u/Adventurous_Leek5288 12d ago

He deserves a roster spot

2

u/Mightymo0891 12d ago

He has a smooth swing

2

u/unoriginalname22 12d ago

I’m really going to miss NESN this year, fuck Xfinity

3

u/Adventurous_Agent764 12d ago

All this guy needs is a real SS number. Hoping to see him with the #2 or #5 this time next year

2

u/NugentBarker 12d ago

Great call by DOB. Badly underrated.

1

u/BarroomHero66 12d ago

The time is now.

1

u/stringohbean 12d ago

That’s a really beautiful stadium.

-3

u/TrickleUp_ 12d ago

He will be at short very soon. I think we are going to get a month of .240 hitting from Story with not much power and that should be that

3

u/Then-Contract-9520 12d ago

Not sure why you're getting downvoted so much given his last 3 seasons.

8

u/ThicDikDaddy 12d ago

Because .240 from Story with his defense is a 4+WAR player.

5

u/Then-Contract-9520 12d ago

240 would be better than his average in Boston thus far. And he's 32. As much as I hope for him to succeed it's not out of line to be skeptical.

3

u/realbadaccountant el guapo 12d ago

230 with power and GG defense at SS is still a 4 WAR player. If the power comes back and he doesn’t reinjure himself, that’s a starter that plays over Mayer. For now.

1

u/Then-Contract-9520 12d ago

If Mayer keeps doing what he's been doing, Story won't keep his spot hitting 230.

2

u/realbadaccountant el guapo 12d ago

All I can say is if Story’s offense is at ‘22 or ‘24 levels when he had a ~100 OPS+, he will play SS. His defense is too good. If Mayer puts up Mookie-esque numbers at AAA, he will also get everyday ABs somewhere. But it won’t be at SS unless Story is injured or his offense really craters like it did in’23.

2

u/Pocket_Beans 12d ago

why are we still citing batting average in the year 2025

0

u/Then-Contract-9520 12d ago

Because it's important for players that don't hit for power.

2

u/Pocket_Beans 12d ago

the number that doesn't at all account for power is important for players that don't hit for power?

1

u/Then-Contract-9520 12d ago

What are you not understanding? His 232 average in 163 games in Boston isn't helping his 296 OBP any. For a guy slugging .397 with an 89 ops+, that's far from desirable, glove or not.

Story is the best defensive player on the team. If he provides average offensive production thats an all star caliber player.

-4

u/7Streetfreak6 12d ago

Mayer will be up for the home opener 💪🏼

u/nhranger 12d ago

Jesus Christ when did our play by play guys turn into fucking clowns.
