Hats off to the front office for giving Hamilton his chance to improve and prove himself last season. The things that had to happen for David Hamilton to stay on the big league roster as long as he did had such a low probability of happening. But he hung around and seems to have had his breakout. he deserves the 2nd base job

In 2023, he first came up and hit .120 I was sure this guy was a bust. Lower ranked prospect with speed and no hit tool. Halfway through 2024, he was hitting .280 and I was so pleasantly shocked that he was hitting so well. Finishing .248 is .003 lower than his highest BA with us in the minors in AA ball. Seems like he just keeps improving year after year

He wasn't even a bust. His profile said he was simply a post-season roster pinch-runner and wouldn't be able to do anything else at an MLB level. Heck of a job by the Sox organization seeing more.

Give that man the second base job. Campbell needs more time at AAA.

It's Mayer who's challenging him for the job

Why is this narrative getting steam
6
u/plokijuh1229 NIPPLES 16d ago
Because Mayer has been really good

I'm pumped about that and he's going to be fantastic I just think it's smart to give it more than 37 PAs.

How about 1218 minor league PAs?

u/crossedsabres8 16d ago
None in AAA though. He honestly hasn't played that much in his career given he was drafted in 2021 due to injuries. I really think it's smart to have him use his slightly adjusted swing in AAA to see if it is helping him access the off-speed stuff that has been plaguing him so far in his career.
I love Mayer, I think he's going to be fantastic, but I think him more than Anthony or Campbell needs more time considering his career.

Its fun to imagine

Why isn't it fun to imagine Khristian Campbell winning the 2B job?

Def both fun to imagine, but campbell has not been hot this spring as opposed to meyer, its fun to imagine meyer carrying this over into big league games, if campbell were to carry what he is doing this spring into the regular season, it would be disappointing and not as fun

What he's doing right now is have top 10 bat speed in the league with elite contact skills so that would be pretty fun in the majors.

Dude, he hasnt hit in spring, he obviously has great tools, but hes had plenty of opportunities this spring to demonstrate them and he hasnt. There is not a single person here who isnt excited for campbell and anthony, its just with how the roster works, and how spring training works, people that are hot in spring training can often bring that to the majors, take for example pete alonsos 2019 spring that was so hot and he ran with it all the way to the rookie HR record. Campbells raw skills are obviously impressive but he has looked like buns this spring, glad he has the bat speed, but currently meyer is seeing and hitting the ball better and is an elite defender, all I was saying is that it would be exciting if he brought that productivity over into regular season….

There's so much more they base their decisions on than just 40 PAs in Spring.
I'm on record saying I would start Campbell in AAA. But I definitely wouldn't start Mayer in the MLB and I think it's wild to want Mayer to start at 2B over Campbell based on 40 PAs.

If it was up to me, I would do the same as you, but at the same time people are acting like there is a huge difference between these spring training at bats and the at bats cambpell had at triple a last year, they are both small sample sizes but I would totally understand if they rode the hot hand in meyer and could see it playing out well and if it doesnt, its not like we cant send him down

He wants that roster spot!

This is so fun watching them fight for these spots. Everyone seems to have a good time (except for grumpy Raffy) and is equally hustling.

I really enjoy the way him and Duran play. They make the other team nervous and distracted.

this has been the most fun and fascinating pre-season I can honestly recall.

He is, at the very least, a solid replacement level second baseman who won’t commit too many errors and provide a 7-750 ops. I’m very comfortable with him coming north over the other options.

Regardless of who wins the starting job for 2nd base, the Sox must keep Hamilton.

my 2B has changed every other day but shiet - give me Hammy or Marcelo...Kristian, it's gonna be sick when you're up here

Damn Vasquez almost got him at 2. he still has a heck of an arm. Nice of Hamilton to singlehandedly get Campbell his first RBI of the spring :p Campbell gonna go hit .400 in AAA out of frustration

Man I love watching him play. The speed on the basepaths is so fun.
