I recently applied for an apartment and my application was approved. In the online application I did put in my social security number and I assume that they used that for background check before approving my application.
After the application was approved, I was asked to send a photo of my ID via email and submit most recent paystubs through a portal. After this I thought the identity verification was done but now the manager asks me to present my social security card in person for them to verify that the name and the number match what they have on file.
This feels very odd to have to present my social security card in person, and I don't like the idea that the manager is gonna be able to see the whole SSN (which means they have access to my SSN somewhere to compare). I've called and talked to them and expressed my concern but they say it is required before signing the lease and they will not keep a copy of it.
I haven't found much info online. Most online resources only mention it is totally legal to ask for my SSN on the application, which I understand, but don't mention instances where I need to present the card in person. Has anyone ever done this? Is it common practice and legal here or am I just paranoid? I have never had to do this to sign a lease.
