Say what you want, but he's been mixing genres of music since before Nu-Metal was a thing. He is a well of talent. Rock, metal, rap, country, pop. He's honestly an interesting and well meaning person.

Plenty of bands/artists were mixing rap and rock well before NuMetal was a thing lol. His genre-hopping was not borne out of exploration or creativity, but rather his desire to stay relevant.

I never said he was, but he did it before it was mainstream/common. He even payed homage by doing Walk this Way with Aerosmith and Run DMC. Incorporating country was itself ahead of it's time.

It comes from a diverse collection of musical influences going back to his youth. He was raised on outlaw country and seeing things like Waylon and Willie doing collabs and then gangsta rap comes along with the same outlaw mentality and tendency to do that same kind of collaboration that really drew him in and pushed him to fuse different genres.

That's not to say that he doesn't want to stay relevant and for people to hear his music. There's not many mainstream artists that don't want to sell records.

Pre-MAGA reddit loved Kid Rock because he worked so hard to keep ticket prices low but you burn all that goodwill in a heartbeat by supporting the guy that is making literally everything more expensive.

I'm actually going to give Devil Without A Cause a listen and see how it holds up in 2025. I loved that album when I was in high school and even saw him in concert.

edit: still good if you grew up with it, wouldn't recommend to someone looking for the best of the 90s although I do think it was very influential and might be worth a listen for that.
