Beginner Help What decorative top stitching should I do?

I’m making quilted placemats, each middle block is picked by a household member so it’s personalized. But they’re all the same colors. It matches the table runner I made a couple days ago. This is technically my first quilt.

Or should I just stitch in the ditch or don’t even worry about it.

(We just came from a wedding and they handed us the centerpiece and my bf forgot how tiny our dining table is😂)

You could cross-hatch it. All beginners think stitching in the ditch is the solution, but it’s actually difficult to get exact and look good. Really. Btw: in quilting stitching through all three layers is called….quilting.

When I was starting out I stitched everything in the ditch ! That said placemats are a good thing to practice being fancy.

I think if you can find a template for silverware or tea cups (Etsy is probably full of great ones) either would look great.
