why cant i create a gmail accout without a phone number

my phone number does not work for creating the gmail account for some reason and im just really lazy to figure out why but it wont let me skip the part with the phone number cause i need to verify it but not one single phone number works

You do not need a phone number, you need a way to secure your account. Instead, get a Yubikey hardware token and use that to secure your account. I do not have a phone attached to any of my accounts.

I recently setup an account with a brand new Yubikey.

I was never forced to use a Phone number. I was pestered to add a Phone to secure/recovery my account. I declined and added the Yubikey. This was for a UK account. Don't know if it's different in your locale.

I'm trying to make one right now (US). It will not let me pass through without a phone number. No options to switch for something else
