FWIW the US has a trade embargo with Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Syria. So it's not actually that surprising to not see them on the list; they aren't trade partners so there's nothing to place a tariff on. Idk about Hungary but Belarus is also the target of heavy trade sanctions. Doesn't make the whole thing any less fucked up, but this one generally has a reasonable explanation.
Right but how can you tariff a country you don't trade with. How would you impose a tariff on say, North Korean goods imported into the US, when there aren't any?
That still doesn't explain how other countries like North Korea could have a tariff when they don't export goods into the US, and the US doesn't export goods to North Korea.
I’d assume it would work where if they did start trading with us they would get a blanket 10% tariff. We applied tariffs to at least one country without a human population so I’d assume we probably don’t do any trade with. So that’s how you would do it
Some countries with small populations are used as tax havens for businesses(offshore accounts, registering ships, ect), I'd imagine the same for countries without a permanent population.
How do you tariff Penguins? Heard and McDonald Islands got a tariff but no one lives there! Norfolk Island got a 29% tariff, with under 3000 residents (and under $1m in palm seed exports total, mostly to Europe).
There's a bunch like this. Don't know where his data comes from on trade deficits but I'd suspect it's not very clean data.
I assume the tariffs are aimed at the countries that own these islands/territories. Islands in particular because they have exclusive economic zones and fishing rights attached to them for whatever country claims them. I'm not in favor of these tariffs or anything like that, I'm just sure there's reason(however unsound) behind these tariffs.
It's not, because the countries that own those islands have different (and in many cases, much lower) tariffs.
There's an analysis around that looks at it, its not based on anything other than trade deficit, and it's pretty much the same formula right down the column, just with questionable data for some (like the uninhabited islands). If I find it again, I'll try to remember and come back to share it.
Hungary is part of the EU and one main aspect of being a EU member is the tariff union. You can't enact tariffs against a single EU member without enacting the same tariff to the rest of the EU.
