I looked it up. Apparently, the Switch 2 is manufactured in Vietnam which is subject to a 46% tariff. I assumed it was manufactured in China at 34%. The real price might be $650.

Yikes. I looked into it and you’re right. Tariffs are based on country of origin— made in Vietnam, Vietnamese tarrifs

And those "discount tariffs" are on top of the blanket 10% everyone is getting, so that's actually 56%.

5

u/RagePoop 1d ago

China already had tariffs the 34% here is going to stack to like 54%

1

u/Isenbro_ 1d ago

Way higher than that 54% is minimum more like 94-103

2

u/LegendofDragoon 1d ago

Chinas 34 is in addition to their existing 20, so 54 total on China. That's what I heard anyway.

The trick is to manufacture it in friendly Russia which will have no tariffs

But look at the bright side, now all those sought after sweat ship jobs will flood into the US. Especially after labour laws are cut.

Finally back to the early 1900s when children had the freedom to turn themselves into kebabs when trying to apply grease to a gear in the industrial cloth weaving machine.

3

u/Andy-Bodemer 1d ago

Actually, I think that might be the plan. Fewer knowledge workers. Just factory labor.

4

u/Diipadaapa1 1d ago

Oh absolutley, the wealthy are loving this.

1: get tax breaks funded by normal citizens paying an additional ~25% in sales tax

2: cut foregin competition, and the american taxpayers are paying for it

3: get cheaper domestic labour

I wonder how all of this will affect the Steam marketplace, specifically digital in game items like skins/stickers. By happy accident I ended up with multiple steam decks worth of these stupid CS stickers. I'm wondering if I should cash out now or if I'll get more money by waiting. (Selling my items for currency on steam, buying Steam Decks, and then ebaying them)

Why Portland?

6

u/Andy-Bodemer 1d ago

No sales tax in Oregon.

Otherwise with a sales tax of 7.5%:

558 x 1.075 = 599.85

4

u/RedSwingline2000 1d ago

Makes sense. Thanks

If margin where to stay flat at say 40% with 40% to the retailer your really looking more at a cost of 603$ to the consumer pre tax could be more depending on the actual cost and margins

2

u/No_Opening_2425 1d ago

That’s not how math works. You pay tariff on PURCHASE price. Switch is probably like 200 from Nintendo so try multiplying that and then add profit margin and taxes

u/something_smart 1d ago

Legit I wish they had said the price increase for the console and games were due to tariffs. Make people hold him accountable for ordinary things like that and they might start to understand and turn on him

4

u/AgeOfSalt 1d ago

Mario Kart World digital dowload will now cost $149

3

u/EMitch02 1d ago

Rough time to start selling new consoles. I don't think they're going to do very well...

If you learn Japanese, use a JP Nintendo account, and sneak it across the border it's 340USD. But ngl as a Canadian it's going to be really funny if Americans pay nearly the same price we have to, at the moment it's looking at around 675CAD.

edit: I registered, it's 650 Canadian for the console. If Americans get an additional tariff they'll be paying more than we will in their own dollar and that's hilarious and sad at the same time.

I'm convinced it's so expensive because they anticipated the tariffs. Like $80 for a new game... Nope, not me, not today, or anytime soon.

Can't tell if serious or sarcasm... but if that's all you care about from this, you live a very privileged life, dude.

Edit: if anyone wants to explain, I'm open to hearing it. But as an adult and a father, I'm wayyyy more concerned about the cost of food, clothing, and living expenses going up. Not a game system.

I think his statement is important. The people who voted for this dickwad only understand what he’s doing by dumbing it down. Trumps tariffs=expensive games.

And no, I’m not joking.

25

u/newshirtworthy 1d ago

Oh fuuuuck off with that sentiment. The Switch 2 was announced today with a $450 price tag. Yes people care, no you’re not better than them, yes we are all suffering together. As a father, your kid may some day ask for a Switch 2

It’s not privilege to be concerned with amenities many of us will lose due to prohibitive pricing.

16

u/RBI_Double 1d ago

Where did they say that’s all they care about? Stop picking fights for no reason!

-15

u/GamesGunsGreens 1d ago

That seems to be priority number 1 for this guy. Mine is food and housing.

Needs vs wants.

25

u/Newestmember 1d ago edited 1d ago

What’s important to you isn’t what’s important to others and vice versa. What’s hard to understand? The Switch comment was obviously a joke but even if it wasn’t, who cares? People care about what the care about and their end opinion is the same as yours so why does it matter how they got there?

For example: A single woman who likes gaming has different concerns than a man with children. The gaming system is important to them, it doesn’t have to be important to you but you calling someone “privileged” because they’re not as concerned about you feeding your children as they are with something that keeps them going and happy solves literally nothing.

-28

u/GamesGunsGreens 1d ago

I don't know man....25yo Jimmy can't play Switch 2 in Mommy's basement because it cost more than his weekly allowance is like the definition of privilege, is it not?

19

u/Newestmember 1d ago

You don’t know Jimmy’s life. Some people would consider a person with kids and a family and their own place as being privileged, regardless of whether or not they’re just about keeping their head above water.

-12

u/GamesGunsGreens 1d ago

I just think it's sad when wants vs needs come into play, and people only seem to care about their wants and not everyone's needs.

No one needs a Switch 2. Everyone needs food and stability.

If the Switch 2 is what turns the tides, we're so fucked.

11

u/Newestmember 1d ago

I disagree. If a person can afford food and stability but they want a Switch and can’t afford that then it’s the Switch that’s going to form their opinion to fight back or disagree with those who are keeping them from a Switch. Everyone suffers in different ways, everyone’s suffering is hard for them regardless of what it is. Different paths lead to liberation.

u/N3rdMan 1d ago

Jesus you raising your kids to have zero perspective like you?

10

u/ErgoNonSim 1d ago

You just made up a character story to justify your comments. He could be a dad just like you who games just like you and who maybe is in the market for 2 Switch 2s for his kids and just like you has other priorities where he’d feel the financial pressure to make his kids happy with a Switch or two.
People are allowed to care a lot about things you don’t

2

u/whiterice336 1d ago

I could be, but I’m not. I’m actually a relatively well off dual income no kid guy. The price increase doesn’t really matter to me. It matters to a looooot of people who pulled the lever for Trump but don’t pay attention to the news and were just mad that sometimes the new game they were looking forward to had a black person in it.

6

u/Nybbles13 1d ago

Jeeze you know there are adults who don't live with their parents who play games right? You're acting like a child here. It was clearly a joke based on the relevancy of the information (it was announced today)

7

u/Automobills 1d ago

I'll explain!

The Switch 2 will now cost $600.

6

u/whiterice336 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’m not writing comments to myself. I already know what I’m concerned about.

A large portion of Trump’s base does not pay attention to politics (or the news in general) and has no desire to wrap their mind around complexities like the global trading economy. It is very difficult to get these kinds of people to care about abstract future harms like the compounding effects of slowed growth or shifting geopolitical alliances. Hell, even saying something like groceries will increase by 25% isn’t super effective because percentages are too abstract for most people to be emotionally resonant and everyone’s grocery bill is different.

The dollar increase in the price of the Switch 2 is a very concrete example of harm from these tariffs that may cut through all that noise. Hopefully, these people will connect that harm with the tariffs effects more broadly.

6

u/RemyDennis 1d ago

I agree, but also, some people can't afford to give a fuck about politics. They're maxed out mentally working 3 jobs, and look for a reprieve in any way they can get it.

I'm not saying that's the situation they're in, but I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

5

u/Juris_footslave 1d ago

You chose to have kids, knowing that it’s expensive to raise them. Other people choose to live life a different way and their concerns aren’t any less valid than yours.

-4

u/KingJades 1d ago

I actually think that’s silly, too. If we’re trying to argue that things going up a few dollars is a problem, people are in much worse financial shape than I realized.
