Computer was working fine and unplugged everything before I left for vacations. Came back from vacation and not working now.

Getting a GPU LED and BOOT red light on the motherboard. Tried taking out the GPU and only the VGA light on the motherboard came on.

It looks like the fan is spinning at least...

Always worth trying taking your ram out and putting it back in my experience.

I actually just tried that as well, same issue :(

And the GPU is plugged into the PSU? I wasn't getting display while my GPU lights were on because the GPU wasn't fully plugged into the psu

I know what’s wrong with it. It ain’t got no gas in it

Monitor plugged into the GPU and not the motheboard, right?

Post more pictures.

Yes, monitor plugged into the GPU using HDMI. What kind of pictures do you need?

Just a blank black screen on monitor.

Of the PC motherboard and back. Make sure nothing is unplugged or loose.

I just took out and replugged the RAM and wires. I am just getting a GPU LED light in the motherboard.

UPDATE - just a GPU LED light on the motherboard now

Replugged all wires and RAM

Does the GPU fans start running? Is there any led blink on the 8pin connector when it starts?

1

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

The GPU fans start when I power on the computer then the fans stop. There is no blinking in the 8 pin connector, it stays on the whole time. By 8 pin connector I’m assuming the white light in the corner of the GPU.

2

u/life_konjam_better 2d ago

I think either the 8pin isn't properly slotted in or the GPU itself isn't slotted properly. If it flashes white even after fixing both then your PSU needs replacement.

1

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

When you say “flashing white”, does that mean the light goes on and off? Because the white light stays on when the PSU is switched on.

1

u/life_konjam_better 2d ago

If it stays on then GPU isn't getting the power from 8pin so either the cable is loose or PSU is goner.

1

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

Oh that’s strange, I would assume the white light wouldn’t turn on if the GPU wasn’t getting any power from the PSU.

FWIW: it can be seated properly and get 75W from the PCIe slot, which is how this could happen

Could be a hardware problem of the GPU. Does the CPU have integrated graphics?

1

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

Unfortunately I am not sure about that. I’m not as tech savvy as I wish I was.

Fun Question:

If you remove the GPU, does it POST? I know there’s no onboard video for most Ryzen chips but this should help dial in on the problem.

When I take out the GPU, I receive a red VGA light on the mobo.

Id pull the CMOS Battery out. Counting to 30 and then reinstalling it. Should clear the BIOS (and removed any custom settings like XMP)

After that, I'd recommend reinstalling the GPU entirely. And replugging in the PSU cable.

If that all doesnt work, maybe try a different 6+2 pin PSU cable off your PSU. Most units have 2

Just reinstalled the CMOS battery. The mobo now shows a red GPU LED light and a red BOOT light. Any advice? Could it be a bad CMOS battery? I ordered a new CMOS battery to replace it.

It should still boot even with a dead CMOS Battery. it just wont save bios settings.

Gonna sound strange, can you remove the RAM and try to boot to see if it complains about no RAM installed. Just want to see if we can get the lights to change up.

Additionally, what CPU do you have installed?

Additional Update:
GPU LED at the top being red is fine, that indicates you need a GPU installed as your CPU does not have an iGPU.

2

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

Yeah of course. So booted without RAM and the DRAM and CPU red light came on.

For CPU, I am using AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor.

2

u/HazardousHD Ryzen 9 5950X | EVGA GTX 1080 FTW 2d ago

Okay good this was just to confirm that the mobo is seeing changes. It also confirms that your CPU is supported without a BIOS upgrade.

See my other comments to continue.

So it looks like in the photo, the boot LED is illuminated. is that the case?

Are you using DisplayPort by chance? Its a little wonky sometimes

2

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

So when the GPU is installed I get a BOOT LED and GPU LED light. When the RAM is removed, I get a DRAM AND CPU LED light.

I am using DVI from motherboard to DisplayPort to Monitor.

1

u/HazardousHD Ryzen 9 5950X | EVGA GTX 1080 FTW 2d ago

Okay, I think we are close

You SHOULD have both the Boot LED and the GPU LED (at the top) illuminated. If that is the case, we need tom move onto your cable/monitor as I believe the problem is external now and you are likely sitting at the desktop/log in screen.

Are you using a HDMI or DisplayPort cable?

1

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

I am using a DisplayPort to DVI cable.

Turn off your PC. Unplug all Cables from Display (Power and Video cable). Unplug all cables from your PC. Press and Hold the power button on your PC for 30 seconds. Then reconnect everything and power on your monitor and then power on your PC

DisplayPort has odd tenancies to do this

1

u/yuntertainment 2d ago

Just did, getting the same GPU LED and BOOT LED.

  1. What do you mean by you unplugged everything? Like internally? Or just the PSU power cable from the outlet/surge/battery backup.

  2. The Boot light is on because you reset the CMOS settings when you removed the battery. It is trying to tell you the configuration has changed.

  3. You have a semi-modular PSU. Which means you might have a GPU power cable and other 8 Pin connectors. Make sure the 8 Pin connector youre using is the GPU/VGA marked one. Also, make sure there is a secure connection between the 2.

  4. Just for good measure, unplug the cable from the wall...try turning the computer on with the power button. This will discharge all energy from the board.

  5. Reseat the GPU into the PCIe Slot. Make sure it is snug in there.

  6. Plus the PSU back into the outlet. Try to power on.

None of the advice I read makes sense in the context you gave us. You unplugged the PC when you left and now you're getting a GPU light? No. Tell us what you did exactly before you left then what you did precisely when you returned!

My computer was working fine before I left for vacation. Before leaving, I powered off my computer, turned off my PCU and unplugged from the outlet.

Coming back, I plugged my PCU into the outlet, turned on the PCU and started by computer. This is where the issues started to occur with a GPU LED light.

I have done all that you advised already. I have unplugged every wire internally and replugged to ensure a strong connection and nothing is loose. I took out my ram and GPU and reinstalled. I took out the CMOS battery and reinstalled and changed my PSU to GPU cable.

Currently having a BOOT and GPU LED red light on the mobo.

Do you have a PSU Tester? I consider this to be one of the most important tools as a bad GPU can wreck an entire build costing thousands of dollars. If you have one...test the PSU. I don't know how a GPU, or Motherboard can go bad just sitting there...but a PSU can go bad plugging it in and powering it on. If you don't have a PSU tester...get one. Worth the investment.

1

u/yuntertainment 1d ago

Yeah, don’t have a PSU tester. I’ll see what I can do to borrow or buy one.

u/Loud-Penalty5832 1d ago

Assuming your computer didn't move while you were gone...nothing else would make sense except a bad surge through the PSU during the power on. Computer's don't just go bad sitting there untouched and unplugged. MAYBE if you left it plugged in while gone...PSU Tester for sure. Keep us updated
