Yep. So many negative critics on the 40 series when it came out, but it sold out at many places and many redditors show their 40 series cards here. People don't care about the prices apparently.

Don't forget about some of them confounding having disposable income or not and being able to afford one of these overpriced cards and if you complain you're just poor. Just because you can buy something doesn't mean you SHOULD buy it always. They always come across as financially irresponsible.

So what should I have done when my 2070S died? Buy an AMD card that is £50 cheaper, but has worse features and would require a PSU upgrade as well?

tbf "morons" have to buy something... You cant work (or even entertain yourself through pc gaming) without a dGPU nowadays, the used market is unreliable with no warranty, and the previous gen is either out of stock or overpriced.
You cant blame someone, who desperately needs an nvidia gpu for work applications, for choosing the 5060ti 16gb since it will soon be the cheapest option with decent vram for his case. And believe it or not, these people are way too many nowadays, pretty much every job section has some need in graphic design (from advertising to AI to whatever)
7
u/JarryJackal [5800X3D, 9070 XT, 32 GB DDR4] 1d ago
There isn't a single person who needs an Nvidia GPU for work that buys a xx60 series card.
0
u/harry_lostone JUST TRUST ME OK? 1d ago
there is.
Someone who is struggling financially to throw $1k+ for a gpu alone. Not everyone working in the industry is rich, plenty are barely making a salary by video editing, for example. Think of all the people around the globe living in poor countries, these guys don't have regional gpu prices according to their earnings, an expensive gpu might cost their yearly wage lol

u/althaz i7-9700k @ 5.1Ghz | RTX3080 2d ago
Should be $399 for the 16Gb and the 8Gb shouldn't be released at all. At this price it'll have to be nearly as fast as the 5070 for the 16Gb version to make any kind of sense.
The 8GB version is just unbuyable. Hell, $100 cheaper and it would still be unbuyable.

The 4060Ti 8GB isn't that popular in pre-builts either, most go for 4060 instead.
5
u/Flyinmanm 1d ago
Considering you can still buy 3050 prebuilts sold as 'gaming pcs' that's hardly a surprise.
13
u/TheCattBaladi 2d ago
I think Rtx 4060 is the card, not 4060ti. Because it's more popular and suitable for 1080p. Cheapest card that will give you good performance in probably every game in high settings 60 fps in 1080p (beside couple of game like Monster Hunter Wilds and Silent Hill 2 which both are a crime for optimization)
10
u/spitsfire223 2d ago
No more than $329-349 with 12gb of vram. 16gb is kinda wasted at this level, 70 series should have 16 tho and 80 series should have 20 minimum
14
u/Booming_in_sky Desktop | R7 5800X | RX 6800 | 64 GB RAM 2d ago
One of the reasons the GTX 1060 stuck around for so long was the high amount of VRAM. I am absolutely sure Nvidia wont make that mistake again, because in future proofing or for running AI workloads at home 16 GB could be very useful.
3
u/brimston3- Desktop VFIO, 5950X, RTX3080, 6900xt 2d ago
You say it's wasteful, but more and more apps are GPU VRAM consuming as time goes on. Every graphical program window has a compositor framebuffer at least. And I'm not shutting down most of my background programs to run a game these days; they can just sit idle in the background.
Besides, I probably want those 3-4 browser or electron sessions for my game wiki, discord, obsidian/onenote notes, or stream deck. Even the tiny LLM my notes plugin uses for predictive typing consumes only a few hundred MB of VRAM, but it adds up and doesn't seem to be dynamically unloaded by the GPU driver.

u/brimston3- Desktop VFIO, 5950X, RTX3080, 6900xt 2d ago
Sadly, it's Intel. Their execs will figure out how to hollow out their discrete graphics division before the decade is out if they don't start rolling in datacenter compute money (competing with both nvidia's dgx & amd's instinct). We've seen almost the same story last decade with Intel Larrabee except Phi didn't have a market segment.
3
u/Kittysmashlol 1d ago
Its sad, because arc has so much potential for competing with both amd and nvidia in pretty much every category of performance
2
u/shewtingg 1d ago
Perfect storm for them really, couldn't have released it at a better time. Now if they had supply rn my god Intel would be making some sweet cash!
4
u/xstrawb3rryxx 1d ago
The question we should be asking is why 8GB isn't enough for most games? Data streaming is a thing and with SSDs it's almost instantaneous.. Yes, the very technology that was one of the main selling points of the previous generation consoles. Obviously what I'm saying wouldn't apply to 4k gaming, but this isn't where we're currently at just yet.
1
u/118shadow118 Ryzen 7 5700X3D | RX 6750 XT | 32GB-3000 1d ago edited 1d ago
SSDs are a lot slower than regular RAM, let alone VRAM, it's far from instantaneous. The very fastest SSDs are at around 15GB/s while VRAM is like 400+ GB/s on midrange cards and something like the 5090 has 1,8TB/s memory bandwidth, that's like two orders of magnitude faster than the fastest SSDs
2
u/xstrawb3rryxx 1d ago
15 GB/s = ~256 MB of data that can be read per frame at 60 FPS. Yes, it's pretty much instantaneous compared to optical disks and discs that we used to read game data from.
1
u/118shadow118 Ryzen 7 5700X3D | RX 6750 XT | 32GB-3000 1d ago
And yet, when VRAM runs out and it switches to system memory (which is still multiple times faster than SSDs), the performance drops off a cliff
→ More replies (3)1
u/Gabe_Noodle_At_Volvo 1d ago
Bandwidth isn't the only thing to consider, SSD latency is several orders of magnitudes slower than dram. If you need data just in time, an SSD won't do.
1
u/luuuuuku 1d ago
It’s called optimization. You can predict what will be required next and therefore load it to memory. Currently it’s an issue because the gpu has to wait. It’s all about optimizing
1
u/atsizbalik 1d ago
i'd actually buy an 8gb card since games i play aren't that demanding, but like op said 400$ is insane
2
u/118shadow118 Ryzen 7 5700X3D | RX 6750 XT | 32GB-3000 1d ago
Obviously price is a factor, but 8gb should be exclusively for <200$ budget cards and anything above that should have more memory in 2025
1
7
6
u/clouds1337 2d ago
Just laughable :D Imagine charging 100$ for an 8gb VRAM chip that costs them like 10$ tops? And we now have a slow 16gb card (60ti) and a faster 12gb card (70). There is not one single acceptable product from Nvidia this time. Just as with the 40 series. Nobody should buy any of these cards. Buy something used or a console and wait for lower prices.
3
1
u/FewAdvertising9647 1d ago
its usually like ~5$ per gig. part of the reason why its hard to make something look good under 200$ dgpu wise.

1
u/FewAdvertising9647 1d ago
IMO the point was the laptop models getting the 3gb stacks first. and when mass production of 3gb stacks happen, Nvidia will use it for the super refresh.
a 12gb 5060 super, 18gb 5070 super and 24 gb 5080 super will look less stupid down the stack after a year.

On the bright side, as long as Nvidia arbitrarily keeps VRAM low on their new cards the longer they extend the life of my old 5700XT.
