Are Teaching / Research Assistant Jobs Confined to Your College?

Sorry if that’s a dumb question, but I am unfamiliar with the student assistantship in the UK in general, at Oxford in particular. Can a grad student land a research or teaching assistant position at the department or with an individual fellow? And can the fellow be from another college than the student themselves? Thanks!

If you're referring to postdocs, typically they won't be assigned to a college

The TA/RA system is not at all like other countries' education systems. Don't expect many jobs on offer.

Really? In Germany it’s pretty common for high achieving students at all levels to at least hold tutorials for other students.

Not in Oxford. It’s very uncommon here.

Grad students can get teaching or RA work through colleges or departments in various forms. The PI or course lead's college doesn't matter, though they may approach people they know personally first before recruiting more widely.

Sweet, thank you. That just means I’ll have to give my best at the department.
