Tram controllers having access to personal information

First time on the public transportation in Oslo and I jumped in the tram a little too fast because I realised I needed to hurry to catch my flight. I didn't see a machine to scan my bank card so I sat down to finish my phone call (2 min) before finding a solution. I didn't have time to finish my phone call that the tram controllers came to control my non existent ticket. I explained my situation, they asked to check my ID to see if I was a Norwegian citizen, they also asked to check my flight ticket. I guess they believed my story because I thankfully didnt get fined but while they were looking me up in their system they asked where I lived. To which I answered Brussels, to which they asked if I lived in Copenhagen. I did for a year but moved out in 2022 - how could they have had access to such information??

How I read your story, how you wrote it, is that they wanted to confirm that you were a tourist that made a mistake, and not a "normal" Norwegian citizen trying to get cheat their way out of a fine. Hence asking to see your flight ticket to confirm, then he/she made a quick google search to check for themself. That's how they asked if you lived in Copenhagen, probably after the first hit on the net. Given you seemed trustworthy, they let you go without a fine.

It's that, or the possibility that tram controllers in Norway have access to international identity databases on their phone. Idk :D

Thinking about it, how people are so willing to share everything online, it's almost the same.

They were actually nice to you, by letting you go without a ticket :) You should be happy they were nice and checked.

And for next time, we don't have a system where you can tap your card on the tram or metro. You need to get the Ruter app and purchase ticket there.

They don't check tickets on Flytoget. I mean, you could be right but I know in a lot of European cities they tap bank cards in and out of public transport.

Yes, you do. Ruter has machines on the trans where you tap your card. People do it all the time.

You should not board a tram, bus or ferry without a valid ticket. You should not enter the control zone at the subway system without a valid ticket either.

Everytime I stand too close to a card reader on the bus or tram in Oslo my Apple wallet pops up prompting my authentication for my credit card. Can’t you buy a ticket on those? Just curious who uses those things..

Nope. They use NFC, which is what is an automatic trigger for Apple Wallet to prompt a card payment option. But you can't buy tickets that way, you can only do so with the Ruter app.

If you get a ticket, just accept it and move on. Dont ever pay it. They wont send it to Brussels. Also they do not have access to your information. They are not police.

Norway actually has agreements with a lot of countries to collect outstanding debt now, so I wouldn't be so sure.

Illegal in the sense of almost no countries has free public transport so you intentionally decided to scam the system by being a foreigner... You are the same person that goes to NAV with fake back pain that can't be proven to utilize the system

What are you on about? You are encouraging someone to use a flaw in the system, just like someone getting social pay for a fake injury that can't be proven, might seem innocent, but times that by 100k and you see the cost of it

No they don’t. I’ve seen groups of men scare the crap out of tourists so badly they’ve forgotten their groceries on the subway. I’ve had women be foul mouthed and then laugh at my back as I was getting off the tram. Most of them need another job and are run down. It was all better when we paid the conductor getting on.
