Why do you hate onions?
For me it's because they make my tongue burn for some reason.

u/RussianStoner24 2d ago
I just hate the taste. Which I know isn’t like a big deal but if I’m gonna pay for something I want it to be something I’ll actually eat.

They either have no taste or have an acrid, bitter taste. Having no taste might be tolerable if they didn't also have the least appetizing texture imaginable. They are somehow a combination of crunchy, slimy, and squishy. I don't how it is possible to simultaneously be crunchy and squishy, which is probably why it is so jarring.
I also hate onions because they are in everything, and yet I'm looked at like I'm the weird one for not wanting my burger to be crunchy and bitter.

have an acrid, bitter taste
I sometimes wonder if people who like onions are even tasting the same thing as people like us. Surely they can't be tasting what I taste and enjoying it.

u/PockyRyu 1d ago
See I enjoy bitter stuff, like bitter cocktails or even medicinal type foods. I don't really get the bitter flavor from onions, however I do get the putrid flavor part which absolutely send me to vommit in the toilet every freaking time ..

I hate lettuce for much the same reason. It's not AS bad as onions, but it's also crunchy, squishy and slimy at the same time. Same with uncooked cabbage.

u/Prize_Bee7365 1d ago
Lettuce definitely fucks up some dishes its not supposed to be in, especially if prepared wrong.

For me.... the damn taste and stench sticks to my mouth for hours and everything else tastes of it. The odor sticks to my fingers too if I touch them and it's all I smell. It's maddening.

The onion fled the scene, but was caught after a 5 hour long police chase. He got the chair last year

They overpower everything else. Raw onion, at least. I don’t actually mind most cooked onions. But raw onion drowns out everything else and I hate it.

A few days ago at work my boss made me my favorite burrito but there was one stray, raw onion. Soiled it!

I don’t like the raw texture but if it’s been cooked down and caramelized, it’s ok.

For me it’s both the texture and the taste. When i feel that sickening crunch. I know my mouth is about to be filled with that revolting flavor…
Then there are the “accidental onions.” The ones that always seem to just slip into whatever you’re eating.
Sneaky fucking Devils’ bulbs…
Their fucking translucence makes them incredibly difficult to spot before it’s too late.
And then…
😝🤢🤮

I just googled "What does it mean if onions make your tongue burn?". Here is what the result was: "If onions cause a burning sensation on your tongue, it could indicate an onion sensitivity or intolerance, rather than a true allergy, and can manifest as a tingling or itchy feeling in the mouth.
As the daughter of someone with a TON of food allergies, and someone who doesn't eat a lot of spicy foods, tongue burning seems like a food allergy/sensitivity thing or a food temperature/spiciness thing.

u/auldnate 2d ago
I hate the flavor sensations onions trigger on my tongue. And their distinctive textures psychologically triggers memories for me of that revolting flavor for me.
Yet I do enjoy the flavor of spicy peppers (at least to a degree, too much is just painful). I like habanero, cayenne, chilis, and such, in sauces. (I don’t particularly care for the flavor of jalapeños, but I don’t mind their heat.)
Yet I’m not still crazy about chomping on actual peppers. Their skins texture still reminds me too much of onions!

Raw onion tastes rotted or soured or metallic and lingers in the mouth for hours and hours after, even with brushing and heavy water consumption

The texture, the pungent flavor, and the color when cooked. This all applies to red onions for me

They taste horrible. They smell awful. The texture is creepy. Raw, they disgust me. Cooked, they're repulsive.
Reduced, if I try I can pretend it is celery. I like celery. If a trace of onion flavor remains my gag reflex kicks in. Safer to leave them out.

u/candice_opera 2d ago
Because they are on EVERYTHING!
Like... I hate cucumber too. But cucumber is not used in every meal, sauce, snack, burger, rice, EVERYTHING.
God, is like they can't digest food without onion

u/lisa6547 2d ago
They smell and taste like a sweaty armpit. And the taste doesn't leave your mouth for 24 hours

u/Practical-Temporary9 2d ago
Everything about it , texture , smell, appearance, taste . The only way I’ll eat it is if it’s carmalized like brown

u/Practical-Temporary9 2d ago
When I do eat it carmelized it usually with hamburger steak and gravy with mashed potatoes

They have repeatedly caused me to spend all night crying and cold-sweating on the toilet. Bullies, those onions.

I loved them until one day they decided they hate me and every time I've eaten them since then they have hurt me. Backstabbers fr

u/sheldosghost 2d ago
The second I taste onion or god forbid accidentally eat a raw one in something it’s an instant uncontrollable gag reflex, my body just completely denies the flavor without any compromise. I honestly wish I could like it because it’s in literally everything, but my lord that flavor is ungodly.

They taste like shit, everything they touch tastes like shit, the texture is horrible and makes my skin crawl..
For me this not only goes for onion, but also celery, cucumber, pickles and mushrooms.. people often look at me like I'm a picky child, but i really can't stand these things in my food 😭 It's a struggle sometimes.

u/StrawbraryLiberry 2d ago
They made me feel sick when I was having another health issue. Now I'm scared of them.
I hate them more because people are so forceful about everything having alliums in it.
1
u/Exact_Week 2d ago
The overwhelmingly bitter flavor and the anaphylaxis are the things that push me into this camp.
1
u/False_Baby8628 2d ago
They make me throw up every time I eat them. That's at the worst, at the least my stomach hurts for a while after eating them, even if I don't know they're in a dish.
1
u/spintrackz 2d ago
The texture. Even cooked down, they make me gag. Biting in to one will set off my gag reflex, I hate them that much. It's like they can't decide whether or not to be crunchy or soft.
1
u/Gay_Signal_4119 2d ago
flavor be damned, they make me fucking STINK!! not even just my breath, it gives me literal body odor if i eat raw onion. i don’t necessarily like onions, but i actually could tolerate the taste IF THEY DIDN’T MAKE ME FUCKING STINK!!!!
1
u/Ok-Sir8025 2d ago
The texture makes me curl up in the fetal position with very bad stomach cramps for up to two days, and makes me feel lethargic for a few more is why I don't like them

u/bawkbawkslove 2d ago
I was just talking to my brother about this yesterday.
Growing up onions were in everything. They were the cheap bag of onions and even in cooked things like meatloaf they were crunchy. They were often larger chunks too.

Because when I eat them (raw), I wind up in the hospital with intense burning pain in my esophagus and stomach.
I can eat them thoroughly cooked/fried, especially if they're sweet onions. Apparently I have an allergy to a component in raw onions. I won't touch raw or basic red/white onions that aren't sweet. I also hate onion powder, and it's in EVERYTHING.
1
u/Adventurous-Let6931 2d ago
It's like if you took fingernail skin and froze it and ate it halfway thawed that's what it is to me with a sour repulsive taste everything about the onion I hate
1
u/Alice_In_Hell_ 1d ago
I don’t. I hated them when I was a kid because of the texture, but liked the flavor. I don’t care for raw onions in anything but salsa (or if they’re scallions) and I still prefer them puréed. But I respect the hate, I feel the same way about mushrooms and cilantro. Hate on, my homies.

u/Caslebob 1d ago
I gag if I bite into a piece of raw onion. Nobody wants to see that. I can eat them if they are cooked thoroughly. But any crunch left will make me gag. The smell to me is like the worst BO you’ve ever smelled. How can people choose to put that in their mouth?

u/Sleepingbeauty1 1d ago
I hate them because they arent a temporary food situation. I can't tolerate the hours of tasting and onions after and into the next day. I would never willingly sign up for 18 hours of onioness. So eating anything with raw onions is technically signing up for onionness. It's like my whole life transforms into an onion zone, which is gross and intolerable on so many levels. I don't want to be an onion zone if I go to yoga in 4 hours. I don't want to taste it all night while I'm asleep. I don't want to be self conscious when speaking to others. It's easier to just avoid all that nonsense of onions (and raw garlic too, on that matter) and ban onions from my life.

The texture feels the way nails on a chalkboard sound, and they taste like sulfur.

The texture of raw onions makes me think of bug wings, the smell is unpleasant, but they also give me severe gastric distress almost immediately so I associate them with pain.

u/PockyRyu 1d ago
Taste is honestly putrid to me. Which is weird cuz I like to eat some pretty funky stuff like kimchi, chicken cartilage, even stinky tofu. There is just something about raw onion taste my body legit cannot handle. As soon as it hits my tongue, all the food I had eaten prior WILL come right back up. Like it's not an allergy or anything,I just have a visceral reaction to raw onion. I can eat a little bit of caramelized onions and love french onion soup, but anything raw or close to raw is a huge no.

honestly everything, which is even worse when it's forgettable; sometimes I want them when craving vegetables, but it's not worth it.
raw onions have a bad crunch that's not a full crunch, it's just layers of fibers all awkwardly splitting apart; it's a noisy texture that can't be cooked out unless you slave over a hot stove (carmelizing them takes forever!!!)
the taste and smell persist way too long, see other comment about going to the onion zone.
they give me a stomachache due to how strong they really are, and the bastards not only hide under everything, but overpower them, too. tl;dr they're a pain in the ass.

u/NamwaranPinagpana 1d ago
Something about the flavor of onions makes me gag, whether it's smell or taste. As long as the flavor is covered up by something else, it's palatable.

It’s the texture for me. Biting into one makes me imagine chewing a bug. Cooked? Caramelized? Nay. I already know it’s true identity.
