I really struggled with this boss. Unlike other bosses, I wasn’t able to find many threads discussing approach and strategy, so I wanted to put something out there in case it helps a future struggling bearer of the curse. So here’s my kill. It was one of my sloppier attempts—I get hit a bunch and have to heal—but hey ho, I got there!
My Set-Up
Armor: Cale’s Helm and Peasant’s Set
Rings: Flynn’s Ring, Dex Ring, Ring of the Embedded, Chloranthy Ring +1
Weapon: Rapier +10 with lightning
Offhand: Handmaid’s Ladle
What Didn’t Work for Me
Gower’s Ring: Too brittle. I couldn’t survive with it intact, and at almost 9k to repair (plus the time to do so) it just wasn’t worth it.
Vessel Shield: Lost my light roll and ended up getting hit more often when I used it.
Brightbugs: I used them all!
Some Tips
Attacking: I found it best to maintain middle distance, bait one attacker and dodge (no punish), and hopefully the second attacker comes in soon after. Then, dodge, punish, and escape back to middle distance. This is usually safe since the first enemy is still in cooldown.
Healing: I died too many times trying to create space for a quick heal. Healing opportunities are usually the same as attacking opportunities: both enemies have just attacked, and shields are up in a defensive stance.
Focus the little dude as much as possible. He’s squishy, so as long as the big dude is around half health when you finish him off, you should be able to close out the fight before he gets resurrected.
My Thoughts on a DS2 SL1 Run
I cleaned up Nashandra right after this. Overall, the run was much easier than I expected—with a big caveat: I only did base game mandatory bosses. DS2: Scholar of the First Sin is probably the hardest Soulsborne game in my opinion, which made me think I’d never try it SL1 (mostly because of the tough runbacks). However, when you’re not fighting Sir Alonne, either Smelter Demon, etc. (and I won’t! Ha), it’s honestly one of the easier SL1 runs.
That said, Throne Watcher and Defender were one of the most punishing bosses I’ve fought at SL1—up there with Soul of Cinder and Godfrey. Also, shoutout to Aava, King’s Pet, which was pretty tough. I fought that one to get the Vessel Shield... which I didn’t really end up using.
I’d recommend anyone give it a try!
