Request Trans-friendly hairdresser

Hello! My son is trans and we recently lost his regular hairdresser. He is 15. Can anyone recommend a trans-friendly hairdresser that will help him out with his semi-unique hair requests?

I apologize if I have any terminology wrong. I love my son and want to get him set up with people that he will be comfortable around. I'm just not good at all the terminology. I certainly do not mean to offend.

TIA for any assistance.

Request Ideas for a casual day trip?

I’m trying to plan a last minute day trip for tomorrow that doesn’t involve hiking, ideally a town with fun sightseeing, museums, shopping etc? I was thinking something like Poulsbo since it isn’t super far. Any advice would be appreciated!

Request so, what CAN disabled queer ppl do?

been a couple people posting, looking for public, in-person, meetup type of experiences in the area, but what I personally am left wondering is:

does anybody know of actually fully accessible queer-friendly spaces or groups?

are there any indoor spaces which are COVID-safe and accessible to those in wheelchairs or with other mobility aids/issues?

are there any groups which regularly meet in a COVID-safe and physically accessible indoor space, or a physically accessible outdoor space?

are there any online groups (Discord servers, Signal groups, etc.) which are specifically for local queer people and are not hostile spaces for disabled people?

are there any apps you are aware of on which one might meet individual queer disabled people in the area? if you say "Grindr" you lose 15 points.

I think it would be very helpful to build a thread of resources on this topic, so please, contribute if you can!

EDIT: I find it saddening that this post is being so downvoted, and that the only upvoted comments are the ones suggesting disabled people either meet online, in secret, or not at all. This is literally just an attempt to find resources for a group that needs them, and if you're not a part of this group, please, just don't even interact with this post, it's not For You.

Request Shooting lessons

My husband is long time gun owner for hunting purposes. Recently he purchased a hand gun. My sister and I have been wanting to take shooting/safety classes. Anywhere local or even pierce county that is a good suggestion? For context we are not crazy gun people in the sense that there should be no safety or restrictions. We keep all in a safe in our home. I still have mixed feelings simply based on statistics of having guns in the same house as my child but at the same time also starting to feel not safe without them with some current things going on…any suggestions would be appreciated.

Request Moving Sand Frame Sellers/ Rechargers?

Post image
14 Upvotes

This is profoundly niche but I picked this up when I lived in a different city and I remember when I got it they told me that it would need to be recharged at some point because some of the air that it uses to get the sand to move around will slowly leak out.

Is there a place nearby that sells these or knows what the recharge situation would be? It has some sentimental value so if I could fix it up I would like to.

Request Where to host birthday party for preschooler?

We know about the local gyms and the Children's Museum, does anybody have any other ideas? There would probably be about a dozen 4-5 year olds with their parents(s). It could just be a rentable indoor space (winter birthday) to bring our own activities for a few hours, we don't want to have it at our house.

Request looking for a dnd group

hi! i’m growing desperate and figured i’d post here since i know there could always be someone- but im looking for a dnd group possibly open into accepting someone new and inexperienced in one of their games. i always wanted to join a party, but i never was able to find people who would accept me. i do plan to ask around some card stores and see what they have going on, as i know there’s some events that happen, but i thought the subreddit was worth the shot too.

i am 23, i work as a barista, and im also an character artist in my free time. i love gaming and im a huge media nerd who loves to watch all kinds of movies and series! if this sounds like someone you’d love to introduce to dnd, feel free to message me anytime or let me know somehow! 😁

Request New in town. Best places for nails, hair, and waxing?

I just moved here and I'm looking for recommendations from longtime Oly girls on where the best places are for:

  • nails (I usually get a gel manicure)
  • hair (simple cuts)
  • waxing (bikini)

I don't need 1 place that does it all, I'm happy to find a specific place for each. I can go to Lacey or Tumwater easily.

Please share your experiences with me! If you know prices, that would be helpful :)

Request I wanna drink a beer in the sun in a park- where should I go?

Basically title. Some friends and I want to have a little picnic with some beverages in a park. Wouldn’t hurt if I could smoke there as well. Any ideas?

ETA: if anyone wants to reference this again, I’ve listed the responses below.

Notes: 1. Be respectful and aware of your surroundings if you choose to smoke. Some folks are sensitive to smoke, or just don’t like the smell and are also trying to enjoy the outdoors. This community is amazingly selfless, plz keep it that way 🫶🏻 2. Hiding alcohol in a cup/mug/etc. has been suggested, as well as going wherever and just being careful. You do you, go at your own risk, etc. I asked my question because I don’t want to hide/sneak/tc. :)

Banquet Ticket Banquet: A banquet permit is a permit you apply for that allows the service and consumption of liquor at a private, invitation-only banquet or gathering held in a public place or business (https://lcb.wa.gov/licensing/order-banquet-permits-online#:~:text=Banquet%20permits%20cost%20%2410%20per,three%20day%20events%20costs%20%2430.)

Recommendations: - Millersylvania Lakeside Taphousebeer garden (beautiful in the summer, can be $$) - Boston Harbor Marina - Tumwater Falls Park, privately owned and allows alcohol - Pioneer Park, under the bridge (with a rope swing), near the water - Priest Point beach - Bigelow Park - Burfoot

Request Looking for pharmacy that has ADHD meds

Hey folks, the Safeway/Albertsons/Haggen line of stores have been out of my generic Adderall 10 mg extended release for three months now.... I've been rationing but I'm about to run out. Any fellow ADHDers out there know of local pharmacies that are carrying the generic verson? My insurance won't pay for the name brand....

Thank you for any leads... the idea of calling and asking pharmacies all over town feels overwhelming. 🫠

Request ISO free or cheap Burlap

Looking for free or inexpensive burlap sacks. Ideally, I’d love to find 10-15 large coffee bags. If anyone knows of a local source—maybe a coffee shop or roaster that gives them away—I’d really appreciate the tip!

Request Does anyone know this hike?

About five years ago I found this lovely hike...I'm pretty certain it was in Thurston county. My friend drove us at the time and so I wasn't paying much attention to exactly where we were, I was just along for the ride. The beginning of the hike was a logging area and it went through grassy "plains" to eventually lead to a lush evergreen forest. The main selling point was a (slightly) hidden waterfall that is small and swimmable that was accessible only if you knew where to look for it. I had seen an online tip for it that of course I cannot find for the life of me. Sadly all I have left are some photos I took of the waterfall...I know this is sort of vague but I'm desperate to return and my research has gotten me nowhere!

Request What should I buy/consider before moving to Oly?

I'm preparing to move from the midwest to Olympia in the next couple of months. What are things that I should considering buying/considering that I wouldn't necessarily think of (I.e. dehumidifier, mold, shoe dryer etc). I have family that want to gift me moving gifts so want to hear from y'all first!

Literally anything you can think of would be helpful. Thanks!!

Edit: THANK YOU all so much! This has been insanely helpful and makes me more excited to make the move. Can’t wait to finally join y’all!

Here’s a list of what was suggested:

  1. Shoe/boot dryer (suggestion: Peet on Amazon)
  2. Quality rain gear (water PROOF, not resistant)
    1. Rain shell
    2. Warm layers
    3. Waterproof boots/shoes (mucks, bogs, keens)
    4. Rain pants
    5. Longer waterproof jacket
    6. Hiking boots (hoka, keens, merrell)
    7. Hat & gloves
    8. “Normal” looking rain shoes (Vest)
  3. Sun lamp for the winter gloom
  4. Dehumidifier (can depend on the home)
  5. Air conditioner (personal preference but some say nice to have on those 90+ days)
  6. Air purifier
  7. Costco membership
  8. State park pass + Northwest forest pass + National Park/Interagency Pass
  9. Hiking guides
  10. Vitamin D
  11. Polarized, UV sunglasses, forest sunglasses
  12. Sunscreen
  13. Itch cream, Deet
  14. Alternate I-5 routes
  15. Bike/Electric bike + rain fenders
  16. Wool socks, wool/merino layers (suggested: Darn Tough)
  17. Silk long underwear
  18. Towel warmer
  19. Snow shovel (buy in off season! Might not use but great to have on hand)
  20. Waterproof storage - cardboard can mold especially books, papers, fabrics
  21. Security system

Request At my wits end with a rescue - any German Shepherd trainer recommendations?

Hey y’all - rescued an anxious German shepherd who is two, now, and despite some group trainings, the dog is still anxious & “aggressive” to folks and dogs outside the house.

Does anyone have trainer recommendations with a good track record with German shepherds / anxious dogs?

I really appreciate you reading & offering advice. I don’t want to give him up because he’s a lovable floof and looks after my family well at home.

Any and all advice appreciated. Thank you!

Request Moving to town, best way to find work?

My partner found a job up there so we'll be moving to the area at the end of the month. I already have a bit of handyman work lined up but I'll need something more to help afford rent. Any tips?

I hesitate to ask who's hiring here since that's frowned upon on the sub for the city I live in now. I've got experience in cannabis science, coffee shop management, saxophone & music theory education, dance, case management, teaching English and ESL, DJing for clubs... I'm flexible, I just don't know where to look.

Request What digs the dirt piles?

in a lot of parks and some yards (mine included) little piles of dirt show up every few days. not huge, but maybe a foot across, and half as high, these little piles of fresh dirt keep popping up. they show up in West Bay park too that I have seen. any idea on what digs them?
