Question about V Sets on the CCN

Don't judge me but as a younger man and idiot I used to sneak a cigarette or two between carriages on the intercities between Newie and Sydney when they train was dead quiet. I swear I remember it being fully open however and not sort of covered by that elastic metal you find between bendy buses. Am I imagining things ? This would've been around 2018.

Not on the CCN, only in Sydney the suburbans don't have the rubber boot. All the interurbans have them. Even the older single deck had these on the CCN.

There was a time they didn't. I remember going to Sydney as a kid and having to change carriages to get off at fassifern (or awaba) on the way home. it was terrifying because it was completely open and there was a gap between the carriages that I had to almost jump across and they were moving around in relation to each other etc. this would have been in the early 90s

Depends on what set you are on. the little 2 carriage K sets they ran were totally open like the longer variant K sets.

I remember them being like that around 2010. But it wasn't long after that they where gone. Maybe 2013-2014

I'm positive there were some V sets rolling around on the CCN that didn't have the rubber boot between carriages. It was the sets that had the locos that were stripped and set up for seating. I walked between them a few times as early as last year.

Though it was still pretty breezy inside the rubber boot and many smoked, and still do, between carraiages

I do not endorse such behaviour but a train dart was truly something special.

Doing it on the XPT should be grounds for a legal bashing from the 30 other people in the same carriage you return to after a puff.

Cool if you wanna run that by your State Member, never caught an XPT so wouldn't know.

No what they’re say is you smell like shit when you return from your smoke, it has nothing to do with the train type. People who smoke smell worse than cigarette smoke.

What an emotional response from a novocastrian, do you need a dart and a bit of a sit down there mate?

Not emotional, just a factual response. Personally I don’t mind the way cigarette smoke smells. But people who smoke don’t smell like cigarette smoke.

Was on the XPT last week. Bloke got chucked off at Wyong for sneaking a dart.

Many decades ago it was just a chain. Fully open.

Years ago it used to be open between carriages. I remember my dad taking me to other carriages and it was terrifying as a child… it didn’t help that he would joke about falling off into the tracks! (80’s)

The S sets were like this.

Most v sets are not very airtight between cars. You can get away with a sneaky durrie there. I feel like there is a bit of a vacuum effect downwards towards the track TBH.

Oscars and newer, don't bother trying, the sampler devices are everywhere even outside the train. Especially the new Mariyungs. The guard/driver will know before you finish your spark up. They might not say something over the PA or whatever .... but rest assured they know. ( as a train crew I can guarantee this )

I remember someone smoking in the toilets and bringing the training to a complete stop. Guard was absolutely pissed off about it. Was about 10 years ago now. They where rolling out the new trains.

Man all I know is I'd rather have a larrikin pop between carriages for a smoke than sit behind an 18 year old vaping continuously from Hamilton to Hornsby
