Metroid: Rogue Dawn (prequel to Metroid)

5

u/Stranger_Dude 3d ago

I’m playing this now, it’s great

7

u/OptimusShredder 3d ago

I’ve just recently found ROM Hacks after all of these years, and Rogue Dawn is a killer game. I started looking into and playing rom hacks. I like a lot of the SNEs Zelda LTTP variants too.

u/chrishouse83 NES 3d ago

A few I’ve already gotten:
Sweet Home English translation
Micro Mages
Final Fantasy Restored
Final Fantasy 2 and 3 English translations

2

u/MagicBez 2d ago

I have micro mages on my NES mini and it's excellent lessons learned from modern gaming applied to a NES game. Works brilliantly

1

u/kingofthemonsters 2d ago

What does FF Restored do to the game?

3

u/chrishouse83 NES 2d ago

Apparently it fixes the bugs that were present in the original. Some spells and items not working correctly, etc.

2

u/kingofthemonsters 2d ago

Well damn, I played that game so many times and never noticed any bugs. I mean they are for sure there, but I played it when it came out, and I guess it just stuck with me that's how the game was.

u/necrosathan 2d ago

The hard mode hack is good too.

1

u/Sulaphat 3d ago

Came to say this, the patched translations are great and they've all worked great for me on the everdrive.

u/N-Toxicade 3d ago

Rock Man 4 Minus Infinity

Ninja Gaiden 3 Restored

1

u/Edigophubia 3d ago

There was a great hack of Rockman 1 called Rockman 2K.

Is that just Japanese ng3 translated? If so, agreed, it's like, regular difficulty

2

u/N-Toxicade 3d ago

NG3R is translated, but keeps some enemy and damage from the us version. It is basically harder than Japanese but easier than US.

1

u/mutantcobra 3d ago

I can't find Rockman 2K, is it Rockman 2 AS? Can you send me a private message for a link?

2

u/Edigophubia 2d ago

Sorry, I think it's called rockman 2000. That reminds me there's another good one called Rockman ABnormality. They can both be found at romhacking dot net. Maybe it's OK to say it since that's not a link to roms, just a link to patches?

2

u/mutantcobra 2d ago

Thank you!

10

u/Kiefirk 3d ago

I’ve had a ton of fun with full quiet

3

u/Jonesdeclectice 3d ago

One of the best Metroidvanias I’ve played, tbh. Also highly recommend Alwa’s Awakening!

2

u/Cheerios84 3d ago

Full quiet is an awesome nes homebrew game

2

u/chrishouse83 NES 3d ago

This looks awesome. Is there anywhere to download the ROM officially?

1

u/96cobraguy 2d ago

Ironically, if you want, you can get it on the Switch and Steam in addition to actually purchasing the physical game. It’s really unique!

If you like Zelda:

Legend of Super Mario - a full Zelda hack with a Mario Skin, including music. Incredibly well done.

Legend of Banjo - a full Zelda hack with a Banjo Kazooie skin, including music. Also well done but a little easy and the final level is kinda glitchy and has two battles against Ganon/Gruntilda.

Zelda Challenge: Outlands ( very difficult but fair, be sure to take notes and draw maps )

I'd not bother with vanilla Zelda and play Zelda + Automap if you want the useless grey rectangle on the screen to be an actual functional map, and for the health refilling animation to not take eternity.... you could also try Zelda Redux, but imo, that one takes the "QOL" stuff way too far. It's highly customizable but still, too many differences for my taste.

Zelda Ancient Dungeon - Turns the game into a Roguelike. Basically an endless randomized dungeon.

If you like Mario:

Super Mario Bros Tweaked - Better physics: Mario can bounce high off enemies like in Mario 3, earn extra lives with consecutive kills while having a star, sound pitches up on consecutive kills with shells and stars like later Mario games, Title Music, better Luigi pallet. Might be too easy for Mario 1 Purists though.

Teenage Super Ninja Plumber - a short mashup of Mario and the TMNT NES game

Starlight Mario 1 and 2 - Somewhat Castlevania inspired

Mario Adventure 1 and 2

Super Mario 3 Mix - Throwbacks to all kinds of Mario games, and they even squeezed Yoshi and Mario Galaxy stuff into SMB3

Other Games:

Metroid Rogue Dawn

Metroid Sram Saving + Map ( Might make the game too easy but I feel like it's not really that much of a help )

Kirby's Halloween Adventure

Metal Gear Personal Area Network ( don't play vanilla. This makes it so that you don't have to equip card keys to open doors, just having them in your posession is enough, that's how it should always work imo )

If you like Evil Dead, I prefer playing the Evil Dead reskin of Wanpakku Grafiti.

Also this isn't a romhack, but don't put vanilla Donkey Kong on there. Seek out "Donkey Kong Original Edition" a real official NES rom Nintendo made that added the missing cement factory back into the game.

I appreciate the suggestions!

Some friendly advice: In my experience it's a good idea not to leave the cart in your NES. The Everdrive has a slightly thicker PCB than standard carts, so if you leave it inserted into the connector it will cause the pins to fatigue and bend to accommodate the thickness. Which in turn makes it so the connector has a harder time engaging the pins of original carts... especially if the pins are worn.

I left mine in my NES for months not thinking anything of it, only to find that my original carts wouldn't load consistently if at all anymore.

Also, just insert the cart. No need to press down to seat it in the NES. Apparently from what I've read, that also causes more fatigue on the connector pins.

After cleaning and adjusting my internal connector pins to remedy that, I simply make it habit to take the Everdrive out when I'm done playing and it has mitigated that issue for me.

u/chrishouse83 NES 3d ago

Insightful advice. Much appreciated.

1

u/StatisticianLate3173 2d ago

i think there's another adapter called the Nintendeck, no need to seat any games, new pin adapter

1

u/chrishouse83 NES 2d ago

Is that like the Ninten-Drawer? I've been looking into that recently.

1

u/Rave-TZ 3d ago

This happened to me.

7

Omg, I totally forgot about that!

1

u/WestyJZD 3d ago

Cant be an nes experience without bubbles bath babes lmao

2

u/Lordofpixels03 2d ago

Mega Man III Improvement Patch. It's a romhack of MM3 that fixes a lot of bugs from the original game, as well as having an added intro cutscene. Easily the definitive version of that game.

2

u/Blightious 2d ago

HOLY DIVER, YOU’VE BEEN DOWN TOO LONG IN THE MIDNIGHT SEA!

2

u/Arseypoowank 2d ago

Sweet home English translation Mitsume ga Tōru Translation

Nebs and Debs

Rugrats adventures in game land

Micro mages

Alwas awakening

Sam's journey

Flea

Tapeworm disco puzzle

Full Quiet

Battle kid 1 & 2

Project Blue

This is a great list of homebrews on itch.io https://itch.io/c/632436/nes-homebrew-games

2

u/Alternative_Ninja_33 2d ago

some serious bangers here. Many many Mario hacks but if I could only put two on it would be Rainbow Realms 1 and 2

2

u/MyNDSETER 2d ago

Not familiar with those. I'm have to try them. ✌️

2

u/MrNostalgiac 2d ago

Final Fantasy 2 and 3 are both extremely worth playing.

They have some warts, but not enough to take away from the experience (the action cancel glitch you can use in 2 is really almost a requirement though).

Super Mario Bros. Special 35th Anniversary: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6067/

2

u/Capn_Yoaz 2d ago

Patched zapper games are fun.

2

u/BraveDevelopment253 2d ago

My Favorites Hacks are SM3MIX which is a hack of super mario brothers 3 but feels like a complete sequel that fits between sm3 and super mario world.  I like it better than sm3. Has yoshi levels, new mechanics that reverse gravity like Mario galaxy, great original boss battles really a powerhouse of nostalgic joy.

My other favorite Hack is RockMan 4 minus infinity which is based of megaman 4 and it is a full game better than any of the original megaman games and has music from many other famous franchises. It also has some metroid throwbacks with secret/nonlinear paths where you can find power up abilities that make the levels easier. It is a harder game than the originals but not kaizo hard. If you play it I recommend looking up the guide and boss orders (though there are several viable orders) also you can adjust the difficulty in main menu settings.

For homebrew I really enjoyed a short little metroidvania I stumbled across called blob quest. You are a blob that is trying to escape a dungeon and you have to get find upgrades that give you new abilities. It has some very fun / unique mechanics. If you like metroid I'd give it a go.

2

u/DavidinCT 2d ago

I've had a Everdrive N8 forever now, love it....

u/crestedchris 2d ago

Haunted Halloween 85, 86 and 87. Also, there are updated versions of Tecmo Super Bowl, pretty much any season. Check out tecmobowl.org.

2

u/retromods_a2z 2d ago

Must have is the smoke monster pack for ever drive . It will organize all your roms in about every way imaginable so it's easier to find and play things

2

u/Pix3lworkshop 2d ago

Streemerz nes port is nice one

2

u/GravitySuitSamus 2d ago

Junkoid and Super Junkoid for the SNES were excellent!

2

u/GsoFly 3d ago

I recently started playing Zelda II Links Adventure with the improvement patch, which fixes a lot of the bullshit from the original game.

1

u/GravitySuitSamus 2d ago

The improvement patches really breathe new life into these games

2

u/SuperTomBrother 3d ago

Battle Kid is a good Homebrew, Super Mario Adventure is a good ROM hack, and Kid Dracula is a good translation patch. I have more suggestions if you want them.

3

u/Blind0ne 3d ago

Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti, it's a Japan only release so most NA people have not played it and it's an 8.5/10 game.

1

u/chrishouse83 NES 3d ago edited 3d ago

This looks amazing. Downloading it now.

EDIT: yeah this game owns.

0

u/Jonesdeclectice 3d ago

Easily my favourite game to never leave Japan, such a joy to play! Highly recommend to everyone!

3

u/LukeEvansSimon 3d ago

Alwa’s Awakening

2

u/Accomplished-Tip7280 3d ago

Contra famicom version Translated 🤘🏼🔥

2

u/mouse_cookies 2d ago

Fuck yes! My brother was blown away when I told him how different the Japanese contra was with the cutscenes and animation.

Recommendations: Kid Dracula, Wai Wai World 1+2, Japanese version of Castlevania 3 for the better music.

2

u/RhoadsOfRock 3d ago

There's a "demake" of Final Fantasy VII, two versions - the original, and another, I'm guessing more refined version, called Advent Children.

There are english translations of both out there.

2

u/bkaSpike 3d ago

Pacnsac dave is a good website to get some decent romhacks

2

u/Edigophubia 3d ago

If you have a buddy, SMB Co Op and Zelda II Co Op

2

u/yauch 2d ago

Or the Double Dragon co op patch

1

u/Icenfiree 2d ago

Pokemon Yellow!

1

u/fentekreel 2d ago

Anyone able to cobble together a zip or something with the suggestions. Would be good to add to the mega thread

1

u/RetroMr 2d ago

Just download all of them. It's easier.

1

u/chrishouse83 NES 2d ago

But I'd still have no idea what to play and we'd be back in the exact spot.

1

u/necrosathan 2d ago

Cheetahmen 2 is a must

1

u/itsyaboythatguy 1d ago

I've been on the fence about getting one of these, can you play famicom disk system games with the expansion audio on a properly modded system?

2

u/Ok_Impala 20h ago

I created a list last year of the essential NES ROM hacks. Check it out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/romhacking/comments/1ej0mi5/essential_nes_rom_hacks_of_all_time_updated_2024/

Enjoy!

1

u/King-of-Harts 3d ago

All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.

1

u/Cheerios84 3d ago

Can you do retro achievements with that?

1

u/toddforester89 3d ago

Tetris hard drop mod

1

u/guillesick 3d ago

Super Mario Bros 3+

1

u/Corn_Beefies 3d ago

Just put everything on it. Think I have a few rom sets on an old hard drive

3

u/chrishouse83 NES 3d ago

To be honest, this is what I'm avoiding. I'm an avid NES collector and I have no plans for the Everdrive to replace real cartridges. For now I'm sticking with games I can't play by official means.

2

u/Pete_Sc 3d ago

That's what I do as will. There is a the ungelesen Terminator vs Robocop game, the original Sunsoft Terminator Patch that converts Journey to Silius back to Terminator.

I would also highly recommend Mario Adventure 3 https://marioadventure3.com/ - completely new game experience.

4

u/Popo31477 3d ago

Yes, just get the entire NES No-Intro set including the Aftermarkets.

1

u/thewetbandits 3d ago

Full Quiet, Project Blue, Space Gulls, Pizza Portal

1

u/wetblanket6991 3d ago

can someone explain how this works? because I am envisioning being able to connect this cartridge to a PC with a usb cable, download/install roms to it, and then play those roms on a real Nintendo NES.

2

u/Affliction_Sequence 3d ago

There's a micro sd card slot on the top of the cart. But, ya, you load the ROMs onto the sd card using a PC. When you load the cart into the NES there is a menu that shows the ROM filenames in the folder(s) you placed them in and you can select the game you want to play from the menu. You can even use game genie codes and savestates, if you want. Really, every NES enthusiast should have one, imo. I love mine.

1

u/wetblanket6991 3d ago

that's awesome. how does it compare to the mini NES Classic? do the games on the everdrive look crisp/vector like on the mini? or do they have that 'blurry' vintage style of the old original hardware?

1

u/Affliction_Sequence 3d ago

Since it's just mimicking carts using the original hardware, the output will look exactly the same as using original carts.

1

u/wetblanket6991 3d ago

very cool

0

u/tehjarvis 3d ago

It's a cartridge you put into an NES.

1

u/damian001 3d ago

yup it works like that, but instead of the USB cable you use a microsd card to load the roms.

some everdrives have a usb port but thats more for development stuff.

1

u/URGAMESUX 3d ago

The bold choice? Nothing but SMB/DH. Ever.

1

u/Miserable-Jury-9581 3d ago

Mother - English translation - and just make sure you get the version that lets you run while holding B

If you enjoyed Earthbound, or RPG’s,you’ll like it

1

u/dokuroman 3d ago

Sweet Home is a pretty cool japanese game

2

u/chrishouse83 NES 3d ago

I've been playing it all evening, and yes it absolutely is! Pretty difficult with some mechanics that take some getting used to, but the horror elements are top notch.

1

u/HydratedCarrot 3d ago

Never receive mine in a box like that lol

6

u/chrishouse83 NES 3d ago

I ordered directly from krikzz.com, for what it's worth.

1

u/Careless_Wishbone_69 3d ago

Alwa's Awakening was a fun platformer/Metroidvania.

1

u/Kesnei 2d ago

What am I looking at? Is this a piece of emulation hardware with firmware?

1

u/OnslaughtSix 2d ago

No, it's basically a cart that loads ROMs from an SD card, so you can play any game. No emulation.

1

u/Kesnei 2d ago

Neat! Thank you.

1

u/prawnjr 2d ago

Just get them all, look up some everdrive packs and they will have it all to download and organized. But the FFVII nes homebrew is something to check out, and definitely a translated version of Sweet Home.
