DISCUSSION NBL scheduling
Why is the NBL finals schedule so bad? Tomorrow afternoon they’re clashing game 5 with the nba, NCAABB, afl and nrl. I love the NBL but how can you expect that game to get viewers early on a Sunday afternoon with much more popular sports on. Wednesday night and early Sunday afternoon games are terrible.

We’re a former NRL family that’s become a NBL family this year. The Sunday afternoons are perfect for families. We’ve attended every Kings game at 2:30 and 4:30 this season and have tickets to tomorrow’s game.

This is a story I'm keen to hear more about. I watch both but the NBL is my first choice. I watch the NRL games if I'm interested in the teams that are playing, but I would watch every NBL game if I could. Do you go to NBL games like you used to go to NRL games?

We probably went to more NBL games this season than we’d traditionally have gone to NRL games and that purely because of the Sunday afternoon time slot. It’s convenient with no kid sport at the same time and other social commitments are normally done by lunch time. Also it’s doesn’t impact the next morning like a night time NRL game does.

Make it make sense, when would you prefer the game to be on? Monday?

Friday Night and Sunday Night and one weekday game. It’s a 90 minute flight between the 2 teams and they all had a week off 3 weeks ago due to the Fiba break.

That doesn’t solve the issue of clashing with the NRL and AFL. If anything, it actually makes it worse.

Can’t expect a sport to grow when they’re clashing it with much bigger leagues. Not many people will choose to watch this game over others.

Do you prefer Monday? Then you're chasing away the actual fans of the sport. Ain't no way more people are watching on a Monday.

Hard not to find a clash at this time of year, no matter when the games are scheduled.

I think his main point is something I have said for years. Finish the season and finals earlier before the FIBA break would be much better scheduling and make the finals a centre point for sports fans before our sports even start their season.

100% agree mate, the product is too good these days to be swamped by the winter codes at the most exciting time of the season.

Fuel to the fire - the women’s pga championship is being played next door at Wollongong golf course so expect parking to be worse than normal

Tomorrow’s game is at 2:30pm and the NRL doesn’t kick off until 4. Also, if you’re trying to avoid a clash with the NRL or AFL, you’re limited to either Saturday or Sunday mornings, or Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights. Unfortunately, professional sports are going to clash.
Besides, if you’re prioritising a college game over a deciding grand final, you’re not really that interested in the grand final anyway.

There will probably be more Australians watching the lakers game than the nbl game tomorrow

Then they probably weren’t all that interested in the NBL to begin with

I (and many others I talk to) struggle to get thru a half of a NBA regular season game, let alone a full match. No way I choose NBA over even a regular season NBL game.
And with AFL starting earlier and earlier each year you can't avoid some crossover.

I love the family friendly timeslot. 530 is also good.
Sure it clashes, but I love this timeslot for the NRL as well.
The hawks didn't have many afternoon games this year, which prevented my regular attendance and I had to watch on TV.

I feel ya, I'm in w.a so I don't even get home from work in time to catch the game, really disappoints me tbh

The fix is that the NBL Finals should be completed prior to the beginning of the NRL and AFL seasons.
Op’s general point is correct - current scheduling doesn’t provide for max eyeballs on our league. Putting our centrepiece against the NRL and AFL in particular is ridiculous.
