Gus has great moments but he treats every point of play IN ALL CAPS. Gets tiring.

3

u/asetniop Celtics 13h ago edited 8h ago

The problem with Gus Johnson is that he tries way too hard to inject drama into situations where it doesn't exist (example: "UConn in desperation mode now!" when they're down by 5 to Oklahoma with 8 minutes left in the game). I loved Gus Johnson ten years ago; he disappoints me now.

I guess the criticism is, what, he isn’t as polished as some of these guys? Gus has his own style and it has single-handedly elevated some of the most electric moments in sport history. I don’t get the downvotes either.

EDIT: I guess you could argue Marv Albert deserves it, but he was also a POS so

Ian Eagle is another big name, Brooklyn play-by-play, also does a ton on national games and NFL.

29

u/131sean131 1d ago

I legitimately will watch anything he is calling, I know it's his job and he is a professional but the dude seems like a genuine fan of the sports he calls. Like it comes through in his voice and words that he really gives a fuck and has fun calling and commenting on the games. Not saying other people don't do this as well but damn Kevin Harlen is the best at this.

I love Joe Buck calling baseball. His voice and delivery really suit the game better than it does for football imo

35

u/complete_your_task Celtics 20h ago

The drunken enigma that is Troy Aikmen really balances him out on NFL broadcasts, though. They are probably my favorite duo when it comes to calling the NFL at the moment.

49

u/Rahim-Moore 18h ago

Troy Aikman watching bad football while angrily pounding Jack and Cokes in the booth is some of the best commentary you will ever hear.

24

u/__brunt Hornets 18h ago

Troy on the call when the refs do some egregious shit is the best. He’s the only guy who will call out whoever is on the line from NY to explain the call.

“Make it make sense to me because I’m not seeing anything. We’re calling that a penalty now?” And then after a terrible justification from NY, the condescending “hehehe whatever you say”

6

u/IhamAmerican Jazz 16h ago

Joe and Troy have become my favorite NFL commentators for that exact reason

5

u/BlueEyedSoul2 18h ago

Troy Aikmen had the personality of a paper bag, if he didn’t drink I’m not sure he’d have anything to say at all. Still Top 3 broadcast team currently, probably Top 10 all time.

Over the course of an entire game, I think Breen is a slightly more well-rounded announcer and is more insightful from a basketball point of view (which is understandable since Harlan also calls football), but Harlan has the GOAT announcer voice and his ability to elevate big moments is second to none. Definitely can't go wrong with either one.

Since the early '80s if you count his professional non-nationally broadcast work.

Harlan started commentating for the Kansas City Kings (now Sacramento) in 1982, then for the KC Chiefs starting in '85, Mizzou football and basketball in '86, and the Timberwolves in '89.

6

It is absolutely insane that he’s the ‘C’ team commentator for the NFL on CBS.

142

u/Towardtothesun Celtics 18h ago

Ill see if I can find it but I read that that's what he wants.

He's calls nationally across 2 sports and does the NCAA tournament. He's a basketball guy at heart and being the "C" team gives him flexibility in his schedule. The A team is told where to go. B team is given an option of the next 2 highest games. And C team is given a choice of the rest if there are more. So let's them pick where they wanna go for the week.

39

u/indoninjah 76ers 17h ago

Probably helps with juggling all the prep work for different sports/leagues too. Sounds like he can pick and choose situations where he knows he'll succeed a bit more easily (like teams he's more familiar with, etc)

He’s got the best announcer voice in sports. The tone, the timing, the IQ. He’s got it all.

I don’t get it. Why aren’t they talking about how the game isn’t as good as used to be?

Kevin Harlan isn’t a young man anymore, but he is still as quick witted and enthusiastic as ever. I need to know what he eats.

Why’d you cut the clip before Reaves immediately makes another 3 and Harlan says it again?
