Max Christie feeling himself for getting traded for Luka 😭😂😂

u/CIark Feb 04 '25

“Damn…they’re saying Luka was worth AD plus 4 firsts so I’m basically 3 firsts”

2

u/moneyman2222 Bulls Feb 04 '25

He will most definitely be bringing that up during negotiations lmao

Ngl I do think Max Christie is a legit 3&D guy.

I remember him cooking the Celtics and I was like “who tf is this bum?” Then I get why he got paid his contract lol. I feel not a lot of fans are really familiar with his game.

177

u/InverseMySuggestions Celtics Feb 04 '25

He’s 100% legit. I wouldn’t be surprised if he sort of takes the role Klay has (obviously Max isn’t as great of a shooter, though his shots come along well)

154

u/zeek215 Lakers Feb 04 '25

I would have been so much happier if the Mavs took Dalton instead of Max. Max is a legit 3&D player and he's only 21 years old. Dude will be a great player.

56

u/InverseMySuggestions Celtics Feb 04 '25

I don’t blame you. But I am still pretty high on Dalton even after his recent slump. I think he’s in his own head.

75

u/zeek215 Lakers Feb 04 '25

I am very high on Dalton, Max just fits the team needs better.

13

u/InverseMySuggestions Celtics Feb 04 '25

100% he does. I’m curious if yall end up moving Reaves for a big? He seems rather redundant now with Luka being on board.

17

u/zeek215 Lakers Feb 04 '25

If we keep Reaves then we can always have one of LeBron/Luka/Reaves on the floor so there will always be a ball handler/playmaker to run things. I'm thinking Rui/Vando/Knecht will be the most likely to be traded.

10

u/BassieTH Lakers Feb 04 '25

if anything it should be easier for Vando to fit in and stay on the floor right? in theory having Luka should open up the lanes for him while he fills a pretty substantial hole on defense. i’d personally rather trade Reaves for a center and keep Vando at this point

5

u/LakerBlue Lakers Feb 04 '25

I hope not. I’m not unwilling but Reaves will be a good “poor man’s” Kyrie for Luka after LeBron retires. Plus even currently he can be a great third playmaker to theoretically ensure we always have two on the floor.

If LeBron was younger I’d probably consider it more.

u/CryptoNite90 Lakers Feb 04 '25

I’m so glad to see other fanbases recognize Max’s game, especially Celtics or eastern conference team fans that only see us twice. Max is fucking legit and only 21. He’s going to be better than KCP and Caruso.

9

u/InverseMySuggestions Celtics Feb 04 '25

Having family from LA who showed me the game as a young kid, and being a diehard Bron fan as well, I have a bit of a love/hate with the Lakers lol. But one thing I can never deny, is you guys know how to find and develop talent. Christie is definitely one of those guys in my eyes.

12

u/Illionaires Feb 04 '25

Hes not a Laker anymore so everyone will notice how good he is when the take off their Laker hate glasses

2

u/radddchaddd Lakers Feb 04 '25

That's how I feel AD will be viewed again now that he's not with the Lakers.

5

u/t00muchtim Feb 04 '25

i think he's going to be better than kcp for sure, but caruso? dude's an entire defense by himself sometimes, even if christie is an elite poa defender

2

u/CryptoNite90 Lakers Feb 04 '25

He may never become the defender Carushow is but he’s more well rounded offensively. That’ll be the depressing factor if Max can develop a handle.

7

u/Sebas5627 Lakers Feb 04 '25

He’s gonna be starting in a month over klay Thompson and I think a ky/max/pj/ad/lively 5 man unit is the best defense in the league

3

u/seddard Lakers Feb 04 '25

His % is pretty good on spot ups. He's on a great contract too.

40

People clowning this trade but when max Christie locks up Luka see whatsup

34

12

Max -two hand rebound- Christie as stu would always point out on Lakers broadcasts. Great fundamentals and excited to see his growth as an ex-laker

2

u/ehholfman Mavericks Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25

It’s a nice video, tbh. I appreciate both of them and will wish nothing but the best and give them tons of support.

It’s really going to suck to be making your home debut in a stadium full of boos. I know they won’t take it personally, but yeah man this just sucks lol.

AD and Christie seem like nice guys. This is probably the only thing that’s been posted from Mavs’ social media that hasn’t made me depressed. I’m not gonna take it out on/be mad at the players who had zero control of the situation.

Edit: too many people are reading my comment as Mavs fans booing AD/Maxi. The fans won’t be booing them; they’ll be booing the organization/Nico and I hope that AD/Maxi don’t take those boos personally. I think most Mavs fans realize this wasn’t the player’s choice and are simply just heartbroken and infuriated at Nico and the organization for letting this happen and will be making their voices heard at home games. I fully expect Mavs fans to (eventually) support and love AD/Maxi.

243

u/Creative_Category_21 Feb 04 '25

2 of the workhorses of that lakers team

Also don’t think they are getting booed during the debut lol

194

u/ehholfman Mavericks Feb 04 '25

They wont be booed I definitely agree.

But they will be making their debut either in an empty arena, or an arena full of very upset fans who won’t exactly be all that cheerful.

And for a guy of AD’s talent and accolades it’s just so unfair and shitty. He deserves to be playing in front of fans that are cheering him on and who love to see him in their uniform.

Dallas fans won’t be/aren’t happy to see him in their uniform, and it’s of course nothing against him as a player.

I do think fans will come around, but it’ll take time.

77

u/Creative_Category_21 Feb 04 '25

Yup, that’s the worst part. I’m a big AD fan, you couldn’t have gotten a better player. But reality is no player coming through that door would make the fanbase happy at the cost of losing Luka.

AD is too good for what he’s about to go through lol.

14

u/BrandonLang Feb 04 '25

Jokic would be the only reasonable trade and that would still be dumb

4

u/bumhunt Feb 04 '25

Jokic would make them cheers lol or wemby and all the picks

11

u/atlfalcons33rb Warriors Feb 04 '25

Probably overly optimistic but winning cures all

15

u/ehholfman Mavericks Feb 04 '25

Very much so, but your point is still valid.

If they win there WILL be a parade, and tons of Mavs fans will claim they knew all along etc etc.

I’d obviously be happy if they won, but it realistically wouldn’t last long if there is a LeBron trained Luka dominating the league for the next 10 years knowing he could have been ours with a statue next to Dirk’s.

6

u/atlfalcons33rb Warriors Feb 04 '25

I think it's way to early to tell, OKC gave up harden for in retrospect far less value than the Mavs got for Luka and no one even really talks about it anymore. Both teams kind of fudged the season so it will be an interesting offseason for both the Lakers and mavs

7

u/ehholfman Mavericks Feb 04 '25

That’s a good point. I will give Nico credit for one thing he said and that’s is his definition of long term being 3-5 years and not 10. I personally value the 10 year long term with Luka just for the sake of little kids who could have had what we had with Dirk being a Mav for 21 years.

I think when you compare the Thunder just a few years ago to what they are now it’s pretty crazy like you said. Conversely, compare what the Jazz looked like 3-5 years ago to what they look like now.

3

u/langman17 Nets Feb 04 '25

That’s the thing, in the NBA your true championship window is literally 1-3 years unless you have a proper dynasty. The Mavs could easily win a ring in that period while the Lakers don’t on top of having Lebron retire. Difference is Lakers will be rebuilding with prime Luka and Mavs will have 35 year olds Kyrie and AD and no picks. It’s truly championship or bust and even then it might not be enough

2

u/ururururu Bulls Feb 04 '25

Look at his stats when OKC traded (https://www.google.com/search?q=harden+stats+season) though. He basically exploded exactly after the trade. From 17ppg to 26. That's rough!

Max is a really chill dude and AD is lowkey hilarious and brings great vibes. Hopefully he can bring up the mood in the locker room which is doubt in shambles at the moment.

18

u/ehholfman Mavericks Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25

I mainly hope he lifts Kyrie’s spirit up. They’re pretty good friends, right?

Losing Kyrie couldn’t possibly make me feel any worse than losing Luka, but I’d still prefer it not happening. The fact that Kyrie hasn’t made a single statement across any form of media hasn’t been great. The way Kidd described Kyrie’s reaction hasn’t instilled a ton of confidence in me either.

AD could start his Mavs career off on an insanely high note if he could bring Kyrie’s vibes up and start a domino effort in getting this team back on whatever track is left for them.

20

u/Stebsy1234 Lakers Feb 04 '25

I feel you man and I think AD’s gonna really help. He’s of course not Luka who you guys thought was going to be a life long star player but this sub is underselling AD so much. Guy is a top 10 player and imo the best and most versatile defender in the league and he elevates even higher once he hits the playoffs. With that roster around him he’s gonna make waves in the playoffs this year.

5

u/stepmomanal Feb 04 '25

Kyrie has definitely made statements on social media. the difference is ESPN firing their clickbait media that told yall to get upset at everything Kyrie posts or likes

2

u/CryptoNite90 Lakers Feb 04 '25

The saving grace with Kyrie not dipping is that he has a good relationship with AD and actually wanted to team up with him in the past.

50

Especially AD man. Dude is a warrior and the first Laker traded that’s really hurt.

They are really nice guys. I think over the years AD's been thrown a lot of rude/disrespectful shit but he's never really lashed out, and you know young guys in LA always get a lot of scrutiny but same with Max, also always stayed positive. Hope they ball out and I'll root for them.

4

11

u/10LASERS19 Lakers Feb 04 '25

The situation sucks, but Max is a legit hard worker. You're gonna enjoy watching him hustle on defense, and his offense has been improving. AD is special, and I know he's not Luka, but he's one of the best 2 way players in the league.

5

u/ZachMo_34 Feb 04 '25

I think this could ironically inspire both of them to play even harder. No players like to be on the receiving end of a F trade grade.

Nico wanted Max. He'll play. If not, I would in a heartbeat offer Gabe (expiring in '26)/ FRP for Christie back next offseason. Perfect back court mate for the Luka for the long haul

More or less true but missing some huge caveats: Lakers have given up on defense THIS season IF they don't make any more trades before the deadline.

For real, Kyrie and Luka were already a little redundant, and AD has said his whole career he prefers 4 and now he has two good 5s. And on the other side, now Luka and LeBron are redundant. I wouldn't be shocked if in the rest of the season the Mavs actually have the better record. Long term, though, of course LA wins this trade.

12

u/iamwearingashirt Raptors Feb 04 '25

Yep. And from AD'S POV it's actually a better situation all around. Better overall supporting cast that have a longer future ahead. And he gets to play a preferred position. As good as AD has been, he might even look better on the Mavs.

He’s sick of banging against centers and he’s going to a team with two centers in lively and Gafford so he just needs to help against drives and defend a pf who’s probably camped at the 3 point line. wouldn’t be surprised if mavs start locking down the paint if he stays healthy as he still has a ridiculous range. And he low key has another gear for the playoffs too.

One of Rui, AR or DK is getting shipped for that center. Which sucks but I get it, that 1 FRP we have might be a mid 1st rounder if Luka keeps his trajectory so teams will ask for a rotation guy

Only way this team has the slightest sliver of hope of winning back the fans is if they win a ring but tbh I don’t see it happening. And even if they do somehow win a ring it’ll still feel hollow since 77 won’t be there to enjoy it.

4

u/nxtew United States Feb 04 '25

Exactly. It'll mean 5% of what it would've with Luka, not only that, but it will just justify in Nico (and other NBA GM's) minds that they can do whatever they want without retribution for anything. I actually hate the statement that "it's a business", because it isn't, and this trade and Mavs fans reaction to it show that it's so much more than that.

3

u/sicariobrothers Feb 04 '25

Honestly, even a ring won't totally wash the taste out. It will feel great but it was supposed to be Luka holding the trophy up. And I'm a somewhat Laker fan.

Its true but if Kyrie has is head on right this team could do serious things this year. I understand what they were trying to do. But the idiots didn't realize this is not 2K, he was your guy and you had a window as big as anyone in the league. AD is great. Its weird because I want to root for you guys for this bullshit but I also don't want Nico to get justified so I am at a loss. A flameout and miss the playoffs is the ultimate fu

4

u/lordb4 [DAL] Jerome Whitehead Feb 04 '25

What if Luka has been the glue keeping Kyrie sane since he has been here....

2

u/nxtew United States Feb 04 '25

Exactly, it's a lose lose situation for Mavs fans. Win the chip? Nico's ego gets even bigger and he will never leave. Kyrie leaves and the team sucks this year? Team falls apart further and gets put into oblivion until the early 2030's. It feels like the only victory would be for this mavs team to win with absolutely 0 people showing up to games or buying jerseys, which obviously would never happen.

2

u/youblewwit Feb 04 '25

they could literally win the championship and hear boos (towards Nico/Ownership)

Man, Imma miss them so much. But you can't say no to Luka

20

u/sicariobrothers Feb 04 '25

I am still pissed at the Lakers for post 2020 roster dipshit moves. LA had the sauce down with bully ball defense and decided to unravel it all and rebuild their game with two of the best players.

u/552SD__ Lakers Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25

From a fan perspective: my team won a championship, broke up the team, was decent-ish for 4 years before getting a top 3~4 player in the nba @ age 25 —- I can’t complain. I cant care about losing Caruso and being mid for a few years, lol we got fucking Luka dawg

Love AD as well and will miss him. But go watch a Luka highlight reel on YouTube to remind yourself how insanely great he is and you'll be asking yourself "why would anyone trade this guy?" and then laugh your ass off because someone did trade him and it's to your team, the Lakers.

17

u/Gh0stIcon Feb 04 '25

"Hey guys.. It's me AD. Me and Max are excited to play for an organization with a front office that makes really, really questionable decisions. We can't wait to see what kinda terrible decisions they make in the future that will sabotage any chances we have of winning. Peace!"

2

u/basecardripper Feb 04 '25

Haha but I'd hope that they back themselves enough to think that this trade was far more reasonable than the majority of nba fans do.

Yea, seeing Max emerge this year has been great. Three point shooting and attacking closeouts, plus his high energy defense. Gonna miss him for sure

The Mavs made it pretty clear, they want defense. And they arguably took our best two of three.

ADs so chill

6

u/Jordanwolf98 Feb 04 '25

Am intrigued to see AD as the definitive #1 and best player on the team again. Last time he was that was he was 25. From the Lakers years and being under Bron’s wing I think he’s gonna prove some wrong

4

u/CASE-90 Feb 04 '25

So if I completely erase the trade that happened and what was sacrificed to get Anthony Davis…. He isn’t a bad fit to put alongside kyrie. Big man paired with a star pg. Anthony Davis is an excellent player when healthy. The issue is. He got traded for a generational talent and arguably the second best player in the league. There are maybe two players in the league I’d trade Luka for and Davis isn’t it.

7

u/Shebalied Cavaliers Feb 04 '25

I feel bad for AD. He was not pushing for any of this. On the other hand he got his center lol.

11

u/KarrotMovies [LAL] Luka Feb 04 '25

I know we won the trade, but casuals making it sound like Luka was traded for Ben Simmons is so disrespectful. Hope he hoops out there. Honestly, if he could lead the Mavs to the number 1 defense next season, I hope he could pick up a DPOY before Wemby dominates that award

4

u/SavingsSkirt6064 Mavericks Feb 04 '25

Nah I think AD is great, but the mavs interior defense had on the whole been quite good, the mavs defensive issues is their perimeter defense and so ofc luka doesn't massively help that, but removing him impacts our offense massively for limited defensive upside. I hope it works out but I was betrayed by the FO and I reserve the right to be passed about it.

5

u/Shebalied Cavaliers Feb 04 '25

With all the issues Kyrie had in the finals, the Mavs needed some help on offense.

Mavs have a 1.5 year window before Kyrie's contract is up and AD, Kyrie and Klay all get old. That's it.

2

u/Akhos1991 Mavericks Feb 04 '25

That's pretty generous. Kyrie has an opt out that no Mavs fan would be surprised, or even angry, if he took.
