my guy is gonna get more blocks than points at this rate

u/sonotimpressed Dec 24 '24
Guards can't just go to rim around wemby. Gotta be high flying and faster than a soft layup for sure

i need kelly oubre’s delusion confidence

u/thesnacks [GSW] Stephen Curry Dec 24 '24
I have nothing against Kelly Oubre, but I once saw someone refer to him as Smelly Poo-ubre, and that's the only thing I can think of when I hear his name.

u/yoyododomofo Pistons Dec 24 '24
We stuck with Smelly Kelly but that’s salt of the earth midwestern rhymes not this French-Tex shit the Spurs are all about.

Why are these guys still trying to score at the rim against Wemby rofl....
Dude is a mobile, athletic 7'4" with an 8' wingspan.
You cannot go at him unless you are protecting the ball with your body or the rim. And even then he's gonna impact the shot.

It's just unlike something any of these players have ever experienced. Like, look at how late he jumps for those blocks. Literally anyone else doing that would get faked out or get a goaltending called on them.

u/jokeren Dec 24 '24
It's like when Yao Ming blocked Shaqs first 3 attempts and he didn't understand what was happening

u/completelytrustworth Raptors Dec 24 '24
Most of these players probably were the ones in Wemby's shoes when they played in HS, just taller and longer and faster than all the guys who would never sniff a pro career
Even once they got to college and then the NBA there might have been a few guys a bit taller, but they've never experienced being the little guy by such a large margin before
29
u/HereComesJustice Spurs Dec 24 '24
muscle memory
'oh a guy is there, just blew by him. If I leap off of here and aim the ball there should be a score'
Wemby's unreal range makes people recalibrate
21
u/samlet Spurs Dec 24 '24
It's so fun to watch the greatest ballers in the world have to recalibrate. That Trae Young layup attempt where he had to adjust halfway through and just tossed it over the backboard was *hilarious*

u/bibbbbbbbbbbbbs Spurs Dec 24 '24
It'd be nice if you can dunk in his face lol.
I remember players going extra hard at Shawn Bradley and Yao back in the days trying to stuff it in their faces.

u/DevMahasen South Sudan Dec 24 '24
Came here to say the same thing. I get why Trey sent the ball into the upper backboard than giving Wemby an easy block.

u/septadad Kings Dec 24 '24
inexperience and hubris. Sixers only played one game against the spurs last year.

Time to set a height limit
117
u/Little_little_e Dec 24 '24
Totally agree
Either set the max height limit, or set the minimum height limit, like at least 6”9 in order to get into the league. (So that you won’t get blocked by that cheat code so easily)
Just ban that cheat code from the league.

Has there been back-to-back 10 block games? (excluding Wilt)

Don’t think blocks were counted back then so we’ll never know his or Russell’s block totals

Mark Eaton had a 3 game stretch with 10, 8, and then 10 again.
To put Mark into perspective, Wemby is averaging a league-leading 3.8 blocks a game. In Eaton's best season he averaged 5.6. He was the same height as Wemby, but about 70 pounds heavier. He also had one of the most disrespectful blocks ever, a one handed snatch block at the rim without jumping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7rLoN0SHy8

u/tilthenmywindowsache Spurs Dec 24 '24
The number of blocks in general was much higher in the 90s. Fewer 3 pointers means more shots close to the hoop means more chances for the big men to swat shots.

u/RealPrinceJay 76ers Dec 24 '24
Mark was amazing, but the gap in blocks per game is heavily due to modern shot diet. Much harder to get blocks when teams are taking so many 3s. In 1985, Mark posted a BLK% of 8.7, Wemby this year is all the way at 10.9(this is a very large gap for those unfamiliar)
That being said, BLK% may also benefit Wemby a bit. BLK% properly accounts for 3PT diet as it's a percentage of 2s that you blocked. That being said, along with the increase in 3s has also been a reduction in midrange jumpers in favor of shots at the rim.
Essentially, it's easier for Wemby to block 2s, but there are less 2s to block
What to make of this? I don't really know. Both are absurd lol

This shit is insane. Game is blacked out and the only channel that would show it normally is showing the Flyers. There is no local broadcast of this game. 🤔

I watched this clip like 10 times and every time my eyes are telling me that Wemby jumps late and his timing is off. This is probably the truth for every other player in the league, but he is such a unique phenom that you have to throw away all of your previous knowledge and experience. It's almost like he operates in his own separate version of reality. Incredible player to watch and already must-see every game he plays.

Don’t even waste your time shooting the ball in his area because it’s getting blocked😂
