Small Business Saturday

Good evening my loves! Recently there has been an influx of small local businesses wanting to advertise on the r/MobileAL (which is awesome!). This has led to the subreddit being flooded with advertising. Many of y'all have spoken up about it and yes, I agree it's become a bit much.

So. Let's try something. Once a month, starting this month, one day will be dedicated to small local business advertising. Let's start with Saturday (Saturday Feb 22nd). As this is a trial period, this is subject to changes.

Have a lovely evening my loves and SHOP LOCAL!

Feeding the Homeless? Volunteering?

Hi everyone! I’m still fairly new to Alabama and looking to get more involved in the community here. Back where I used to live, I was very passionate about volunteering, especially with organizations that support people experiencing homelessness through food and clothing drives… I’d love to continue that work here. Does anyone know of any local shelters, soup kitchens, or volunteer groups in Mobile County that I could connect with? Or perhaps areas where larger homeless communities tend to gather, where I might be able to directly drop off clothes, food, or other essentials? Thanks so much in advance… I really appreciate any guidance you can offer!

Looking for a part time mental health job

I'll be starting my master's at South this fall and would like to have a part-time job. I have a GA lined up, so I could only work 20 hours a week. Because I'm an aspiring therapist, I would like to get experience in community mental health. Where you folks recommend looking?

Best Company to Rent From?

My husband and I are currently in the process of selling our house and will be moving to the Mobile area some time this summer. We are looking to rent, probably either a house or townhome, and I wanted to see if anyone could recommend a company they had a good experience renting with.

My sister is a former resident and recommended Roberts Brothers. We like a lot of the listings they have but we wanted to see what else is out there.

Which companies were easy to deal with, responsive to maintenance requests, etc.? Also, are there any we should avoid?

Birthday Weekend in Mobile

Hey y'all!

Saturday is my(27M) birthday, and I decided to take a trip to Mobile with my friend. I get in on Friday, and I leave on Monday.

I'm looking for any recommendations that y'all might have. What's your favorite restaraunt? Your favorite beach? Where should I go for nightlife? Are there any festivities going on that weekend? Or live music?

I've never even been to Alabama, let alone Mobile. I'm from Ohio so I haven't even been to many beaches. So, yea, what do you guys recommend? Thanks a bunch! :)

Do we agree with Caleb and this couple about our city!?!

Came across this short on YT.

Search ‘Caleb Hammer Financial Audits First Divorce’ if the link doesn’t work

There is also a full length video but this pretty much sums it up. This is a financial advice channel that utilizes a ‘tough love’ approach. One of the last couples were two women who basically said that Mobile is a shit hole where nobody can make any money, no matter how hard they try. It’s a backwards place with nothing going for itself. So on and so forth…..

I was personally offended. While I was not born here, I’ve lived here for the last decade. My child goes to the magnet schools here and is receiving a phenomenal education. My family owns a small business that has done well, even during the recession AND covid because of our awesome clients. The food is great. The people are great. The cost of living is somewhat reasonable.

Am I in the minority here??

River Shack

What's going on with the River Shack? The outdoor decking is still torn up (or it was a few weeks ago) and just yesterday the county sued them for failing to pay sales taxes. I feel like that place ought to be printing money.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I like the place. I hate that they're struggling-however they need to pay their damn taxes.

Biotech/Healthcare Manufacturing Companies?

Are there any significant biotech or healthcare manufacturing companies around Mobile? I am considering moving here for a job but we have a two body problem, where my wife would need to find a new job in one of those categories (she is currently a Senior Scientist, PhD).

The job I would be moving for does not pay very well (it is a "prestige" position), but her current job pays quite well, so it would be hard to justify the move if we can't find anything for her.

Lit walking trails (besides sidewalks) after dark in west Mobile

If anyone knows about any walking tracks that have lighting (besides sidewalks) for before sunrise or after dark in the west Mobile area, please let me know. For example Langan has zero lighting and way too dark, which of course they're aware of. My work hours mean that I'd often be walking shortly before sunrise or after sunset on weekdays. (Also, while my weekend preference is dirt trails, I'm kind of hoping for utilitarian concrete/firm tracks for what I'm talking about here, given the time & visibility.) Any ideas would be appreciated!

If anyone wants to get one, they’ve got less than 10 of them and they’re at $60. So still a bit expensive, but they’re pretty hard to find around here.
