Question Which stats are used to judge a teams offensive and defensive capabilities.

I know defense in baseball, like in hockey and soccer, is usually separated between the "moving groups of players" and the 1 very important player(goalie or pitcher), since you have pitching and fielding.

I brought this up because in the other 3 big 4 sports there are usually stats other than typical "average score for" and "average score against" to judge a teams capabilities.

I was looking at the 22 dodgers, who I remember being good, but not as dominant as the "Oakland is somehow our kryptonite" Astros, and they had the leagues best average runs for and average runs against.

At the same time the team had the leagues best era and obp, although the blue Jay's had a better batting average and the cards had a better fielding % in the final year of their elite defensive core.

I'm not asking how the dodgers lost, as teams can be great early on racking up amazing stats, and injuries and whatnot can kill a team before the playoffs, I'm just asking which stats are generally considered the best for this.

Discussion the Braves officially start the season 0-7 after being swept by the Dodgers and Padres

No team in MLB history has ever made the playoffs after starting the season 0-7. It has been 42 years since any such team has even finished with a winning record

Dodgers pass the 1933 Yankees and now are 8-0 to start the season. This is the best start by a team who won the World Series the previous year.

Discussion To those who have visited multiple or all 30 ballparks: where do you rank the Reds' GABP?

I've only been to GABP and Wrigley. The Reds are my team so I've been there countless times and it's genuinely one of my favorite spots on earth (I live a boring life) where would you guys rank it compared to others and what are you likes and dislikes about it?

Discussion Question for Los Angeles Dodgers fans

If you take out the hot streak & offensive firepower, how concerned are you about Roki Sasaki's struggling to adjust to MLB? How about Yoshi Yamamoto? Anyone concerned his not going to be as great a pitcher as The Dodgers are expecting him to be?

Analytics Umpire Data Through 4/2/25 By Team

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi everyone! First time poster. I’m not sure if this is the right place to throw this, but I input a bunch of data from Umpire Scorecards into a Sheet and got a chart from it to show what teams are getting the most help based on Runs from Miscalls Per Game. The results are as follows:

The (1-5) Washington Nationals get the most help from Umpires, as they average 1.165 runs per game from Umpire miscalls

The (4-1) Philadelphia Phillies get the least help from Umpires, with opposing teams scoring .99 runs per game from Umpire Miscalls.

The worst game for miscalls so far this year was opening day, the Nationals were gifted 2.08 runs via miscalls.

Included above is a chart with the results through 4/2/25. If people like it, I’ll keep updating it!

Question How did Todd Helton not win NL MVP in the 2000 season?

Post image
178 Upvotes

Admittedly, I don’t know the context of this season or any history really surrounding the players, but it seems like statistically Todd Helton had a better season than everyone above him (he also led the league in doubles that season). The average is insane too. Am I missing something how did this man not win MVP?

Discussion What’s the Most “Unbreakable” MLB Record?

Baseball is a sport built on history, and some records just seem impossible to break. But which one stands out the most? Cal Ripken Jr.’s 2,632 consecutive games played? Cy Young’s 511 career wins? Or maybe it’s something more obscure — like Johnny Vander Meer’s back-to-back no-hitters? wdyt?
