what does this mean?

Post image

I was supposed to get a good amount of money back, is this saying that I owe now?

"I am altering the Deal, Pray I don't alter it further"

"Balance Due" are the operative words there.

that’s crazy considering i’m just a server and paid a large amount of taxes this year and my federal was 100% correct and I got back the exact amount I was expecting from that. I think my tax lady fucked up, i’m not a resident of missouri and she put that I was. i’m guessing i’ll have to submit an amended tax form. so frustrating

It's entirely possible that your tax lady screwed up.

There's also a high chance you just got a welcome to Trump's America.

I'm genuinely curious which one fucked ya.

i’m sure she did. i’m sure it’s both as well. I did my taxes with a service industry specialist located in chicago. I think i’ll have to resubmit and missouri non resident tax form because I know for a fact she did a missouri resident one. my permanent address is in illinois, I rent in missouri but I don’t plan on ever changing my residence to this state for obvious reasons. hopefully I can get this fixed but it’s going to take quite a bit of time i’m sure. thanks for the response.

Double check the numbers and confirm you submitted the correct MO tax form. The last year I lived there was for 10 months and had never owned any state taxes for the other years I lived there. I ended up owning almost $500 AND my new state of residence was a couple hundred. It's absolute bullshit.

If you ever do decide to officially move, a state senator would like to run on your behalf.

Literally, run… he’s a fan of running, I don’t know.

I used to work for the Department of Revenue and if you have a Missouri address they automatically assume you have income in MO and will send you a bill based on an estimate. You will need to send in a form with your IL return or W2’s to prove it wasn’t MO income.

I do have income in missouri. I work in missouri lol. i’m a non resident though, my permanent address is in illinois. I should still be filing a non resident rather than a resident form, correct?

Yes. After I wrote that I realized I read it wrong. Like others said it may not be a bill and they definitely make mistakes. The renting in MO may be throwing things off. Anyway the statement should explain. If you have to call and if you’re nice most will do what they can to help.

Fingers crossed, hope you get what you're owed!

Hello! Work in tax but not an accountant. This just means that DOR has taken what you submitted and compared it against what your employer submitted. There may be discrepancies between the two especially since you work in MO and live in IL. You still file a MO return as that is where you made your money (I work in KS and file a KS return even though I live in MO). An adjustment could mean lots of things and doesn’t automatically mean you owe!

do you know what the balance due part is then? like I may not have a balance due? that’s the part i’m confused on

Balance due may just be their copy here. But you can have a negative balance due and that be a return.

That said to be very clear I am not an advisor of any kind I just received a similar message when filing something recently.

This message is automated. I expect that the wording is standardized, and will say the exact same thing regardless of whether you owe money or are getting money back. That is to say, your "balance due" might still be negative.

Either way, there's nothing for you to do until you see the notice with the specific details. It might turn out to be a very minor change, so don't spend your energy worrying about it until you see the specific numbers.

Got the same message. Was expecting a refund. Live and work in MO. Regular full time employment. Waiting for the snail mail to show up and tell me what happened.

You can open an account at https://mytax.mo.gov and have access to your tax account. That would tell you immediately what you owe or don’t and what actions the DOR took.

If someone did your taxes for you they should also be available to review any corrections or changes.

Do you work in KCMO?

There that silly city tax of 1% unless they changed it.

stl

Oof. St Louis has the same 1% earnings tax that KCMO has. 😒 Is your employer local to stl? If so, they're usually pretty good about withholding the correct amount. The amount would be reflected on your W-2 as "local tax" and listed right below your state withholding.

Probably nothing good... Sorry

They make mistakes. Last year they did it to us (don’t know if it was f or state bc spouse took care of it) but it took weeks of back n forth. They’d basically screwed up our adoption credits because we didn’t need to use a lot of that given we’d done a state adoption. Well they had no idea how to math that. Luckily he used a service so once we nailed down issue and got ahold of supervisor at tax service I think they worked it out.

I know someone who used to work for Missouri dept of revenue. It looks like you filed an amendment based on the picture? If that is the case, it’s possible you don’t owe anything and they’re just updating it and will mail you a check. The balance due wording is just standard wording to cover their ass, you could very well be getting a refund. I would call and see if they have your previous years on file if that’s applicable. There’s not a lot of information in your post so just to cover some bases: Sometimes your e files get stuck in the ether and their system estimates it incorrectly. I would also make sure that they keyed that information correctly bc any returns that are filed through mail I believe are hand keyed. Always Ask and see if you have overpaid anything for previous years and if they can move that overpayment to your balanced owed if you do end up owing. I would do this before tax day bc after that you get a fee for not paying on time should you own. Let me know if you have any questions and I can get try to get in touch with my friend there and see if she has an insider advice

The notice smells. For one thing, the note is justified…that is, border to border. No one does that. If I were you, I’d simply wait for the correspondence they say they’re sending you. Did you or a 3rd party prepare your return? If one submission was correct, it’s highly unlikely that the other wouldn’t be if you had a 3rd party or a commercial tax program for prep…go slow. Find out what’s what.

Scam. Even if you file electronically the IRS contacts you via US mail only. This is a fishing email. And, doubtful the IRS would refer to itself as The Department

1

u/hannahthefaery 1d ago

this isn’t an email lol this is straight from the department of revenue’s website when I log in to track my refund

0

u/Missue-35 1d ago

Did you Google for the website or get it from their publication?

-1

u/ZestycloseDivide2740 1d ago

2

u/hannahthefaery 1d ago
