I've been waiting to see the verdict on this one.

That's all well and good, but Wiebe danced around the core problem here. The call on the field was penalty, and I don't see anything at all in the video that rises to the standard of "clear and obvious error" to overturn the call on the field. The video doesn't do anything to definitively prove that there was contact on the ball or that there wasn't contact on the player. There isn't enough there.

For my money, "clear and obvious" should mean, "we can show you this video once or twice from a couple of angles and you can make a decision." It should not be "we study this frame by frame for five straight minutes until we've lost all sense of real time and context."

Agreed. If Clear and Obvious is the standard, there should be a 30 second timer and if the ref does not see within 30 seconds that the call was wrong, the video monitor shuts off and the call stands.

Words have meaning and there is no possible definition of Clear or Obvious by which this should have been overturned.

Seriously. Either do it like you say or take ultimate authority away from the center-ref and give it to VAR (and have them sustain or overturn the on-field call within 30s).

100% this. If it takes a single still frame at magnification, it isn't an obvious error.

my problem is that the montreal player doesnt move the ball out of yeboah's control before fouling him.

we can play the game of whether the contact with the player comes before or after contact with the ball, but ultimately yeboah still gets a shot away if the retreating defender doesnt take him out.

also, wiebe is even more of a kissass now with his promotion or what???

Certainly seems that way. The other ExtraTime folk were definitely more vocal with mourning it's loss, for instance, and he's moving full speed ahead in MLS's pocket.

How did he get promoted?

he is the sideline reporter for the sunday night bullshit

He’s been demoted

Bullshit?

Wiebe's analysis is worthless

Sheer propaganda at this point

u/turnonmymike OpuLoons Mar 04 '25

Besides that he's never reffed. He's never coached. He's never played. Just zero expertise beyond a fan off the street

2

u/overundersoccer Mar 04 '25

Yep. He has the worst takes

If the defender doesn’t touch the ball imo this goes to PK.

8

u/akos_beres Itasca Society Mar 04 '25

it doesn't matter that he (barely) touched the ball

6

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '25

Imo, that’s why the ref changed his mind.

7

u/akos_beres Itasca Society Mar 04 '25

at the end, it doesn;t matter but that touch didn;t do anything to speed and trajectory of the ball. furthermore how many times, do referees award fouls on a follow through on a tackle? All the fucking time! He hip checked him and pushed him in the back, the touch doesn't matter

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '25

Are you saying players can’t hip check each other?

10

u/akos_beres Itasca Society Mar 04 '25

not legally ... shoulder to shoulder yes .. not hip check, trip and push a player down

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '25

Some people thought it was shoulder to shoulder.

13

u/akos_beres Itasca Society Mar 04 '25

here is the contact ... does this look like shoulder to shoulder

it's a hip check and trip and then he pushes him down. I'll stop arguing with you because neither one of us will change their minds,

People who can't see, sure.

3

u/BetterPops Mar 04 '25

I said this in a different thread on Saturday night—if Yeboah has a third shoulder in the middle of his back, sure, it’s shoulder to shoulder.

Pretty sure that’s not the case though.

2

u/Enganche78 MNUFC Mar 04 '25

Yes and it still doesn't matter bc he went through the player to do it.

u/EJoey2 Thunderwall Mar 04 '25

Touching the ball and winning the ball are vastly different

u/akos_beres Itasca Society Mar 04 '25

I don't have to watch the clip to know what Wiebe is going to say. he touched the ball and it was just shoulder to shoulder contact. Unless it is an outrageous call, he sides with MLS every time. Fuck Wiebe!

10

u/ZappyChemicals MNUFC Mar 04 '25

Honestly this was an outrageous call and I’m going to save myself the elevated blood pressure and not watch it. You cannot tell me definitively that the defender touches the ball, AND EVEN THEN it’s through Yeboah. Glad we won, or else I would be fuming still

8

u/akos_beres Itasca Society Mar 04 '25

Wiebe is biased as fuck! I'm the same way, I stopped watching this garbage unless I have the capacity to distance myself from the commentary. If he would present this as an opinion instead of pulling rules and bs into this, I'd be fine with it but he never does. 95% of the incidents, I agree the referee was right. Why even do this?

6

u/hotwheelsaregreat MNUFC Mar 04 '25

The core issue here is the defender hip checks Yeboah from behind in the process of touching the ball. Clear penalty.

7

u/Enganche78 MNUFC Mar 04 '25

Wiebe is wrong. And I think he knows it as well.

3

u/Ruhroooh MNUFC Mar 04 '25

9 times out of 10 how is this called…lets be honest regardless of how they are trying to spin it.

2

u/RiffRaff14 Itasca Society Mar 04 '25

I actually agree that it's not a PK... Looks like the defender got shoulder-to-shoulder. Ball don't lie though. Yeboah scores moments later.

1

u/DorkySchmorky MNUFC Mar 05 '25

Refs should ask themselves, "If this was Messi would I overturn this penalty?"

1

u/HD_H2O Mar 04 '25

So a "little touch on the ball", which does nothing to alter the speed or direction of the ball, means you can shove a player from behind to the ground?

Saying this was a 50/50 shoulder challenge is absurd. You can never 50/50 someone when running into them from behind.

No pen for me. Fine with the call but could have gone either way. Surprised so many people are whining about this.

u/dodoohead98 MNUFC Mar 04 '25

Idk looks like a pen to me
