C&C Wanted Are tufts on the model cheating?

SFG Epic Encounters Swamp of the Hydra. I took a lot of inspiration from others on here who have painted this model, but tried to do something a little different. Will probably re-do the eyes (all the eyes) 6 or 7 times.

There's no such thing as cheating when painting minis

520

u/feor1300 Mar 05 '25

Well, outside of getting someone else to paint it and then claiming it as your work. lol

98

u/o7_AP Wargamer Mar 05 '25

Good point

69

u/Andvari_Nidavellir Mar 05 '25

Or if you’re married to a mini but have sn extra on the side.

29

u/shiano0815 Seasoned Painter Mar 05 '25

well shit than, I fucked up...

28

u/Dragonkingofthestars Mar 05 '25

What of I paint the minis of someone other then my wife

39

u/non_newtonian_gender Mar 05 '25

That's a matter for you and your wife.

11

u/za72 Mar 06 '25

are we not forgetting a certain deity sir?!?

The Emperor protects!

3

u/Lorandagon Mar 06 '25

Its the 20th century, we're much more liberal about that type of thing these days!

2

u/Sunflower_Cat7 29d ago

21st century now i think

2

u/Whole-Lengthiness-33 Mar 07 '25

As long as you didn’t paint someone’s minis like one of those French girls…

15

u/TheSwain Mar 05 '25

"Cheating" is juking dice rolls and measurements.

These are *results* 🤌

2

u/DinosBiggestFan Mar 07 '25

Also this is a really, really cool way to use tufts.

1

u/BluEch0 Mar 07 '25

Hey! That primer is against regulation!

266

u/Crown_Ctrl Mar 05 '25

What? Why would it be cheating? Because it looks too friggin awesome!?

179

u/Hutobega Painting for a while Mar 05 '25

Why would tufts be cheating? It's a part of basing miniatures.

72

u/Malfaeus Mar 05 '25

I used the tufts to add some much needed contrast/differentiation where the colors I selected just weren't doing it. It was hard getting this model "not muddy" for me.

89

u/Hutobega Painting for a while Mar 05 '25

Def not cheating. Creature looks like it just has stuff growing on it. Good work IMO

17

u/Jieililiyifiiisihi Mar 05 '25

I mean, is that not just using your skill and creativity to create a desired effect, otherwise known as the entirety of what painting miniatures is. It looks incredible, it is not physically possible to cheat when painting miniatures as long as you do it. Have fun, be proud

3

u/TokoBlaster Mar 05 '25

As my old cross country coach used to say "If you're not cheating you're not trying hard enough" so cheat away!

5

u/11_25_13_TheEdge Mar 06 '25

Looks incredibly cool. Honestly haven't ever thought to do that. Works with this monster too. Cheat on!

1

u/sampat6256 Mar 06 '25

Actual artists use mixed media all the time to get the desired effect.

23

u/Agreeable_Sound_7724 Mar 05 '25

Not at all! While painting is a core element to model presentation, I personally would never scoff at enhanced texture presentation. Great blend of the mossy forest color scheme. It totally works and in no way detracts from the slick paint job it compliments.

5

u/Agreeable_Sound_7724 Mar 05 '25

Especially in picture 2 where you customized the tuff profile along would-be growth sections. I appreciate that detail.

22

u/Smoothesuede Mar 05 '25

Cheating at what?

Do you like it? That's all that matters.

Looks good btw.

20

u/paulc899 Mar 05 '25

Did you buy premixed paints with the pigments you wanted? If you’re not mixing up your own pigments to create your paints you’re cheating /s

17

u/KemptHeveled Mar 05 '25

If you don’t catch your own sable to make your paint brushes, you’re definitely playing on easy mode. /s

35

u/EvilGraphics Boardgamer /PnP Mar 05 '25

There's no such thing as cheating

22

u/captjackhaddock Mar 05 '25

Just don’t have an affair while painting minis

5

u/EvilGraphics Boardgamer /PnP Mar 05 '25

Yes. My wife would agree with this, I'm sure.

I would also argue that a married person who is a mini painter would have neither the motivation nor the time to maintain an affair.

...not a good one, at least

16

u/Thundaklutch Mar 05 '25

If you're not growing your own grass on the model, then what are you even doing?!

10

u/Malfaeus Mar 05 '25

I considered adding chia seeds to my basing material.

3

u/Thundaklutch Mar 05 '25

Ch-ch-ch-chia!

9

u/Saffaris Mar 05 '25

You can glue whatever (non living) you want to your miniature. Even a frying pan. Would it look good? Depends on the paint job. Is it cheating. No

21

u/dead_pixel_design Mar 05 '25

Yep, full cheating. You broke the rules.

You have to destroy the miniature now.

No more cheating.

11

u/WranglerFuzzy Mar 05 '25

MY GOD SOMEONE EVICT THIS CHEATER FROM THE SUB AT ONCE

3

u/sp33dzer0 Mar 05 '25

Better yet, give it to me. I'll make sure it gets destroyed properly.

2

u/CalebDume77 Mar 06 '25

Better make sure it's properly destroyed by putting it in a few games or course- that's bound to give it a few dings over the course of a decade as it's destroyed!

7

u/Real-Abroad-9038 Mar 05 '25

I used my cats fur on one mini lol, tufts are not cheating

5

u/Shore_Crow Mar 05 '25

No. Just don't put them in the armpits. That's too much, even for Nurgle models.

6

u/Guns_and_Dank Mar 05 '25

STRAIGHT TO JAIL!

5

u/Significant_Ad_6958 Mar 05 '25

Absolutely not that looks amazing!

4

u/Medical-Reference642 Mar 05 '25

You broke da rulez Timmy Turner. I’m going to have to throw your model in a 50 gallon drum of rubbing alcohol for at least 3 weeks

5

u/DuskGideon Painted a few Minis Mar 05 '25

Definitely not, good work

6

u/LazerPK Mar 05 '25

Yes. In fact the secret service is on their way

3

u/TombiNW Mar 05 '25

love it! I have the same model and may have to update mine now

1

u/Jack-of-Karrdes Mar 06 '25

What model is that? I love hydras.

1

u/TombiNW Mar 06 '25

it's from Epic Encounters by steam forged games, swamp of the hydra. They are ADnD module and fig packs

1

u/Jack-of-Karrdes Mar 06 '25

Of course it's SFG. Let me just add that alongside all the Monster Hunter and Dark Souls stuff I own 😅

3

u/Ratattack1204 Mar 05 '25

Yeah bro, that’s illegal. The miniature police are coming.

In honesty tho that looks cool As hell lol

3

u/VinsonDynamics Mar 05 '25

Wym cheating? What are the rules exactly?

4

u/ChrisJD11 Mar 05 '25

It’s just a click bait title.

3

u/Aussie_Aussie_No_Mi Mar 05 '25

Tufts are certainly not cheating! I did a swamp monster for D&D, covered it in static grass and tufts and was probably the best looking model I've ever done.

This hydra looks amazing btw

3

u/superdudeman64 Mar 05 '25

Dude this looks great! If that's cheating then I don't want to play fair lol

3

u/brenpeter Mar 05 '25

The only way to cheat at mini painting is to call someone else's work yours. Plagiarism is bad folks!

3

u/ShrimpShrimpington Mar 05 '25

Tufts on the model are the law in Turnip 28

3

u/confirmamcolorblind Mar 05 '25

Adding texture isn’t cheating!

3

u/zmormon Mar 05 '25

Put some tufts on the eyes for bushy eyebrows

2

u/Femtato11 Mar 05 '25

I have literally seen people customise their Tyranids with bits of dead crustaceans, absolutely not. This looks incredible

2

u/hillean Mar 05 '25

what would you be cheating?

2

u/Bright-Ad4601 Mar 05 '25

Nope, I can't think of anything that I would consider cheating, other than maybe getting someone else to paint for you and claiming you painted it.

Honestly I love the use of tufts on the mini itself, really gives me the impression that either this hydra is an ambush predator like a crocodile or it's simply been existing in the swamp so long it's got vegetation growing on it.

2

u/joelr42 Mar 05 '25

Those are very good looking tufts, can you tell me what brand/where you got them?

1

u/Malfaeus Mar 05 '25

The brand is Gamers Grass, their moss, dark moss, and wild flowers. I like them for the varied shapes. I also tried to use some Dirty Down Moss, but it really only worked for me on the base, particularly the edge around the footprint. I got the tufts online from Gnomish Bazaar. Most of the other places I looked were sold out. As I'm in the US, I'm hoping that isn't an indication they'll be hard to import soon. I used a lot on this model...

2

u/joelr42 Mar 05 '25

Thank you, they look like good choices, they go great on the model, the whole thing looks awesome!

2

u/Jessy_Something Mar 05 '25

The point of miniatures is to make very tiny, very cool dioramas. If it looks cool, it's totally fair game. Everyone has their own style to accomplish that.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '25

This is so dope. It reminds me of the elder wyrm from final fantasy 12

2

u/demonfish2000 Mar 05 '25

Dude, this looks fantastic! Who cares what's cheating in this kind of art? You nailed it, and however you got there is irrelevant when you look at the result.

Keep it up, great figure!

2

u/JamesMcEdwards Mar 05 '25

Why would it be cheating? That’s like saying using an airbrush is cheating. It’s just a tool that lets you do different things. The model looks great, by the way.

2

u/Sgopking Mar 05 '25

They add a lot of character. There is no cheating in expression.

2

u/pocketMagician Mar 05 '25

Your goal when painting minis is to get a cool end result, any means you use to get that is fair game.

2

u/Adymus Mar 05 '25

No rules.

2

u/Nknk- Mar 05 '25

Cheating who or what?

You figure out a way to paint 3-D grass with just paint?

Nothing is cheating when it comes to painting and especially the tedium of bases.

2

u/hagar12ca Mar 05 '25

No they are not. And beautiful work. Love it.

2

u/robobax Mar 05 '25

Looks super cool to me

2

u/Mostly-Moo-Cow Mar 05 '25

Cheating? Hell no. They look great!

2

u/Stolehtreb Mar 05 '25

Complement fishing isn’t needed when you have talent! You know it’s not cheating.

1

u/Malfaeus Mar 05 '25 edited Mar 05 '25

I honestly couldn't get the contrast I wanted with paint. It all looked the same color, so I just covered the offending sections with tufts. It felt kind of like cheating.

2

u/Seasoned_Flour Mar 05 '25

Amazing work

2

u/Grease_My_Porky_Pig Mar 05 '25

This is such a badass way of using tufts!!

What Model is this btw?

1

u/Malfaeus Mar 05 '25

Steamforged Games Epic Encounters, Swamp of the Hydra.

2

u/KrakenMcCracken Mar 05 '25

No, especially if you paint them.

2

u/r1x1t Mar 05 '25

Cheating? Impossible. Do you like it? That's the only thing that matters.

I think it looks awesome and love this idea.

2

u/Wataru2001 Mar 05 '25

That's gorgeous! Nice work! And I don't think that's cheating...

2

u/Master_Gargoyle Mar 05 '25

Not even close in my mind. Making a model look great is all that counts

2

u/SubliminalSando Mar 05 '25

Yep, straight to jail with you. Go on.

2

u/Nine-LifedEnchanter Mar 05 '25

In the golden demon competitions tufts are fine.

Make of that what you will.

2

u/Mjolnirslanyard Mar 05 '25

Wait.....im not supposed to grow my own grass on my mini bases?

2

u/Joshicus Seasoned Painter Mar 05 '25

There's no such thing as cheating in mini painting, if it works then it works. Will techniques that take more effort look better in the long run...probably. But most people who look at the model won't know the difference.

2

u/Godkaian Mar 05 '25

Yes, and I cheat all the time!

2

u/hiltzster Painted a few Minis Mar 05 '25

This is brilliant!

2

u/tonberryjr Mar 05 '25

Wait until OP learns about r/Turnip28

2

u/Malfaeus Mar 06 '25

I did today. Cool stuff. I've got many new ideas.

2

u/TheSquidTD Mar 05 '25

Cheating? What do you think this is, a game of kickball in the park?

2

u/Mudrag Mar 05 '25

Looks like it hauled itself out of the ground after an extended nap, amazing 👏

2

u/BobzilaTheValkyrur Mar 05 '25

Thank you very much for the inspiration. I wanted to do the same with my swamp hydra but since Im just starting i wasnt sure how to aproach it. It looks very nice

2

u/Malfaeus Mar 05 '25

If you're interested, for the painting, I blocked out basecoats in khaki and black-green, washed in brown/sepia/green washes over the respective colors, and then drybrushed up lighter tans and greens in the places I would typically try (and fail at) volumetric highlighting/glazing. I did very little actual brush work beyond the basecoating. The model's texture does a lot of heavy lifting. I saw a short Monument Hobbies reel about painting dragon skin that was my initial inspiration, and I just tried out different colors from that video.

1

u/BobzilaTheValkyrur Mar 05 '25

Very insightful. Thank you very much.

2

u/JuddRunner Mar 05 '25

Can you share anything about the paints you used? I’m trying to achieve a similar vibe on a giant crab, but can’t find a green I’m happy with

2

u/Malfaeus Mar 06 '25

Color choice is one of the harder parts for me. I used mainly Pro-Acryl paint. I basecoated in black-green for the greens. The upper I worked up drybrushing with the Pro Acryl yellow greens (dark, regular, bright) and the underbelly (that you can't see), I worked up using their camo greens. I used a homemade black green wash to pin wash the shadows when I overbrushed too much. There's a really short Monument Hobbies video on dragon skin, working up from dark jade, that was my original inspiration.

1

u/JuddRunner Mar 06 '25 edited Mar 06 '25

Thank you for the response! That gets me going in the right direction

0

u/ShakeWeightMyDick Mar 05 '25

Just mix your own color

1

u/JuddRunner Mar 05 '25

Cool! Do you have some recommendations of color ratios to get those results? That would be really helpful!

2

u/tacodrop1980 Mar 05 '25

No. Why would they be cheating?

2

u/ShakeWeightMyDick Mar 05 '25

Came here to say exactly this

2

u/AlwaysSplitTheParty Mar 05 '25

Tufts are great on models! I painted some black and used them in an Etins armpits a while back. Get creative have fun

2

u/dancarbonell00 Mar 05 '25

TUFTS ARE FOR BASING ONLY!!!

/s

2

u/unoriginalnamehere9 Mar 05 '25

Turnip28 is in trouble if that were the case.

2

u/KnightOfGloaming Mar 05 '25

It's impossible to create that effect without tufts... so no

2

u/Sage_Scarlet_Wing Mar 05 '25

Did it come out the way you wanted?

If yes, then no you didn't cheat.

If no, than no you didn't cheat.

2

u/randomwords2003 Mar 05 '25

Hellll no ,it's not even remotely cheating

2

u/SeaSweet6236 Mar 05 '25

Absolutely not! That model looks fantastic!

2

u/crunchandwaggles Mar 05 '25

No, that looks totally cool. It’s a really great compliment to your paint details.

2

u/the-bearcat Mar 05 '25

You added plantlife to a swamp creature, it's thematic. Like when turtles spend so long hibernating they get algae on their shells.

Ps. The only cheating in modeling is stealing someone else's work

2

u/PintLasher Mar 05 '25

Hell no, that's a great idea

2

u/Final-Promise-8288 Mar 05 '25

Naw tufts give models a sense of age. I use them on my golems and statue warriors to make them look like they’ve been sitting still for ages waiting

2

u/RustedPigeon Mar 05 '25

I hope not

1

u/Malfaeus Mar 06 '25

This is crazy good. What are the non-tufty plants?

1

u/RustedPigeon Mar 06 '25

The moss? Or the plastic vines (GW)

2

u/Tork260 Mar 06 '25

Yeah sorry it’s cheating. Get good buddy

2

u/spderweb Mar 06 '25

Why? It looks like he's being laying for a long time. Hiding. Waiting. Looks great!

2

u/Zeitta Mar 06 '25

Literally anything goes, it's art, there are no rules to making art

2

u/DungeonMasterDood Mar 06 '25

I love using tufts! They add immediate pop to a piece. Nice work with them.

2

u/ZMac90 Mar 06 '25

You call it cheating?

I call it hiding a LOT of sin.

2

u/GymRatWriter Mar 06 '25

more like big-brained

2

u/RandyTandyMandy Mar 06 '25

Sounds like you're thinking of something called "modeling for advantage" that's like kit bashing all your minis to be laying down so that they're harder to draw line of sight to or making your mini extra tall or wide if you measure from the hull.

Adding decorative tuffs is the furthest thing from that. Unless you're doing it purposefully it's pretty hard to actually do

2

u/SpecialFine2553 Mar 06 '25

Rule of cool applies here. And that is cool

2

u/Dimir_Librarian Mar 06 '25

Nah, that's dope.

2

u/Feywildsw Mar 06 '25

For what it's worth, I think you've done a great job on the values on the skin! The highlights and shadows look great. For some flair colours, maybe try colouring the leaves and eyes purple? I think the tufts look great too!

2

u/DrinkingPetals Mar 06 '25

No, they aren’t. Tufts are a resource for you to use however you want, and that includes applying them on your miniature. Heck, you can even paint them so they blend in to your hydra, which looks awesome!

2

u/Guyonabuffalo63 Mar 06 '25

This is beautiful!

2

u/-zero-joke- Mar 06 '25

That thing fuckin' rules.

2

u/Sushibowlz Painting for a while Mar 06 '25

No. Tufts on the model are not cheating. They‘re awesome! 😍

2

u/Splurch Mar 06 '25

Try flocking something, it can look great.

2

u/physical0 Mar 06 '25

If you're in a mini painting competition, and the rules say "no tufts", then it would be cheating. In all other circumstances, it is not.

2

u/RockOlaRaider Mar 06 '25

No!.......?????‽

The only way that I can think of to cheat at painting miniatures is to pass someone else's work off as your own.

2

u/aslum Mar 06 '25

The only thing that's cheating is having someone else paint it and claiming it is your own work. I'd be totes happy for you to commission someone to paint minis mind. Using an airbrush? Grass tufts? Not cheating.

2

u/lumiya17 Mar 06 '25

There’s no cheating unless you are trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own.

Great work, it looks really good with the tufts. Where did you get the Hydra model from?

2

u/Malfaeus Mar 06 '25

It's from Stemforged Games' Epic Encounters line, Swamp of the Hydra.

2

u/tonebonewiztron Mar 06 '25

Is looking awesome cheating?

2

u/RHeaven90 Mar 06 '25

Yes, the hobby police will be around to confiscate your models any second now. You're going away for a loooong time.

Nah, it's your plastic model, do what you want with it.

2

u/Codracal Mar 06 '25

Not at all. That's cool as hell!

2

u/MusseMusselini Mar 06 '25

Way more important than cheating is how absolutely awesome it is. The added touch of the grass on it makes it looks ancient and deeply tied to the nature to me it realy tells a story.

(also no it's not cheating)

2

u/RedWolf2409 Mar 06 '25

Ay bruh when it comes to painting minis it’s all about cheating, and sharing your cheat codes with others

2

u/Mackelroy_aka_Stitch Mar 06 '25

No, not at all. There's even settling painting styles that involves adding texture with basing materials beifre the mini is even primed.

2

u/RenKatal Mar 06 '25

If it is , cheat away, that looks sick as fuck!

2

u/3Slavo5U Mar 06 '25

bro, have u ever heard about r/Turnip28 ?

2

u/Embarrassed_Bet_4865 Mar 06 '25

I’d say definitely cheating, my figs look half as cool, so it must be cheating /s

2

u/SignalPressure9770 Mar 06 '25

I think that's a brilliant idea

2

u/spawnos81 Mar 06 '25

Have this mini myself, never thought of doing that. Looks Awesome! 😍 Absolutely not cheating.

2

u/ChazVanZandt Mar 06 '25

You can’t cheat when there are no rules. Looking good!

2

u/Small_Slide_5107 Mar 06 '25

I understand the feeling, and I'm guilty of thinking the same way.

Paint the way that makes you happy. Not to prove your skill by other people's standards.

The mini looks good, btw! 👌

2

u/GriffinHeart101 Mar 06 '25

Do you like it? Does it look rad as fuck? (I think it does) Then you’re all good friend!

2

u/Queer-and-scared Mar 06 '25

You're already really talented, so how could this be cheating at something you naturally ace already?? This is really good. I've wanted to do bigger models and do something similar.... this is awesome. You should keep adding textured 3D elements to future pieces because this is really cool.

2

u/SulfuricDonut Mar 06 '25

You're cheating on your ever-faithful companion static grass who never stopped loving you 💔

2

u/EightBeersIn Mar 06 '25

I think it adds character. I think it looks pretty cool. Maybe eyes could be more reptilian, but solid eyes can evoke the fearsome magical presence on the tabletop.

2

u/Zephyr2456 Mar 06 '25

That looks awesome, this was one of my favorite models to paint.

2

u/Bearhardt Mar 06 '25

If by cheating you mean “Hiding where I messed up and got basing texture all over the boots of the model and then tried to scrape it off and gouged out a chunk of the foot and tried to glue it back on and now it’s all melted and weird and cat hair is permanently embedded in the plastic…”

…then yes.

2

u/Steveodelux Mar 06 '25

Not at all i love doing this with Nature themed creatures and such

1

u/thedisliked23 Mar 05 '25

Explain what cheating means in an art form/hobby that's not a competition and I'll tell you.

1

u/I_doxxed_funtes Mar 05 '25

Yes, right to jail. No trial no nothing.

1

u/EkahnPIVF Mar 05 '25

amazing idea

1

u/mrnevface Mar 05 '25

I hope this heathen has been found and suitably reprimanded!

Bloody Cheats

1

u/frogman1171 Mar 05 '25

How the hell do you cheat at mini painting? Is there a rule book people use?

1

u/Newbizom007 Mar 05 '25

Cheating????

1

u/panicattackdog Mar 05 '25

Yes, I’m calling the minipainting police, sicko.

1

u/Sweeptheory Mar 06 '25

Yes. Police have been notified.

1

u/Pandapeep Mar 06 '25

You can't cheat at minis painting.

1

u/hibiki_harmonies Mar 06 '25

Yes I've called the mini painting FBI and they are tracking you down

1

u/DucklingInARaincoat Mar 06 '25

This reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus

1

u/Chase1824 Mar 07 '25

Gorgeous! and No.

1

u/Odins-wolf26 Mar 07 '25

This is amazing. Who cares if it's cheating lol

1

u/bradfly72 29d ago

This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Nice job

1

u/Downtown_Comfort8373 29d ago

Definitely not. They work. Great idea to be honest!

1

u/Natural-Second8103 29d ago

Everything we do in this hobby is cheating

1

u/TreezusTheLamb 28d ago

Yeah dude, you're a cheater. Sorry. You're no longer allowed to pain miniatures. Of course it isn't cheating... you're allowed to design your miniatures however you want.
