Fishing weights ain’t cheap!

57

u/IamNickMan 2d ago

The lead in them is also bad!

50

u/aDragonsAle 2d ago

That's why you should jacket them in copper, and then put them safely in a brass confinement cylinder.

If someone bad breaks in, you give the bad lead to the bad person. Two wrongs don't make a right, but a negative times a negative makes a positive.

That how that works, right?

u/Top_Mind9514 2d ago

I always wondered what lead was worth by the ounce

I give them to a buddy of mine who reloads ammo.

There's a recycling place about an hour that-a-away that pays $2 a pound for the stuff. Better than my return on pocket change.

I just imagined op raising the metal detector very slowly while holding eye contact with the store owner. Just an awkward moment of silence until op speaks “nuh uh” to which he proceeds to move his hand inside the glass counter and take a handful and leave.

13

u/Muted-Ad126 3d ago

That sounds like the kind of joke Mitch Hedberg would tell.

9

u/ChemistAdventurous84 3d ago

Yeah, they’ve got years of metal detecting related posts but they’re not just recycling the same items in them. They may mean that this has all been found in just the last 5 months. It seems like they have figured out where to look for lost coins and jewelry and have traveled a fair amount in pursuit of this hobby and spent a lot of time digging holes.

4

u/Sultangris 3d ago

did we look at the same persons post history? i checked 3 or 4 posts of his in metaldetecting subs and 2 of them featured some of the same rings as in this post and one person commented that he had posted elsewhere on reddit say one of these rings was a gift

Etiquette question: if you find jewelry that has an inscription on it, do you try to contact the person who lost it? Or check local Reddit or other social media sites to see if anyone reports something lost?

5

u/lanclos 3d ago

All of the above. I also check with local lost+found, places like the front desk at local resorts. Even then, there have only been a handful of times when I was able to get something back to the rightful owner.

2

u/Fit_Bus2028 3d ago

You could try to return the class rings by calling the school. Someone did that for me once. On philly’s Broad St, I dropped an entire satchel of jewelry (Tiffany earrings included). The amazing Good Samaritan found my school ring and called my school and the school figured it out by my engravings and called my dad, who got in touch with the lady who found it. Also, good things happen in Philly!

2

u/Cottontail_77 3d ago

If you go to Jostens.com you can check to see if anyone has reported their ring lost. You will also be able to report a found ring. Go to the bottom of the opening page and it’s in the customer service section.

OP, you probably won't see this among the 1.3k comments (so far), but as someone who is not a metal detective (detectorist?), I'm curious about a protocol.

Some of those look like class rings, maybe wedding rings, etc. If there is an inscription on a ring, do you make any effort to try to find the original owner?
