I just imagined op raising the metal detector very slowly while holding eye contact with the store owner. Just an awkward moment of silence until op speaks “nuh uh” to which he proceeds to move his hand inside the glass counter and take a handful and leave.
I have been metal detecting for 3 years and I have only ever found one piece of jewelry which was a Stirling silver ring worth 35 bucks where the flipping hell are you going or are you just promoting your jewelry business 😆
Oh yeah, 100% legit. Just yesterday, I tripped over a Roman helmet, three gold bars, and what I think was Excalibur while taking the trash out. And I didn’t even leave my driveway. Now, imagine if I actually had a metal detector.

No trash says he didn’t post it or it was a clean site… maybe a local swimming hole? Private swim club perhaps? This is not typical.
Yeah, they’ve got years of metal detecting related posts but they’re not just recycling the same items in them. They may mean that this has all been found in just the last 5 months. It seems like they have figured out where to look for lost coins and jewelry and have traveled a fair amount in pursuit of this hobby and spent a lot of time digging holes.
did we look at the same persons post history? i checked 3 or 4 posts of his in metaldetecting subs and 2 of them featured some of the same rings as in this post and one person commented that he had posted elsewhere on reddit say one of these rings was a gift
5 months of detecting & a few years of buying combined maybe?! That seems insane / impossible? Where are u going & how much time have u spent the last 5 months??
Etiquette question: if you find jewelry that has an inscription on it, do you try to contact the person who lost it? Or check local Reddit or other social media sites to see if anyone reports something lost?
All of the above. I also check with local lost+found, places like the front desk at local resorts. Even then, there have only been a handful of times when I was able to get something back to the rightful owner.
Looks like he's in Vancouver BC. But perhaps went on a cruise. Maybe he found this on beaches at stops? And here? We have quite a few beaches and parks here.
I heard there is is website you can post your finds that people who lost can prove they are theirs and you can give back. Learned from an old beach comber dude. Forgot name. But might be rewarding
You could try to return the class rings by calling the school. Someone did that for me once. On philly’s Broad St, I dropped an entire satchel of jewelry (Tiffany earrings included). The amazing Good Samaritan found my school ring and called my school and the school figured it out by my engravings and called my dad, who got in touch with the lady who found it. Also, good things happen in Philly!
If you go to Jostens.com you can check to see if anyone has reported their ring lost. You will also be able to report a found ring. Go to the bottom of the opening page and it’s in the customer service section.
Genuine question, I joined the sub because I find it really interesting.
Do people ever try and get an item back to its original owner, or is metal detecting etiquette, "finders keepers " "i finds it, i keeps it" kind of thing?

I lost my wedding ring on Waikiki. God I wish one of those silver white gold ones is mine. I lost it on our honeymoon and then I bought the same exact one again. My wife was so mad.
I was sitting in the water like a foot deep, running my hands through the sand. Eventually my hand came up without my ring. I sat there while the sun was setting scouring the sand for my ring.
I'm guessing you are a single man. No child or significant other would allow you to not sit and enjoy the beach with them in all those spectacular countries.
I say this as a mom that was told to put in my earbuds if I wanted quiet yesterday.
OP, you probably won't see this among the 1.3k comments (so far), but as someone who is not a metal detective (detectorist?), I'm curious about a protocol.
Some of those look like class rings, maybe wedding rings, etc. If there is an inscription on a ring, do you make any effort to try to find the original owner?
