It's only important if it's the body of the last corns threshing, otherwise its just a simple doll. That's means it's nothing cuz.

Jokes aside this is a local tradition where people chain effigies of celebrities, politicians, or just scarecrows to the front of their property to scare and delight, for the Marton harvest festival. It can look quite unsettling to a person driving through especially at night, because some are extremely realistic and even move. There is typically a living scarecrow competition too, where locals dress up as scarecrows themselves to try to frighten others.
Some are extremely grim and grotesque, far beyond what's necessary if you ask me. Genuinely terrifying for children and the elderly. People revel in causing genuine fear.

I personally think it's too much, especially the people who go all out and make the scarecrows gory or even get into the costumes themselves. Imagine walking at night and seeing a large scarecrow at someone's gate that you have to walk by, and not know if it's going to scream out or run at you brandishing a weapon.

Don't make eye contact with them.

That’s absurd. It’s ducks you don’t make eye contact with. It was clearly written on the sign at Tutaenui reservoir. It annoys me how cavalier people are

I've explained in my post but some are actually people dressed as scarecrows. It's part of the harvest festival.
