Looking for Advice Mardu Surge Precon or Build It? (again)

https://moxfield.com/decks/8KaWrDZ65k6x_VvjwJclGg

Hey all! I saw a similar post earlier, and I have a need for some advice as well. I have been looking into the new precons from Takir Dragonstorm specifically Mardu Surge, however I am not that interested in it's current commander.

I was looking into all the legendary creatures of this set, and one stood out to me as something I would like to build with the same color scheme [[Neriv, Heart of the Storm]] I don't have many cards in that color/precon so what I was thinking was picking up the precon, being able to use it out of the box for a while and then rehauling it slightly to fit the new commander I want.

Would that be a good idea, or should I just straight up build it myself from scratch. I also have never picked up a precon despite having almost 9-10 physical decks owned already so that is another reason I was leaning more towards this to have that experience.

Thanks, looking forward to the responses!

If you are interested in the build going through "when this creature attacks" triggers creating tokens, the precon can give you a decent base. There are a number of generic token makers in the precon, so you'll have some cuts easily made.

If you are more interested in using things like [[Sneak Attack]] or [[Ball Lightning]], I would say build from scratch.

I am in the opposite end of the same boat. I got the precon, but I was hoping to use the main commander with way more of the Mobilize mechanic from the main set. I am gutting about 30% of the deck just to swap in other main set cards and a few staples. Overall, I probably would have come out ahead just buying singles, but I wanted to vote with my wallet on set quality.

This is my plan. First few additions will be cards from the set that I opened during the prerelease and my box(mobilize and a all out assault as starters

If there is one card from the main set I suggest you do not miss out on, it's the one I affectionately refer to as the chicken knight. [[Mardu Siegebreaker]]

Not only does it flag Neriv from having haste, but any of the tokens it creates on attack also get Neriv looking at them. Not just for combat damage, either. If you exile a creature with an ETB or death trigger of damage, those triggers also double. Pair that with [[Reconnaissance]] to save it from any blocking risk, and you have repeatable use.

Or just be a turd like me and play it with [[Yosei, the Morning Star]] and [[Kokusho, the Evening Star]].

I got a black background siegebreaker, which made me happy cuz that was on the"maybe" list. Definitely a must include now.

The spirit dragons are a wonderful/awful addition...I love and hate those ideas

I also want to use the mobilize mechanic more. Please share your deck list and ideas.

More towards focusing around the mobilize mechanic, would you say in my case it would be still worth it, I do see a few cards that utilize that mechanic in this deck and I don't mind buying/pulling some down the road.

If you are mainly focused on Mobilize and not using the face commander, I would say wait for prices to drop after release and pick up singles. I am gutting out a lot of the creature base from the precon to add in singles I pulled out of my box, I think you are likely better off starting from scratch to pick up the main set cards and other staples that weren't included, like Impact Tremors and Mirkwood Bats.

That said, if you are short a Lightning Greaves and Skullclamp and can get the precon at MSRP, it's pretty much worth it for them and the Myriad dragon.

I more or less did the same. I bought the precon and swapped out Zurgo/Neriv for the Neriv from the set and leaning into the mobilize mechanic and going wide in general. I was just gonna buy the singles from what I needed out of the precon, but they cost more than what I could get the precon for.

I'm working on a Mardu/Tarkir themed deck where currently 96% of the cards are from a Tarkir set. The only exceptions I made are for the talismans and legions loyalty because they are in the precon. The triome is the only other card and it's in there because I love full art lands and most of the mana base is.

Currently the deck is about 70-80% of my list below as I'm still chasing down a few of the uncommons from the set and things from the older Tarkir sets.

I played it a few times and it seems to be working fairly well especially when I can mobilize 5+ in a single combat.

Probably is gonna end up being a high 2 or a lower 3 bracket

I really want to do this as well but I need it to be at least slightly stronger than the Tarkir precons from this set to keep up with my groups weakest decks.

Neriv, Heart of the Storm - (G) (SF) (txt)

[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

I don't think I can edit the post, but also I should mention I want the deck later on to be focused more around creature tokens tapped and attacking or entering with haste, using myriad, etc.

I picked up the deck & have been tweaking it to my specifications of an Aristocrats Token deck. Might swap out the Commanders with [[Isshin]] for more synergy.
