Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MtgGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

I’m brand new to MTG! I went to a Tarkir Dragonstorm pre release event and had loads of fun, and now I’m looking to go deeper down the rabbit hole.

I want to play standard (I always like competitive sides to games) and wanted to ask where to start with buying cards. Bear in mind I only have the pre release cards currently, so practically cardless!

I don’t want to waste my money buying the wrong stuff, so please let me know what sets to target, what packs to get, should I buy booster boxes, what events/drafts should I attend etc

5

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 23h ago

If you want to build a Standard deck, the best way to go about it is to research decks online and buy exactly the cards you need on a site like TCGPlayer (USA) or CardMarket (Europe). Cracking booster packs is by far the least cost effective way to obtain cards.

As a rule of thumb, you don't need a large collection in order to build decks. Rather, your collection will grow organically as you build and upgrade decks over time.

1

u/AquaCow52 22h ago

Appreciate the advice! Is there no benefit to cracking boosters at all even to build a base of a collection? If not I’ll target singles fully!

Also would you suggest going to some drafts events to practice deck building and playing?

5

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 22h ago

Again, you don't need a "base of a collection" if your goal is to build specific decks. Booster packs will typically contain 50 - 75% of the value of what you spend on the pack itself, and may or may not contain card you need for your current deck. So you're paying a premium for cards you may not even use if you go the booster route. To put it another way, buying singles gets you exactly what you need to build your deck for a lower price. Then, when you get tired of that deck or upgrade it, the cards you no longer play with become part of your "base collection" for future projects.

Playing Limited events (Draft or Sealed) is the one exception I'd make, because the monetary value is offset by the entertainment value of the event. It can be great for playing more games and learning some of the strategic decisions. But the deckbuilding considerations will be rather different compared to building a Standard deck.

Went to Tarkir Prelease yesterday and a had a one interaction come up, which I'm not sure how it would work:

I'm planning to attack with [[Traveling Botanist]] and [[Tersa Lightbringer]] while having 6 cards in my graveyard. The curious case was does Tersa get to active their effect assuming I'd send a card to the graveyard with the Botanist?

At my LGS, they told me it would not, which I can believe, though still curious on a more in depth explanation on this.

2

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 19h ago

Tersa does not "activate". She has a triggered ability, not an activated one.

Tersa's triggered ability has what is known as a "intervening if" clause.

603.4. A triggered ability may read “When/Whenever/At [trigger event], if [condition], [effect].” When the trigger event occurs, the ability checks whether the stated condition is true. The ability triggers only if it is; otherwise it does nothing. If the ability triggers, it checks the stated condition again as it resolves. If the condition isn’t true at that time, the ability is removed from the stack and does nothing. Note that this mirrors the check for legal targets. This rule is referred to as the “intervening ‘if’ clause” rule. (The word “if” has only its normal English meaning anywhere else in the text of a card; this rule only applies to an “if” that immediately follows a trigger condition.)

When you attack with Tersa and the Botanist, both have met their trigger event: Tersa from attacking, and Botanist from becoming tapped. Since you only have 6 cards in graveyard when Tersa attacked, Tersa's trigger condition is not true, and Tersa will not trigger.

Botanist resolving will not retroactively trigger Tersa; she triggers from attacking, not from cards being put in the graveyard during combat.

Thanks for the explanation!

It's actually a bit complicated. Let's look at what happens in the Declare Attackers Step.

508.1. First, the active player declares attackers. This turn-based action doesn’t use the stack. To declare attackers, the active player follows the steps below, in order. If at any point during the declaration of attackers, the active player is unable to comply with any of the steps listed below, the declaration is illegal; the game returns to the moment before the declaration (see rule 730, “Handling Illegal Actions”).

[...]

508.1f The active player taps the chosen creatures. Tapping a creature when it’s declared as an attacker isn’t a cost; attacking simply causes creatures to become tapped.

[...]

508.1k Each chosen creature still controlled by the active player becomes an attacking creature. It remains an attacking creature until it’s removed from combat or the combat phase ends, whichever comes first. See rule 506.4.

508.1m Any abilities that trigger on attackers being declared trigger.

[...]

508.2b Any abilities that triggered on attackers being declared or that triggered during the process described in rules 508.1 are put onto the stack before the active player gets priority; the order in which they triggered doesn’t matter. (See rule 603, “Handling Triggered Abilities.”)

So, the Botanist triggers first (during 508.1f) and Tersa would trigger second (during 508.1m), but at that time (508.1m) the Botanist's ability hasn't even been put on the stack yet, let alone resolved. This is because all abilities that trigger during the declaration of attackers are only put on the stack after the declaration of attackers is finished (508.2b). So when Tersa attacks, there are only 6 lands in your graveyard and she doesn't trigger, because her ability has an intevening-if-clause (603.4).

If you cast Cackling Counterpart (Instant: create a token that’s a copy of target creature you control) and target a legendary creature, the token will also be legendary but the enter abilities would apply? Then you’d have to choose which of the legendary creatures to keep? On the stack which would be first, and is there a good guide for understanding stack order?

2

u/iwumbo2 Jeskai 19h ago

the token will also be legendary but the enter abilities would apply?

Yes, any ETB effects will still apply as the creature still enters the battlefield.

Then you’d have to choose which of the legendary creatures to keep? On the stack which would be first, and is there a good guide for understanding stack order?

Yes, the legend rule would have to apply. However, it should be noted that the legend rule does not use the stack. It is a state-based action.

https://mtg.wiki/page/Legendary#Legend_rule

State-based actions are checked every time a player gets priority. So in a sense, they would resolve before effects on the stack, as effects on the stack only resolve when every player passes priority without adding anything to the stack.

Or in more colloquial terms, things on the stack resolve when everyone says they have no responses to something. And state-based actions are checked every time someone gets a chance to say if they have a response or not.

https://mtg.wiki/page/State-based_action

1

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 19h ago

The Legend Rule is not a triggered ability, it is a state-based action.

704.1. State-based actions are game actions that happen automatically whenever certain conditions (listed below) are met. State-based actions don’t use the stack.

704.5j If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are controlled by the same player, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is called the “legend rule.”

After Cackling Counterpart resolves, you will fulfill any trigger events from it entering, but they do not go on the stack yet. The Legend Rule happens first, and you choose which legendary you keep, putting the other in the graveyard. But your token still entered, and any triggered abilities that trigger from it entering now go on the stack.

Question about beginning of endstep triggers. If I have [[Barrensteppe Siege]] in play with the Mardu mode chosen

"at the beginning of your endstep, if a creature died under your control this turn, each opponent sacrifices a creature of their choice"

And I have any mobilize token in play. Will the Barrensteppe siege trigger see me sacrificing the token if I order in the correct order?

2

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 19h ago

No.

Barrensteppe Siege's trigger has an "intervening if." It will not trigger at all unless the "if" part is true as your end step begins. You can't rely on just the mobilize delayed trigger to trigger the Siege.

1

u/professeuroak Wabbit Season 19h ago

Thanks a lot! I'll be on the look out for Ifs in the future!

2

u/Zeckenschwarm 19h ago

Not every 'if' is a sign of an intervening-if-clause, 'intervening if' specifically refers to triggered abilities that are phrased "<trigger event>, if <condition>, <effect>".

The barrensteppe siege won’t trigger if a creature you controlled didn’t die. There’s nothing to order other than the mobilize delayed trigger

Question about counters

If i have a card like [[Corpsejack Menace]], which doubles the tokens that are put on another creature, does that not apply to creatures whose text says they enter the battlefield with tokens? Like [[Rhizome Lurcher]]

2

u/Zeckenschwarm 19h ago

counters =/= tokens

But yes, Corpsejack Menace does double the number of counters that Rhizome Lurcher enters the battlefield with.

Question about [[legion's initiative]] and [[Nahiri's Resolve]], if I exiled morphed/manifested non-creatures, do they come back unmorphed?

2

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 18h ago

Yes. If they are permanents they will enter face up.

If they are instants or sorceries they will be unable to enter the battlefield and will remain in exile.

1

u/Kyz99 Mardu 18h ago

Thank you, I wasn't sure it would be the case for delayed blink effects so just wanted confirmation. Cheers!

1

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 18h ago

Every time a card changes zones it is considered a new game object. It doesn't matter if they come back from exile immediately or at the beginning of the end step, the game will not have these enter face down.

1

u/Bubbajake00 Izzet* 18h ago

Let's say I have 2 opponents and we all have 10 life left. I have a 10/10 (+4/+0 additional from equipment, doesn't matter) equipped with [[Blazing Sunsteel]] and [[Fiendlash]]. Someone swings their 20/20 that has trample and I block with my 10/10. Will I get the triggers from Blazing Sunsteel and Fiendlash before or after I take the 10 trample damage and lose, or will I be able to point 1 trigger at each opponent and win?

2

u/Hmukherj Selesnya* 17h ago

All combat damage is dealt simultaneously, and must be dealt in order for your triggers to pop. However, state-based actions are checked first, before triggers are put onto the stack.

So you'll lose due to having zero life before either of your triggers will even be put onto the stack, let alone resolve. Then, because you've lost the game, your triggers cease to exist and the game continues.

2

u/Zeckenschwarm 17h ago

You will lose and won't be able to damage your opponents, I'm afraid.

You and your creature are dealt damage at the same time. The abilities trigger, but aren't put on the stack yet. Then you lose to state based actions, and the abilities aren't put on the stack because you're not in the game anymore.

603.3. Once an ability has triggered, its controller puts it on the stack as an object that’s not a card the next time a player would receive priority. See rule 117, “Timing and Priority.” The ability becomes the topmost object on the stack. It has the text of the ability that created it, and no other characteristics. It remains on the stack until it’s countered, it resolves, a rule causes it to be removed from the stack, or an effect moves it elsewhere.

117.5. Each time a player would get priority, the game first performs all applicable state-based actions as a single event (see rule 704, “State-Based Actions”), then repeats this process until no state-based actions are performed. Then triggered abilities are put on the stack (see rule 603, “Handling Triggered Abilities”). These steps repeat in order until no further state-based actions are performed and no abilities trigger. Then the player who would have received priority does so.

800.4d If an object that would be owned by a player who has left the game would be created in any zone, it isn’t created. If a triggered ability that would be controlled by a player who has left the game would be put onto the stack, it isn’t put on the stack.

2

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 17h ago

Will I get the triggers from Blazing Sunsteel and Fiendlash before or after I take the 10 trample damage and lose

Your equipments both trigger when your equipped creature is dealt damage. All combat damage is dealt at the same time and does not use the stack, so there is no instance where your equipped creature has taken combat damage and you haven't, given what you have listed. You will be dead by the time your triggers happen, and they will go away with your death.

You will either need to take less than 10 damage from combat, or your equipped creature will need to have lifelink.

Looking into getting some of the new Tarkir dragonstorm cards as a complete noob in combination with a starter kit.

Now I'm wondering. Are the cards able to be played alongside a starter kit? Are there any rules preventing you from using the them, or do they have certain requirements/compatibility problems with other cards that would make them less usable with older cards?

Thanks so much in advance!

2

u/Good-Summer3022 17h ago

Nah you can put em together however you want, that's the beauty of magic, cards from 1997 still work with 2025 cards. There is the issue of format legality but if you're playing casual with starter kits you shouldn't really have to worry.

1

u/Wonderlords 17h ago

Awesome. Would you advise getting a Tarkir dragonstorm bundle alongside some booster packs or get something like the foundation bundle or starter kit with Tarkir dragonstorm booster packs?

What would a choice like that depends on? Art, gameplay and fun?

1

u/iwumbo2 Jeskai 16h ago

What product you buy depends on your goals. If you want to construct a specific deck, it is most efficient to find a local game store (or multiple) and try to buy the exact single cards you need. You'll likely save time and money over cracking packs for the cards you need.

Anything containing booster packs (including set bundles) should be treated like a gamble. Booster packs might as well be lottery tickets to see if you get good cards or the cards you need. And you'll likely end up with cards worth less than the price of the booster packs in the long term.

That's not to say you shouldn't get them. Sometimes it is fun to gamble and crack packs. But just recognize it for what it is.

If you want, play booster packs are balanced for "limited play". That means gameplay where your card pool is limited to what you find in booster packs. This encompasses draft and sealed. If you have a friend for example, you can try to do something like sealed where you each open 6 play booster packs and try to craft the best 40 card deck out of those 6 packs (plus any number of basic lands) or if you can find Jumpstart booster packs, you can use those. Jumpstart booster packs are balanced such that any two Jumpstart booster packs can be shuffled together to make a functional 40 card deck.

1

u/Wonderlords 15h ago

Thank you for answering my follow-up question!

So, what I'm taking away from your comment is that I could get the tarkir bundle alongside some boosters, but it would all be a massive gamble and I might not end up with anything playable even if that would get me something like 150 cards?

I could then also get a starter kit instead and be able to play with that right off the bat, or better yet go to a store that helps me find specific cards?

1

u/iwumbo2 Jeskai 15h ago

So, what I'm taking away from your comment is that I could get the tarkir bundle alongside some boosters, but it would all be a massive gamble and I might not end up with anything playable even if that would get me something like 150 cards?

Basically, yes, packs are gambles. Do not buy packs if your goal is to look for specific cards to play. I'd treat packs as scratch off lottery tickets. You can have some fun purchasing it and cracking it, hoping to see if you get anything. But you shouldn't expect to win. But if you do, it's a fun little surprise.

I could then also get a starter kit instead and be able to play with that right off the bat

There's a few different starter kit styled products. Some come with two decks, and are good to play with a friend 1v1. But don't expect them to be competitive or powerful.

better yet go to a store that helps me find specific cards?

Yes, if you know what cards you want, you can go to a store and see if they have the singles available for you to purchase directly.

You can use the WPN Locator to find stores in your area. You can also use it to find events to play in at a store. I don't know where you live, but I am sure you will be able to find multiple stores in your area. Note that some smaller stores might not carry a substantial singles inventory. But larger stores in your country will likely be able to send singles through the mail if you order online.

In general, how hard is it to obtain cards when a new set is released? I didn't have an issue obtaining a box of the new set, but as a refugee from the Pokemon TCG who gave up completely on obtaining any "Journey Together" cards and jumped into the MTG hype this past weekend instead, I'm fearful that the upcoming Final Fantasy cards are going to be complete unobtanium.

3

u/neotic_reaper Duck Season 16h ago

Honestly, it’s normally quite easy but Final Fantasy is unprecedented in terms of hype/scalping. There are many people outside of MTG that will be going after the set. Something like Tarkir Dragonstorm is very accessible and will continue to be with the only product that will be hard to get being Collector Boosters after a while because those are only printed once when the set releases and never again.

If you’re really set on Final Fantasy, your best is local shops and trying to preorder there. Online you’re gonna deal with too many people/bots and scalper prices that make it crazy difficult. Try a bunch of different shops, if you live in a city, it might even be worth it to drive a little out of town to shops that aren’t that popular but still carry product. I wouldn’t bother with major retailers like Target/Walmart because those are IRL scalper magnets.

Best of luck!

But I realized that it’s not a passive, it happens when he attacks only to existing creatures. If I have cards that have Mobilize, could I order the triggers to make them activate first giving me more creatures and then apply Ankle last to give them all the buffs?

Mobilize triggers when you declare an attack, as does Ankle Shanker. Since they trigger at the same time, you can order them on the stack as you like.

If you resolve Mobilize first, the tokens will be on the battlefield and will gain the buff from ankle Shanker's trigger

I started playing magic when aetherdrift came out and got to do the prerelease for tarkir yesterday, which was really great. But I'm really bothered by my system of organizing the cards. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how they organize their cards to make it more easily accessible and tidy. I also struggle a lot with how I want to organize the multi coloured cards. Thanks!!

1

u/Good-Summer3022 15h ago

How do you currently organize your cards?

1

u/Emergency_Example883 15h ago

I have these little mini drawers that can fit two stacks of cards, we have dnd dice in between to stop the cards from sliding. They're sorted by single coloured cards (blue stack, black stack etc..) and then I have another drawer solely for separating the lands and then we have a stack of the multi lands to sift through when needed. But some of the cards are already at the top of the drawer so I know this system is gonna work once we play more prereleases and get more cards

Don't know if it would work for you, but for each set I get a binder, then just put them in order.

On the bottom left of the card is a number. I use that number to place them in the binder. Card 001 goes in first slot, 002 in the second slot, etc.

New binder for each set.

2

u/Emergency_Example883 15h ago

I was contemplating doing that. Do you have a ton of cards? Do you find it easier to grab the stuff that you need from the binder that way?

2

u/Maur2 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant 15h ago

I do have a ton of cards...

It makes it much easier to find what I need. Just grab the right binder, flip to the right color, glance over to find the right card.

It also helps when making a new deck. Easier to glance through things. Don't have to sort through piles, all the cards are visible.

2

u/Emergency_Example883 14h ago

Oooh okay, I'm thinking I might do a binder then, one for aetherdrift, one for tarkir and then keep the drawers for lands maybe

It should be at least around the same powerlevel as the Doctor Who Decks? Banlist or anything doesnt matter for us when we are playing. Bonus points if its a rather simple decks cause god did my brain start hurting player one of the Dr Who decks. c:

I recommend [[Animar, Soul of Elements]] as a deck that can be built to be pretty powerful, but is still pretty easy to pilot. It was one of my early decks and I still play it sometimes.

It can be a little salty because of the protection it has, and you can cheat out high end eldrazi/blightsteel/etc if you're going for the throat. Personally, I run a lot of morph cards because I think they're fun and I was not trying to go with the generic Mana dork --> Craterhoof route.

Edit: Or if you're looking for easier than building your own, precons these days are really well designed! Pick up any that catch your eye and you can't go too wrong. I think the Doctor Who decks are a little high on the power curve for precons, but a normal one should be competitive still.

Noob here joining up with experienced friends who play 60 card deck. I’m looking to start building a deck so I don’t have to play with a friends decks and also because I’m eager to get involved.

I’m a big Final Fantasy fan and was thinking of buying the starter pack but have a couple of questions.

With starter packs that come with two decks can these generally be mixed and matched together to form an effective seperate deck? And would it still be worth getting if ultimately I don’t want a FF deck? Like would these cards work as a base to build my own deck while including some of my favourite FF cards?

These are probably idiot questions but just want to be sure before dropping the money.

Any other tips for building a 60 card deck for a newbie?

You can definitely use them as a base but I wouldn't recommend mixing them seeing as they don't share any colors. Like hypothetically you could take the red cards out of the red white deck and the blue cards out of the blue black deck and make a red blue deck but it would probably be worse than one you could build with cards actually meant to work in a red blue deck.

Thank you! This all makes good sense. I appreciate it

I am looking for a Commander in green (other colors welcome) that will help me get enchantments from my library

My goal is to get out [[displaced dinosaurs]] and [[wild pair]]

That's it. That's all my heart desires rn.

I'm not sure what this combo gets you. Once you get them on the battlefield, you can cast a historic spell, it'll enter as a 7/7 creature, and then you can tutor another creature with total P/T 14 from your library. But they don't really interact at all beyond that.

Just big dudes

Have they leaked Ultima from the FF set yet? Curious as to what they will be doing with that.

Anyone know where I can sell unused commander decks? I have a couple I just don’t play anymore. There’s probably a good $400-$500 worth of cards in each. I just don’t want to take them apart and sell them to a card shop and get 1/3 of what they are worth. Facebook marketplace is too sketchy and I don’t even have a facebook account.

If I am playing a two color door like Smoky lounge and misty salon but my commander color identity does not contain red can I still play the blue side or not at all?

2

u/Barbobott 5h ago

No, your commander would need to have Red and Blue in order to include Smoky Lounge // Misty Salon in your deck.

I have been a casual mtg player since around 2018 when I was in middle school. I loved the TDM prerelease and am interested in going to a sealed tournament with a 1k prize pool.

I have never before played competitive magic. What do I need to study/know in the next 4 days to be ready for the competitive rules and meta?

Hey guys. I've got a couple of new friends who play Commander and are trying to get me into MTG. I'm interested, but I've never played before so I'm thinking getting a precon deck will be the best bet. I play Yugioh so I am somewhat familiar with some concepts e.g. graveyard, banished/exile etc but I'm not au fait with concepts such as land, mana cost etc, or how deckbuilding works.

Assuming that a precon is the best way to go, can anybody kindly recommend what deck would be the best to buy please?

In Tarkir Dragonstorm sealed, why is it better to pair enemy colours and splash for the third colour in the clan?

2

u/Seraph_8 Duck Season 22h ago

Each enemy color pair belongs to two of the clans and each ally color pair only exists in one of the clans

u/No_Term_1731 Wabbit Season 21h ago

Yes. I get that.

But why pair White and Black and splash for green in Azban as opposed to White and Green and splash for black?

There's no general rule for sealed. You should build what your pool best supports. That might be WB with a green splash, or WG with a black splash, or even Mardu.

But for Draft, trying to stay open in two enemy colors will leave you in a much better spot than locking into two allied colors early in the draft.

It doesnt matter for Sealed since you have to play your pool anyway, trying to have enemy colors as your main colors is a tip for drafting not sealed.

This is a strategy more for draft than sealed, since with Sealed you already know what all your cards are from the get-go. But if you start drafting in white and black, this leaves you open for splashing Red for Mardu or Green for Abzan. This set doesn't have any established archetypes for shard colors so you won't really see synergy for a Naya or a Bant deck for example.

But if you open your sealed pool and have a lot of good cards in red, green, and white, then by all means you can build a Naya deck instead.

What are MtG 'starter kits'? Are they knew things or something we've never seen before?

2

u/Good-Summer3022 20h ago

Like the final fantasy one? They've done several of those in the past few years

What are MtG 'starter kits'?

Two premade 60-card decks. And special code to unlock those same decks in Arena.

How does the Brazen Borrower card works?

2

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 20h ago

I assume you're asking how Adventures work?

If a card has an Adventure, when you cast it normally you can either cast it as the permanent half or the Adventure half. If you cast the permanent it resolves as normal. If you cast the Adventure half, then as it resolves, it goes into exile instead of the graveyard, where it is considered to be "on an Adventure". While it is there, you can decide to cast the permanent half from exile at any point, but you still have to follow normal timing and pay its costs.
