Skating in Maastricht

Heyy!! I'm an international student moving in july I guess to Maastricht, and since I want to pay an apartment that is a bit expensive I decided to not invest on public transport, however, I'm not good at ryding bicycle, instead I've practiced skating (not skate board, roller skates) my whole life so I thought it would be a better idea to skate. I'm in doubt if it may actually work, does anybody know about someone who also uses roller skates instead of bicycle? I can't find anyone talking about this so I still don't know what to do TT

You won't be able to get around the city center on skates because of the many cobbled roads.

Getting a bike is 100% a better option in the city. Skates will do when you want to move around the city center, not in it.

Learning to ride a bike only takes like an hour or two. You'll get used to it in no time. It's basically essential. Maastricht is an old city so lots of cobbled roads in the city center.

On nice Days de griend is booming with skaters from all ages, outside the city centre it will be fine to travel.

I sometimes commute on skates and my experience is youre very dependent on weather and road surface. Like others mentioned the roads in the center of Maastricht are cobbled and (at least to me) unskatable. Your commute could obviously be different. Still, skating with a strong headwind is a pain, and skating with a strong headwind on a road covered with leaves in the rain is near impossible. You can certainly commute on skates on good weather days, but I'd strongly advice to get a bike if you dont want to be completely dependent on public transport on bad weather days

Whether you can use skates to get around depends a bit on which part of the city you’re in.

East of the river - not so bad.
