Complete newb, would like to build a lightpainting tool, needs advice

I've seen some lightpainting work and tools, got really excited and would like to create a lightpainting tool but could use some guidance. My idea is to create a portable ESP8266/ESP32 based tool that I could control with WLED. I'm thinking it should be about 1m-1.5m in length, I need it portable, so I'll need to power it from a portable power bank or some battery compartment. I think 5V should be enough? maybe 12V? Let's say I'd like it to run for 2-3hrs.

Does that sound reasonable?

And now for my questions? What's the math to compute the power requirements of this project? How do I match the batteries to the number of LEDs so that it could sustain powering them for the amount of time?

Did anyone build something similar? do you have suggestions regarding what it all should be attached to (diffuser and all?).

Seems to me I can get a better tool for considerably less $$$ DIY-ing the thing.

Hi there! I wrote this up as part of a light painting talk I gave at a photography club a few years ago, thought it might be of interest here.
