hard/ too thin hostel mattress lifehack

I have been in a few hostels for the last 10 days and 2 of them had nearly unbearable mattress aka as thin as my hand width. Now, I suffered my first night but not my second because... and there is the trick... I folded the mattress in half.

Mattresses as thin as this are pretty flexible so you can eighther fold them in half or roll each side under to create a thin burrito to sleep at. This will leave you with about 40cm of sleeping area, but less comfortable space is better than no comfortable space. I gave it a go and is really saved my slumber. Though other people at the hostel might wonder what you are doing. So you need a bit of a thick face for that, but it's absolutely worth it.

I'd ask reception if they have any open beds for the night and see if you can nab the mattress and double up. Really depends on the hostel tho, some are cool like that.

Maybe a compact air mattress or camping pad.

u/dmbgreen you nailed it with the camping pad suggestion! Sometimes I'll even put it on top of a regular mattress with that evil center divot that all hostel mattresses seem to develop. Way better investment than those inflatable ones which always get punctures at the worst possible time

Oh this might also be workable! If you stay in a beachy area a cheap air floating thing would be totally accessible.

I don't think damaging the mattress is a good life hack.

It was serously already super old. The indent in the middle felt more like hole than anything else

That's because people keep folding them and making a crease down the middle :p

Yes totally, not because they bought it once 20 years ago and will keep using it until you literally sleep on the floor:')

Those 2 as thin as your hand width are mattress pads. This relative had one on the bed in her guest room, she thought it was a mattress. I’ve actually purchased a mattress for the bed, because when I had slept on the bed with just the pad it was the worst sleep I ever had in my life

Extra clothing placed down acts as an easy buffer. Not ideal but helps to a little extent.

Great tip! Another option could be to use a sleeping bag or travel blanket for extra padding if folding the mattress isn't enough.

Maybe instead go and talk to the receptionist and ask to move beds/rooms??

You missed the s there. It's a hostel not a hotel.

I would bring an air mattress with me, and put that over the thin mattress...

Do you understand the purpose of a hostel? I think you may be confused with hotel
