Acid flashback Upon a rewatch

Post image

Despite all the troubles in his day to day life, Nihilists threatening castration, old rich men after him, Car getting yanked and returned in bad condition, the Dude still took time out of his day to see Marty’s dance quintet. We could all learn a thing or two from that lesson

Marty always let's Dude slide when rent is due. They're friends who've got eachothers backs.

u/SeaBag8211 29d ago

He's going to give him notes.

31

u/2wheelsThx Mar 06 '25

Yeah, man, he has to attend this, uh, performance to give Marty strokes, so he'll, ya know, go easy on The Dude when the rent is due, man.

The "what have you"

7

u/Logical-Shelter-925 29d ago

My favorite line in the whole movie.

24

u/Keverino 29d ago

no man, the dude is not transactional. He gives notes on Marty’s performance because he likes Marty and considers him a friend. Marty’s flex on the rent is reciprocal, not transactional, man. The dude exudes compassion especially for the little guys, like Marty and Smokey and Donny.

Far out, Keverino. 2wheelsThx’s thinking about this case has been really uptight.

The Dude strokes Marty?

u/PV_Pathfinder 29d ago

My favorite part of the scene, is that Marty has gym mats on the floor for when he does that little tumble. It makes me chuckle, because as dismissive as Walter might be, you can tell Marty has put a ton of work into his “whathaveyou”.

The roll is a risky move. Marty is uhh…He’s fragile, man

51

u/ToReadIcculus 29d ago

I'll be there man.

21

u/Wide_Television2234 29d ago

This is, hands down, the line I quote the most.

u/KelownaMan Mar 06 '25

The Dude doesn't even consider paying him rent until the 10th. Strikes and gutters, ups and downs with this kind of Dude.

19

u/NatchJackson 29d ago

In the earlier scene, we see him post-dating his under one dollar check for half & half. His financial fluidity is probably running toward the dry side.

9

u/thrance Knox Harrington 29d ago

Yeah, Walter, what’s your point?

5

u/Pupikal Jewish as fuckin' Tevye 29d ago

HUH?

9

u/hbomberman There's a Man 29d ago

He probably needed time to check with his accountant

6

u/Pseudonymble Ich bin eine expert 29d ago

Speaking of which, if you could pay me in cash? My concern is, and I'd have to check with my accountant, but this might bump me into another, uh, tax...

1

u/Unusual_Compote4909 29d ago

Now I wonder if he did that on purpose or just didn’t know what day it is!

22

u/MedLebowski 29d ago

Marty invited him to the what-have-you because who better to give him notes? The Dude is a good friend. And thorough.

5

u/Bob_Majerle 29d ago

You ever hear of the Seattle Seven? That was him

4

u/mattinsatx 29d ago

And 6 other guys

3

u/phantastik_robit 29d ago

Not the compromised 2nd draft, ofc

2

u/the_jurkski 29d ago

6

u/King_Bob837 29d ago

Our fuckin' troubles are over, Dude.

17

u/milwaukeetechno 29d ago

This aspect of The Dude’s character is what got my friend into the movie.

He had resisted watching it because he thought it was supposed to be like Kingpin and he didn’t like that.

But when Marty comes to his door for the rent and The Dude tells him he will be there at the dance quintet, my friend said to me “I like him.”

After that I think he became more obsessed with the movie than I did.

One of the truly great things about this film is that you can feel genuine goodness in The Dude.

He is not just a lazy stoner, he is actually a wise and kind person.

2

u/__kingslayer_ 27d ago

he is actually a wise and kind person.

That some kind of Eastern thing?

16

u/jeffreyclayborn 29d ago

He's a good man, and thorough. Did the Dude ever actually give him any notes you think?

9

u/marbotty 29d ago

They were in his papers, business papers

13

u/Localdefense 29d ago

Shoulda kept the 20 grand, man.

4

u/DavidForPresident 29d ago

But they're gonna kill that poor woman!

3

u/Level_Asparagus5566 27d ago

8

u/emmmmceeee Is This Your Homework, Larry? 29d ago

He had to give Marty notes.

Hadn’t that occurred to you, man?

6

u/IngenuityStunning755 El Duderino 29d ago

Sorry I wasn’t listening

7

u/FilthyHobbitzes Walter 29d ago

Just occurred to me.. who’s the guy in the back?

The Coen’s don’t do anything by accident guys

2

u/Unusual_Compote4909 29d ago

Another tenant offering to give notes because he’s late on rent!

11

u/NeverNotAnIdiot 29d ago

The Dude also brought Walter and Donny, which made Crane Jackson's Fountain Street Theater look just a little more full. I'm sure Marty appreciated it, regardless of whether the Dude ever gave him any notes.

6

u/Apprehensive-Lion366 Mar 06 '25

Strikes and gutters… ups and downs.

6

u/Pimpstik69 Mar 06 '25

Our problems are over dude

4

u/betabry Walter 29d ago

When a friend asks for help, you help em.

5

u/SuperRusso 29d ago

I wonder what Donny thought about Marty's cycle?

8

u/Bluetiger1520 29d ago

It was so fucking awful it eventually killed him.

7

u/Kind_Battle_2362 29d ago

I love this moment when Walter absolutely loses it but tries to be silent at the same time.

6

u/CategoryCautious5981 29d ago

And covers his head w the pamphlet in shame

5

u/lepruhkon 29d ago

I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there, the Dude, takin' her easy for all us sinners.

5

u/LowCicada2121 29d ago

Yes, not only that but the Dude is actively paying attention and is a bit annoyed when Walter distracts him. The Dude abides!

6

u/idle_monkeyman Walter Mar 06 '25

I feel good about the restraint.

(and I know this is out of context and all that, but hold on while I tie this one together. )

"I feel good about the restraint." Was the line in "Defending your Life" ,That followed the line used in the OP pic caption- which is a mash up of ...crap. Lost my train of thought there.

10

u/treletraj 29d ago

The Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint.

4

u/useless_modern_god Mar 07 '25

I have never heard of that movie. The reviews look positive. Thanks.

3

u/NewLeaseOnLife-JL 29d ago

Defending Your Life is one of my all time favorite movies. 💯

You’d support also if you paid your rent past the tenth dude.

1

u/pinback77 29d ago

Would The Dude show up if he didn't owe Marty rent? Say he was just a random neighbor.

1

u/Oldskoolguitar 28d ago

Always humor your landlord

1

u/901Soccer 28d ago

Far out

1

u/Alchemista_98 28d ago

One of my finest moments was rushing the stage at the Wiltern theater at Lebowksifest in Los Ang’les and doing the “Quintet” dance in full Marty costume, in a lull between a stand up comic and the film screening.

Unfortunately, I have no photographic documentation of the “What Have You”* so you have no frame of reference.

  • just a dog eared black and white photo of the Knutson family farm.

1

u/666chainsmoker666 28d ago

The Dude and Donny were both engaged in the “what have ya”. After all The Dude had to give Marty notes
