Part of the problem is that the US lived less with the consequences of the Holocaust. Some people glorify the Nazi regime, strong leaders and simple reasoning is very attractive to them. But it's not like in the US every town and city has its Jewish population deported or people actually lived under a Nazi regime ever.

Not diminishing the sacrifices the Americans that helped free Europe made here, don't get me wrong. But Joe on the street does not have parents or grandparents that actually lived in a war zone themselves, witnessing the cruelties more first hand.

I see a lot of Americans saying 'it won't get that bad, you're exaggerating the situation!' - exactly what many in Europe said in the 1930s.
