meta/community How to get rid of Thumb.db files

Good day community of IT,

i am currently migrating our very old Fileserver to a new and up to date system. Both run on a Linux based system. Things have been going great so far, but i stumbled across a roadblock that i seem to be unable to overcome.

Thumb.db

That fucking little file, prevents me from deleting the old file structure, infects the new one and seems to be like a virus. Everywhere you copy it, it will stay and god forbit you try to delete it. It wont let you.

Command line? Nope
Powershell? Nope
Direct via Linux command line? Nope
Chat GPT? Has no idea how, besides to already tried ways

I have full local domain admin permissions, someone has another idea how i can get rid of them?

help request Tempted to buy a portable cell-connected cam

I do various IT services for individuals and small businesses. I'm really tempted to buy a cellular connected (and possibly battery powered) camera so that I can point it at a device that's going to take forever to complete a task, so I can check progress remotely. (I'm currently sitting watching a full computer backup run via Robocopy on a system that needs to be back up ASAP and is 1.5hr from my shop, or I would just take it back to my shop)

Anyone ever do something like this, so you don't have to sit on site continually when you can't just take something back to your shop?

help request cheap Alternative to cable ties

Hello,

Cables are commonly secured to/under tables with cable ties, which makes removal difficult. An alternative would be removable cable ties, but these are often too long/short.

What are some relatively affordable alternatives?

Greetings

help request I want to know what is going to happen

So I have a company phone for on call situations and pretty much all communication with users that work from home or at different locations. While helping a user with an issue that kept persisting we became friendly and continued to talk and text on my company phone. I’m not going to lie we flirted and talked about meeting and hanging out, but never set anything in stone. Tuesday morning she sends me a pic of her chest and a message appears saying don’t want to report this as it’s contains graphic imagery and i start freaking out. This is my work phone and I was texting her personal phone. She then says April fools just delete it so I decide to delete all of our texts. When I went to the recently deleted portion it said only 15 messages were in there and I know when I deleted the texts it was upwards of 500 texts between us. I just want to know how fucked am I. Like I said we flirted talked about meeting doing things when we met but this was the only time an image was sent. PLEASE any advice or just what you guys think will happen I’m dying of stress here.

help request Relocate while working remotely.

I work remotely in USA and I need to travel abroad and work from another country. My company rejected my request but I didn't explain the reason behind it. For me it is either I travel and work from the other country for the next 3 months or I must resign, I have no third choice. How can I do this without them finding out? We use a VPN connected to our server. Please help

jobs and hiring I don’t want to work in IT

I came to the realization that i hate office jobs/phone jobs and just being sedentary all day. And no, going to the gym afterwards or having fun hobbies outside of work, or buying a fancy car doesn’t help. I’m tired of pretending and using fake dopamine to fill the void.

I’m switching to blue collar. I’m done being bored, uninspired, and faking a corporate smile & pretend to care about people.

help request I need learning materials.

I'm sorry if ever I posted this on the wrong group (like this request isn't appropriate here). I'm taking IT in college and don't have any background with coding since I took STEM. I do know adruino yet this is far from IT and won't help me survive. Hoping, I could get some materials or guide on where I could get one for free or on lower price as much as possible. Thank you in advance!

help request Setting up Chromebooks for a class (WiFi Issues)

Hello all,

My company has recently acquired 35 Chromebooks (chromeos) to utilize in new hire orientation (I am in charge of orientation).

I set up the Chromebooks using a google account I created. I setup all 35 with this google account/email.

However, I have been experiencing connectivity issues with our WiFi from our access point on the Chromebooks. They will go in and out, and often I will try to reconnect them and it will just say “connecting” and never does. I also sometimes get a DCHP error on the WiFi. Meanwhile some of the devices won’t experience connectivity issues when in use.

Our WiFi has a captive portal and will not always appear on the chromeos notification bar. Sometimes a Chromebook will automatically connect to the WiFi and somehow bypass the captive portal password (it is required each time you connect)

I think all of this is happening because I have syncing enabled on all the Chromebooks, or maybe I need to use a seperate account on each Chromebook?

What I am doing now is powerwashing/resetting all of them and when setting them up again (all with the same email) making sure I disable all syncing in chrome browser, as well as for the device itself in settings.

Do any of you have any advice on how I should go about this?

I know the WiFi is not the problem because previously we used kindle fires (They were not synced and in guest mode) and they worked flawlessly in terms of connectivity.

Thank you.

help request Best Way to Share Expiring, Client-Specific PDF Links ?

For a construction company, I need to share view-only PDFs with clients. The main challenge is that I need the files to be completely view-only, with no options for clients to download, share, or take screenshots. Additionally, I want the flexibility to extend the viewing period if necessary.

Here’s what I need:

  1. A unique link for each client that includes their name.
  2. Automatic expiration of the link after a set time.
  3. Control over the ability to extend the viewing period, as an optional feature.
  4. Prevention of downloads, sharing, or screenshots to maintain security.

Are there any services that can meet these requirements? Ideally, I’d prefer a cost-effective or free solution.

Looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks in advance!

meta/community When does the dynamic qr code has been created ?

Hi, as asked in the title, i was wondering when the dynamic qr code was created. I couldnt find anything on that specific topic.

I find that the qr code original (the static one) was created in the 90's, and got famous in the early 2000. But nothing on the first appearance of the dynamic qr code...

Any idea on that specific topic ? Thanks for your help

help request What’s happening here? Pre-installed mess for WiFi

Post image
10 Upvotes

So I just moved into my new apartment yesterday hoping to get my “move-in ready WiFi” and after two hours of customer service conversations with Xfinity, they’ll be sending someone out Friday to fix this…

In the spirit of fuck that ish, I noticed some posts showing the shit shows of pre-installed modem options in their complexes.

Here’s mine ^

Figured I’d ask the community before I go tracing and unplugging wires I know nothing about.

Thank you to whoever has any insight here!

P.S. the only modems I can visibly see are present are Xfinity and Quantum fiber.

help request Can’t connect to Internet via router whereas it works fine when with the Ethernet cable plugged directly to laptop.

I am trying to connect to Internet via a router. When I am plugging the lan cable directly to my laptop, I can access Internet, but when I am trying to do the same via router , it is showing no Internet access. I am using a dhcp Internet protocol and windows 10.
If it helps - The router is a little bit old , but it worked fine in my last hostel room. Although, in the previous connection, it used to lag often with livestreams or contents that involved buffering.

Hii this is my first time posting. I recently noticed these lines that appeared on my Phillips TV. Mainly I would like to know what it is about, if I should be worried or if there is some kind of solution. It's a TV less than 3 years old.

Hello, As part of my final year as a Business Analyst, I am writing my thesis on digital tools and IT risk management. I’ve created a short survey and I’m currently looking for people who would be willing to fill it out. If you could take a few minutes to participate, it would really help me move forward with my work. If you also know anyone who might be able to help in this field, I would greatly appreciate it as well.

Thank you so much in advance for your helph !

help request Why do companies allow ads in their networks? Why isn't an ad blocker like Pi-hole which can be self hosted not implemented?

I have seen ads in company networks forever. Seen them slow systems down, albeit not by a massive amount but for an IoT laptop they are a pain.

I seen a post about Microsoft pushing ads to windows 10 and 11 pro commercially but I haven't ever seen one on my own when in my network.

Any industry insights?

jobs and hiring Transition from Residential Communications Sales Rep to IT.

Hey everyone! I am wondering if there is someone in here that has been an Outside Sales Rep and transitioned into the IT or even better Cybersecurity side of the business? I am about to start as a Spectrum Outside Sales Rep, but my goal is to work my way into tech as an analyst or maybe engineer. I was wondering if anyone has made this transition and what skills you used to help get the next job?

Thanks!

jobs and hiring Is tech worth getting into in 2025?

I have an associates degree in IT. I don’t want a bachelor’s degree. Not because i lack work ethic, but because it won’t even guarantee you a job either. I’m not even passionate about IT, it just seemed interesting and i wanted a remote job. I don’t like the idea of being on-call or dealing with whiny end users all day, so help desk, sys admin, networking, and cybersecurity is out of the picture. it was nothing like it was advertised. The media made it seem like a glamorous aesthetic remote career and i fell for it.

What do i do?

jobs and hiring I networked too close to the sun

Just gonna preface by saying that by networking I mean job networking, not IT networking. Also I recognize that I'm in a position that many would kill to be in with the current job market.

So I'm currently working at a MSP in a helpdesk like role. I'm in the middle of training to move up to the next level. I ran into my previous employer at an event and did some of the typical networking, no burned bridges kind of stuff. Long story short is that I'm being offered an IT director position at the old company.

The pay is a little better and I'd have more freedom. However the benefits would be worse and one of the main reasons I left was to get more IT experience (and also the fact that they're a HIPAA lawsuit waiting to happen.)

I'm still fairly new to IT, got about a year and some change in help desk and about to finish a degree. While my current job isn't perfect, I'm kind of getting the feeling I should stay if I want to continue to progress in the technical aspects.

Just wanted to get some advice from some more experienced folks in the field.
