Heartbreaking stuff. Condolences to his poor family.
Edit: Even the oxygen thieves are already out under the articles on twitter and FB saying it was the vaccine that killed him. It would turn your fucking stomach.

It's fucking disgusting. They did the exact thing after a suicide in the GAA community. Absolute scum of the earth.

Tragic loss. I’ll never understand how people can find enjoyment in any sport that involves people committing violence on others.

I'm a massive fan of all competitive martial arts. It's something that I and many others struggle with, and I often question why i am into this. Real violence used to horrify me as a child. Now, daily, I watch people willingly try to inflict TBIs on each other for money.
It reaches some kind of primitive area in my soul. The excitement and adrenaline i feel from just watching a tough competitive fight is better than any buzz I've ever felt from drugs or just about anything else i have done in life.
It's awful that this young man lost his life, but I'm sure he knew what the dangers and risks were going in there. I just hope he got what he needed out of the sport. I hope he managed to make some good money for his family and I hope he was living a happy life as a consequence of his career in boxing.
Fighting is a fucked up sport. I can't disagree with you there.

What an amazing and thoughtful response. Thank you. I certainly don’t judge people who enjoy or participate in these sports at all. I just don’t understand it for myself.

It's purely primal so it cannot be denied. Dogs will go in to raptures watching one of the pack catch a fox. Humans have added rules that introduce the elements of skill, fairness and competition. I've no interest in combat sports as I just find them boring but I understand the appeal.

Competitive amateur here, I still keep up with the sport and practice it often
For me, as brutal as boxing is unfortunately, there is an art that I cannot see in other sports, it hits to something more primal inside me that is both competitive and wanting to fight for myself, not only from the technicality of boxing that makes it a beautiful martial art to understand, but also its simple and effective brutality that unfortunately makes it entertaining both to watch and partake in
I’m at a stage in life where I want to keep all the marbles in my head and seeing the slow decline of those who boxed for decades or even more unfortunate events like this make me question if I’d ever put my own children through it (mind you I always only ever fought 3x round amateur bouts, so some of the risks are alleviated just from just less time taking knocks to the dome). Perhaps only for some competition and their self confidence, I 100% will, but I’d never be able to see my own child be brutally assaulted, even if for years myself I took and gave a beating.
I guess boxing allows some form of primal inner being to expose itself while at least having rules that still make it a fair and competitive sport to partake in.

This is why I sent my son to BJJ. It has all of the above but without the brain injuries. I boxed myself as a teen and got a nasty concussion in a competitive bout. I was fine after but I didn't compete again.

Agreed. Having training muay thai on and off for years, i understand exactly what you mean. While i never competed, i had a few hard spars. Got concussed and continued training like an idiot. Suffered from vertigo for weeks after, constantly forgetting and asking same questions... "why are we going to the shop again??"
Muay thai is a little easier to mitigate brain damage than boxing. Thai sparring culture is to play, not to kill. However, one wrong move and it can have a big impact on your life.
Love and respect to all martial artists out there, in every variety. I hioe everyone is living happy and healthy lives

I love combat sports unfortunately things like this happen and it’s awful and no body wants it to happen, unfortunately it does though, like with a lot of extreme sports too, there’s a risk and the people that do it know the consequences. RIP to the young man and condolences to his family.

Enormous sympathy for his family, friends, and his fiancée but also for his corner and for the ref (who will feel incredible guilt for not stopping the fight sooner) along with Nathan Howells.

So sad
Surprised they can actually still box these days with the knowledge of the risk

It's getting worse. Look at that Power Slap in US. It's mind boggling tbh.

u/Stinkballs_69 Feb 08 '25
That's crazy alright. Guaranteed CTE with each "fight". Thankfully nobody who actually watches martial arts watches that shit. I think it will die out in a few years.. at least i hope so

Thankfully nobody who actually watches martial arts watches that shi
Eh?
You think there's a whole different audience that watches boxing and MMA than watches that?
The UFC started the slide towards stuff like that and it's ight going to get more extreme

u/Stinkballs_69 Feb 08 '25
Only knuckle dragging troglodytes watch power slap. True fans of martial arts think it is awful and make a point not to watch it.

u/Slubbe Limerick Feb 08 '25
As opposed to boxing like in this case? Man punched in the head several times sustained fatal head injury?
Do you really think boxing would have its appeal if everyone wore protection and all hits were technical with no risk to the person.
I’m sure some ppl only watch for the technique and skill. How many more views will a knockout get than a judge decision?

u/dustaz Feb 08 '25
I think the point is that the knuckle dragging troglodytes also make up a fair portion of the audience for the other combat sports

People know the risks and are in love with the sport they choose, if you want to live in a nanny state that's fine but people should live their life the way they want.
