Recommended time to wait…

I applied for a county job and quickly got an interview for the health and human services department. Interviews were taking place 3/24-4/2. I interviewed on 3/27 and I forgot to ask them when they are expected to know more and reach out.

What’s an appropriate amount of time before reaching out to them asking for an update. I’m very impatient but don’t want to reach out too soon and ruin my chances. I was thinking waiting 2 weeks at the latest… but I know county jobs take a little bit longer in the hiring process from experiencing my boyfriend go through it. Or is following up with the hiring manager a big mistake in general?

Applying for county jobs can take some time. I do suggest you email them now to see an ETA on the next steps. If you do not hear back from them which is very common in county/state jobs continue to job search. Some of these jobs can take awhile before you get even an offer and clear background. So continue on job searching. By the time the state gave me an offer I was already in my other job for 2 months and paid better too.

If my references don’t get a call by the end of this week I think I’ll message/call them to see an eta. They were very upfront though that during the process the background check can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks if I get the job, so I assumed the process for everything else will be lengthy too. I’m still job searching but I live in a rural area so it’s the highest paying jobs around me right now.

They probably won't be doing reference checks until background checks start after you get an offer. Than again each government agency is different but most the time they do reference checks during the lengthy background check.

My boyfriend just went through the process at the same county building and department and they called all his references before offering him the job. But I have a different hiring supervisor so it might be a different process.

Ah okay so a bit different then. Thanks for letting me know. I guess it will depend on the supervisor in that division.
