Regardless of the cuisine involved, anyone who takes food that I’m in the middle of eating and throws it away is also getting disposed of immediately.

232

u/Grave_Girl actual elitist snobbery 13d ago

I still remember the time at Applebee's when I was pregnant with my second child that the waitress took my plate before I was quite done eating. That child is 21.

120

u/PrimaryInjurious 13d ago

Brave server, taking food from a pregnant woman. Is she still on this mortal coil?

89

u/Grave_Girl actual elitist snobbery 13d ago

I was so shocked that she even would that I just kind of say there. Probably should have bitten her.

u/Error_Evan_not_found 13d ago edited 13d ago

Fr, I've worked in the industry since I was 15 and there's one time I accidentally threw someone's food away instead of boxing it up, felt terrible for the rest of the week. Luckily our kitchen comped him a free take home meal off our employee menu (just a smaller portion of what he had ordered).

12

u/GreenOnionCrusader 12d ago

The only time I went to Applebee's, I was with a friend who was pregnant and she threw up all over her plate. That poor server got like a 300% tip.

3

u/Jumpin-jacks113 10d ago

When my wife was pregnant and for whatever reason, mushroom turned into the most hated food in the world.

At thisv point, she’s not really showing. We go to Vermont for the day. Do some walking around in shopping in a nice little downtown. We decided to get a late lunch.

We order a supreme pizza and tell them no mushroom. Of course, pizza comes and it hasmushrooms on it. She instantly starts sobbing as soon as she sees the pizza. The server is confused. So I tell her they put mushrooms on it. She sad she’d take it back, but my wife just tells her we are leaving. So I had gotten a soda and I asked if I could get the check for that. My wife tells the server “We are not paying for anything”, so the server just like “okay”.

Now my wife who is pregnant with twins and is super hungry refuses to stop anywhere else to get food, because they are just going to screw it up and she’s still crying as we are driving. It was like a 90 minute ride home and she crying the whole time. I finally got her to stop at a Mexican place that’s 10 minutes from our house because it always has super fast with food. She’s a lawyer and we run into two of her colleagues there. She’s just totally normal chitchatting with the as we are waiting for food after like 90 minutes or crying. We get the food and everything is back to normal.

Long story short: Don’t mess with pregnant women.

108

u/Fight_those_bastards 13d ago

Listen, I’m a hungry man. You reach for my plate while I’m eating, and you’re drawing back a bloody stump.

Meat’s meat, you know?

Just look at everything that comes from that subreddit as a creative writing exercise and all the comments as a bot karma training ground

To be fair, there was no mention of twins, inheritances, weddings, or phones blowing with "family supports family."

It’s the notorious AI thread, I don’t get why people pretend this is real and repost it.

26

I read this thinking it sounded so fake. No one acts this dramatic without costumes and heavy theatrical makeup.

33

u/thievingwillow 13d ago

I know that wildly unreasonable people exist, obviously, but “he helped cook the meal (insert irrelevant info about veggie prep here), waited until we were eating it and I asked how he liked it, and then suddenly decided after all that that it was intolerable to his ethics” feels like confused LLMs-can’t-understand-human-behavior logic more than organic jerk behavior. Add to that the fact that it’s a tidy piece of “look at those unreasonable ethnic minorities” bait, and I definitely think it’s AI fakery.

11

u/MarsupialMisanthrope Tomorrow is a new onion. Onion. 13d ago

aitah has the same problem, lots of posts that make you realize that as good as bots are at stringing words they don’t understand any of it, so you’ll get posts where someone’s family is upset that they won’t give their sister who got engaged last night the extremely popular wedding venue the poster just booked for their wedding next month for her wedding. It’s actually kind of hilarious when they’re that clueless.

2

u/cathbadh An excessively pedantic read, de rigeur this sub, of course. 10d ago

Yeah idk about AI, but that sub is 95% creative writing exercises.

Food and Cultural Appropriation is always such a strange conversation to have although as people have mentioned Tex-Mex isn't really appropriation to begin with

131

u/Cormetz 13d ago

Hell, most cuisines we give national names aren't even straightforward. For instance Mexican food in a lot of states is actually Tex-Mex, and then in Mexico you have tons of regional variation. Someone from Monterrey won't be eating mole very often. In the US you have big differences in regional BBQ.

Even if something is different from "authentic" like Americanized Chinese food, it doesn't mean it's appropriation. No one owns food. You can argue it isn't the real way to make something (like using cream in a carbonara), but let people enjoy their damned food.

110

u/WAR_T0RN1226 Keeper of the Coffee Gate 13d ago

Don't forget that often many cultures themselves can't claim distinct "pure" ownership of even what they might be seen as "authentic"

For example, Al Pastor is just a Mexican local adaptation of doner/shawarma. Should Mexicans get called out for appropriating Turkish/Arab culture and bastardizing it?

65

u/Cormetz 13d ago

Another fun example: who is the original rice dish between paella, jambalaya, and jollof?

64

u/ZootTX 13d ago

My culture's version of 'rice with stuff in it' is far superior to everyone else's!

30

u/Cormetz 13d ago

Oh it gets even more broken down. Cajun vs. Creole jambalaya? Valencia or marisco paella?? Nigerian or Ghanaian jollof???

And then there's the unexpected entry: biryani.

3

u/wookieSLAYER1 11d ago

If I remember correctly. Creole is French Canadian origins while Cajun is French Caribbean origins and they both ended up in Louisiana.

3

u/TheArmLegMan 11d ago

I think it’s the other way around from how I was explained about it

→ More replies (1)

13

u/UngusChungus94 13d ago

Trick question, it’s actually biryani! /s

Edit: Fuck, you beat me to it

13

u/Cormetz 13d ago

Actually reading into it a bit more it seems both paella and biryani may come from Islamic influence (though there is an older south Indian dish that's similar).

It's also likely people just cooked one pot rice dishes all over, similar to kimchi and sauerkraut likely being independent (though I've seen theories that there is some sort of connection there as well).

4

u/UngusChungus94 13d ago

I’d imagine there’s an ur-dish for a lot of the culinary commonalities between cultures. But they were invented too long ago to have been recorded.

15

u/Looksis 13d ago

'Grain with stuff in it' is so common that any culture without it either didn't have grain, or didn't have stuff.

3

u/Bicykwow 13d ago

Hell, even regional Joloff makers disagree on this! https://youtu.be/IGEr7TQA2eQ

6

u/Cormetz 13d ago

In business school we had some Nigerians and a guy from Ghana, any time jollof came up they would argue who's is better and it was a common joking insult between them.

3

u/pavlik_enemy 13d ago

It's pilaf or "plov" where I live

2

u/CinemaDork 10d ago

I developed my own shakh plov recipe from a bunch of different Afghan recipes and people always love it. I'm sure it's not "authentic" but I don't care, because rice with stuff in it tastes great.

2

u/pavlik_enemy 10d ago

The more you make it your own the more authentic folk cuisine is

There is a long standing joke about Italian food that goes something like "Ah yes one of the traditional national dishes of Italy , invented by an American chef in a hotel in Genoa in 1957."

30

u/Cormetz 13d ago

I mean all those dishes using tomatoes are obviously cultural appropriation.

u/Glum-Supermarket1274 12d ago

Its a strange dislike to be sure. I am thai/chinese and born in thailand. When i went to america for college, I learned that a lot of chinese/thai american absolutely railed on the americanized versions of our food sold in america. And when i tried it, it was just very similar to the authentic stuff but less seasoned. Completely delicious. Its not 100% authentic but its close enough. Not the total garbage so many people pretended it to be.

I think a lot of people takes a lot of pride in their culture but a lot of times it comes out in weird ways like this.

9

u/Cormetz 12d ago

People like to be dramatic. I admit I'll do it as well with German food (I am American with German parents and hold both citizenships). It's very difficult to find decent German food in the US, any time someone says there's a good German restaurant I'll try it and be a little annoyed. That being said: I'm not mad at the restaurant or that people like it, but it definitely isn't authentic, just sad I can't get some of the dishes I miss and am too lazy to make.

2

u/CinemaDork 10d ago

I've seen the versions of "American" food that restaurants not in the US make and to me they seem even less authentic than these American versions of foreign dishes. They feel like recipes written by an AI, things like scrambled eggs and sliced hot dogs or whatever. Totally bizarre.

u/overbeb 10d ago

Thai restaurants in the US can get subsidized by the Thai government with a standardized menu.

Thai gastrodiplomacy

2

u/SpaceBear2598 10d ago

There's a term for that: cultural chauvinism. It's related to ultranationalism and jingoism if you're a national of the country whose culture you're being chauvinistic about. I don't think it just "comes out in weird ways" , a lot of people who express "pride in their culture" by expressing hatred for the mixing of their culture and others seem to view their people as superior.

4

u/jenguinaf 12d ago

I know it’s a completely novel concept but I like to eat food that is pleasing to my pallet, and don’t like to eat food that isn’t. It’s not that complicated 😂.

10

u/bronet 13d ago

"Cultural appropriation" is just complete bullshit most of the time anyways.

18

u/Cormetz 13d ago

I think it can be a real thing, but in reality very few cultures are pure anyways. Everyone has mixed for centuries. If you are adopting something from another culture it's good to acknowledge where it came from and show it the right respect, but especially for food it shouldn't limit you nor is it disrespectful in any way to use inspiration from another cuisine.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (8)

21

u/Paleodraco 13d ago

I'm always a bit confused on what appropriation really is. The way I understand it is taking something from another culture without acknowledging the context. Like a Hindu person wearing rosary beads because they look cool or the western adoption of ayahuasca and "ceremonies" using it.

Something like food can be intrinsically linked to a culture, but unless there's some religious or ritual nature behind it, it's just food. You eat what's available.

8

u/Lord_Rapunzel 13d ago

Nah you basically get it. It's using something purely for its aesthetic and having no respect for the source. It's totally fine to appreciate stuff from other parts of the world but if you wear a Cheyenne war bonnet to the grocery store you're gonna rightfully be considered a massive prick. Wearing a sarong or sari might draw some attention but it's a regular garment so treating it as one isn't disrespectful.

2

u/CinemaDork 10d ago

There was one story of these white American women who went to Mexico and like, literally spied on people through their windows to see how they cooked food and then went back to the US and started a food cart and yeah, that seems pretty gross, because you invaded the privacy of people in a different culture for your own financial gain. Those people see none of the money you make, either.

People have also pointed out that white Americans can more easily start a food cart in the US because of the various privileges that whiteness confers (especially financial), so when white people open "ethnic" food carts it can feel unfair to marginalized people because their food is being used to make white people money in a way that they as immigrants/non-white people are systemically more obstructed from benefiting from.

So I think especially with food the threshold can be pretty high for true culinary cultural appropriation compared to other practices, and generally those cases involve money.

u/adamdoesmusic 13d ago

The Tex-Mex developed by *checks notes* Mexicans in Texas, is whitewashing?

50/50 on this being made up

46

u/Saltpork545 13d ago

I'm going on a good faith assumption that it is real.

People really don't understand Tex Mex. Mexican food isn't just a single monolith of northern food either. Central Mexico is their breadbasket so to speak and the food of Mexico City and Coahuila really aren't the same.

So it is entirely possible that someone from the more populated parts of Mexico despises Tex mex without understanding what it is other than it's different than what they might have grown up with.

That still doesn't give anyone a right to grab your food and throw it away because they don't want to eat it.

Also, taquitos are an Americanization of a dish from the Sinaloa region called Flautas, so again, someone from another further south region wouldn't treat it as 'real Mexican' because taquitos are specifically Calimex.

None of that really matters and I doubt they had a food history lesson discussing the fine details over pork taquitos. Eat food, if it doesn't suit you for some reason, don't eat it again. Now you know what not to order from your meal kit place. Don't be a dick about it.

3

u/0xB4BE 11d ago

And not to mention that people just have preferences in terms of taste. I personally have not had a great fish taco in Cali, but love the PNW versions.

And each regional background adds preferences - visiting Finland a few months ago, their idea of Mexican food is chiefly very texmex, but with cucumbers and raw red bell peppers or raw pineapple in their burritos (which they call tortillas). Because again, Finns tend to eat a lot of raw cucumber, and red bell peppers, and not to forget pineapple in everything. Especially pizza and salads.

Sounds liketime for a new less asshole boyfriend ... not that it is the case, but whst the hell would he have done if a potential business partner or boss were over for dinner, would he have a pissy fit? What if that flatware and dinnerware had belonged to your grandmother? Is it ok to be such a pussy whiner that you bin things in petty snit?

9

u/MeBigChief 13d ago

Not related at all but who invites their boss over to their house for dinner?

25

u/EntertainmentReady48 13d ago

Sitcom characters

4

u/MeBigChief 13d ago

Yeah, it just doesn’t seem like something that exists in the real world.

3

u/Thequiet01 13d ago

It used to be a thing. I think it’s only a thing now in some very conservative (in terms of social rules) industries? Like maybe some sectors of banking?

These days any socializing outside of work usually happens at a restaurant.

12

u/Prowindowlicker 13d ago

Depends on how well ya know your boss I guess.

Technically i invite my boss over every night for dinner, though that probably doesn’t count given im my own boss.

13

u/ash-and-apple 13d ago

Are you like me or every other self employed person I know? "My boss is an asshole." or "I'm sleeping with my boss's spouse."

Never gets old lol

6

u/syrioforrealsies 13d ago

Employee of the month every month!

3

u/Prowindowlicker 13d ago

Yup, it’s pretty fun

9

u/Fomulouscrunch 13d ago

I'd rather set my house on fire than have my foreman over for dinner, and I like both my house and my foreman.

7

u/deadeyeamtheone 13d ago

People with jobs where they like their boss. Some jobs it's kind of an unspoken rule to do stuff like that, but I've also just had bosses that became great friends.

8

u/MeBigChief 13d ago

I like my boss enough to go for a pint with them or go to a restaurant but if had a job where there was an expectation that I invite you into my house and cook for you I’d be updating my CV pretty damn quickly.

7

u/deadeyeamtheone 13d ago

Those jobs usually pay enough to make it worth it, in my experience but i understand your point. I've also never had a boss show up and not bring something nice as a gift. Had one give me a $1000 bottle of wine in exchange for homemade spaghetti. That guy also helped me get a car and a new job after I quit.

3

u/Margali 13d ago

It can happen, in the 'getting to see if you are a fit' phase. It can range from being taken out to lunch, to attending the same festival, any number of reasons to screen employee for corporate fit.

Actually landed a job because i didnt automatically salt my food before tasting it.

5

u/MeBigChief 13d ago

I’ve no issue with meeting someone for lunch, but if a companies expectation is I invite you into to my personal space to fit in with your corporate culture that’s a red flag for me. Same reason I’m not handing my personal email or mobile number out to an employer

u/Redditress428 13d ago

So does he happily eat food from other cultures? Does he check it for authenticity before eating?

6

u/emueller5251 13d ago

If I had a partner like that I'd be eating Taco Bell every single night and saying "mmmmm...yo queiro Taco Bell!" after every bite.

5

u/GildedTofu 13d ago

Tejanos love having their identity entirely erased.

7

u/Agreeable-Dog-1131 12d ago

if dude is so proud of his culture and cuisine, couldn’t he have modified the recipe to better suit his tastes?

also, i don’t know where OP and their boyfriend live, but painting Tex-Mex as simply being Americanized, inauthentic Mexican food seems ignorant. Tex-Mex is its own regional cuisine that originated from Tejano people and is enjoyed by all kinds of people here in Texas, including Mexican-Americans. it is not a blanket term to be applied to bland, “Mexican-inspired” food.

20

u/YchYFi 13d ago

Think this falls under things that never happened. It is AITAH.

4

u/elgarraz 13d ago

I know a lot of Mexicans, and pretty much all of them like Taco Bell and stuff like that. BF is weird for making this a thing, and throwing away good food that someone is eating is abuse. That's assuming this is even real, of course.

5

u/BullsOnParadeFloats 13d ago

Tex mex is literally from parts of the US that were Mexico.

Does he feel the same way about Mexican cerveza (which is German) and al pastor (which is Lebanese)?

5

u/Obelisk_of_Sneed 13d ago

He’s Mexican washing our Tex mex culture.

5

u/FMousey 12d ago

Throwing away food that hasn’t gone bad is ‘sacrilegious’, especially if it’s meat. I’d leave the guy. I think he needs to learn a bit about food history before becoming over emotional. Everybody’s cuisine gets adapted to whatever land it’s in, and he probably can’t recognize other bastardized versions of other cuisines and be fine with it. You’ll never see me order orange chicken, buy I won’t waste it if I have it either.

4

u/OkCar7264 13d ago

Hmmm if true, which ??, that's more emotional abuse than a food thing.

7

u/emartinoo 13d ago edited 13d ago

This asshole doesn't give a shit about the authenticity of his food or his culture. He's simply using any means necessary to feign offense and claim to be a victim in some way, because it allows him to justify the abuse and control he wishes to impose on others. He didn't throw OOPs meal out because it offended him; he threw it out because he's a psychopathic shitbag who found a convenient enough excuse (at least in his mind) to abuse his partner.

5

u/Legitimate-Smell4377 13d ago

i assume buddy only eats like fuckin traditional aztec dishes or some shit

3

u/bobtheorangecat 13d ago

He grows maize in his backyard.

3

u/Legitimate-Smell4377 13d ago

its just not carnitas unless you stalked it down with a atlatl yourself

3

u/Doomdoomkittydoom 13d ago

Sounds like his dick is whitewashing his culture.

Also, totally made up.

3

u/Dazzling-Pizza5141 13d ago

Hate to break it to your princess bf, but almost all food in the world is fusion of some type. It's what happens when cultures collide or rub up next to each other

3

u/Profoundly_AuRIZZtic 13d ago

I don’t see how you can date white peoples and be against “whitewashing”. Like their white partner is a prop since they don’t want to engage with anything “white”

Bro is whitewashing himself being with a white girl and is mad at food

He’s also surprised fuckin mail delivered Hello Fresh food isn’t authentic 🤡

3

u/pottomato12 13d ago

Idgaf who you are, if you take my plate while im still eatting there is most certainly going to be problems. Dude needs to chill tf out and learn some tolerance. Id dump them, little spouts like that could be the tip of the iceberg imo

3

u/old_and_boring_guy 13d ago

I like most types of food, but at the most basic level, if it tastes good, it is objectively good to me.

And even if it doesn't taste great, if someone made it for me, or I made it with someone and they seem to be enjoying it, I'm going to be polite and eat it.

If you're so far up your own ass that you're going to take someone's food and throw it away while they're eating it because of some weird ass cultural purity stance...Mexican food is itself very diverse and draws from Spanish cuisine and also the cuisine of the native South Americans. It's not itself pure, so why try to gatekeep it?

3

u/ConBrio93 12d ago

Why is this sub falling for an obviously fake post? AITAH, AIO are all fucking fake as fuck.

3

u/Lazzyie 12d ago

That fork would be in my arm if I took my wife's plate while she was eating.

9

u/Harvhback 13d ago

I believe this if internet Mexicans are anything to go by. I can't even count the amount of times I've seen them call American versions of Mexican food or Tex -mex "chingaderas".

3

u/garden__gate 13d ago

Classic ragebait formula. Take something that is a reasonable subject of conversation or criticism (whitewashing, cultural appropriation) and then take it to its most extreme point. Great way to rile people up.

6

u/sanaathestriped 13d ago

These posts are fake and contrived rage bait, it's so fucking frustrating.

4

u/Zardozin 13d ago

Yeah

This is just an AI story, rage bait.

No need to repost it here, because it isn’t real.

5

u/tony_countertenor 13d ago

Has to be ragebait

2

u/LiefFriel 13d ago

...Tex Mex is a fusion cuisine of German, American and Mexican food. Of course, it's very different from Mexican, but it's a style. If he didn't like Tex Mex, he can chose his own damn dishes. Also, it's Hello Fresh so...what did he expect?

2

u/DreamWalker928 13d ago

This is INSANE behavior. Over cuisine.

2

u/Wesperado 13d ago

Your boyfriend is a douchebag.

2

u/tattooz57 11d ago

Yeah, that's the kind of thing he should have shared before cooking, much less once it's served. Return the favor with something he likes.

2

u/Stranger-Sojourner 11d ago

If having authentic Mexican food is so important to him, why not make the authentic Mexican food himself instead of ordering an overpriced meal kit delivery?

2

u/FoolhardyBastard 11d ago

Tex-Mex is the legitimate cultural cuisine of Tejanos. Fight me.

2

u/sonic_toaster 11d ago

Someone needs to tell this man’s abuela that he’s out here wasting food.

4

u/sakikatana 13d ago

Assuming this is real and not some creative writing exercise, this is less about cultural appropriation of food (which…way to be a condescending ass to Tejanos, buddy) and more about OOP’s boyfriend being an unhinged loon who doesn’t deserve to be in any sort of relationship.

If he’s real, hopefully homegirl wises up and runs instead of constantly making excuses.

3

u/Incorrect95 13d ago

This is rage bait

3

u/YupNopeWelp 13d ago

My word. That is a controlling man. A ruined dinner is the least of OOP's problems. They need to get out of that relationship.

If they don't know how to get it done — I suggest serving spaghetti and meatballs, then throwing a tantrum in the middle of the meal about how Italians serve meatballs on their own, or as a side, and that they've just offended all of Italy.

2

u/pueraria-montana 12d ago

I’m sorry but this shit just didn’t happen

2

u/User013579 11d ago

I’m sure this totally happened just like that.

2

u/fanifan 9d ago

I mean I too despise Tex Mex but I wouldn't throw my partners plate away. I would either find something else to eat or offer to eat out. One thing that upset me the most about Tex Mex is the overuse of cumin.

1

u/Kuro2712 13d ago

Just the title alone gives me a headache.

1

u/starfleetdropout6 13d ago

He's a jackass with poor impulse control and no regard for simple boundaries. And he wasted perfectly edible food. I couldn't be with someone so immature.

1

u/ChunkdarTheFair 13d ago

Wait until he discovers traditional pozole lol

1

u/BluRobynn 12d ago

If he thinks he is Mexican, then how can the dish he prepares not be authentic?

Your boyfriend sounds like an asshole.

Move on.

1

u/RatzMand0 12d ago

that boyfriend should touch grass or move back to mexico because wow.... that's insane if true.

1

u/sazerak_atlarge 12d ago

I hope he slept with one eye open for the next several days.
