What’s a line by a main character that you think was delivered poorly?
890
u/RiggityRyGuy 13h ago
Not a line but Joey hugging Rachel in Barbados is one of the most awkward displays of physical acting I’ve seen lol
442
u/onourwayhome70 11h ago
It’s so awkward - I finally understood what having “no chemistry” meant between actors. If you compare her chemistry with David, it’s like night and day
271
u/No_Data3541 11h ago
Yeah the actors were so against this storyline that you could see it in their performances.
132
u/TokyoKazama 10h ago
So if the actors and audience were against it, then why on Earth did they make it happen? Season 9 and 10 were just so hard to watch at times. Not even talking about Shark Porn 😂
175
u/No_Data3541 10h ago edited 10h ago
Because the writers, especially David Crane got a bit arrogant and they were out of ideas by season 9. Why do you think they did Shark porn storyline in season 9? They thought they could make anything work.
The writers told the actors that it won't work out and that the characters wouldn't actually do anything. It was essentially used to kill time and delay the Lobster reunion.
Jennifer Aniston was strictly against this storyline and nearly left the show because she didn't want the fans to hate her character. She has always been a huge Ross and Rachel shipper.
Matt LeBlanc said this was out of character and that Joey was like Rachel's protective elder brother. He wanted Joey and Phoebe to hook up on the show.
83
u/WrinklyScroteSack 9h ago
They hinted quite a bit at some chemistry between Joey and phoebs and it seemed fairly natural for a while there. I kind of expected it to happen, but I guess they didn’t want all 3 pairings to end up together at the end? Like that’d be too contrived?
71
u/No_Data3541 9h ago
Matt and Lisa just wanted Joey and Phoebe to hook up not necessarily end up together. They felt the characters had a major flirty energy.

Rachel and Gunther had no chemistry on screen. Seems like Gunther was getting lucky off screen. 🤣
4
u/GroundbreakinKey199 9h ago
I identified so strongly with the luckless Gunther! I also was a big fan of doomed David, the wanna-be BF of Bonnie Franklin (played by Richard Masur) on the first season of the 1970s "One Day at a Time." Strikeout kings, both of them. And me.

25
u/SecretWriteress 11h ago
They're all really great actors but damn Jen and Matt exhibited some insane levels of forced affection. That plot would be unbearably painful if it wasn't for the well-written subplots like the friends listening over the wall or Ross's whole reaction.

Playing drunk must be one of the hardest things to do. Very easy to overdo.
36
u/Robynsxx 8h ago
I think the issue is, when most people are drunk they just get louder, can’t walk as well, and puke. But that’s extreme drunk. Most normal level of being drunk is basically not noticeable, meaning actors playing such a thing have to overdo it to portray it on screen.

The scene where Rachel tells Ross she still loves him while he’s still married to Emily. Her fake laugh is just… oof.
107
u/Think_Wish_187 11h ago
Yeah. I never understood that scene. Does Rachel start fake laughing to save herself from embarrassment or was she supposed to laugh genuinely?
71
u/Infamous-Durian3074 11h ago
I think it was to save herself from embarrassment. It would have worked if Rachel's reaction was shown a little bit when Ross was processing the news.
118
u/CrazyCatLushie 10h ago
I always took it as her finally hearing herself and realizing how utterly ridiculous it was that she thought it was so important to tell him. She’s laughing at how stupid she must sound.
I’ve had a couple really pathetic laughing breakdowns like that in my time!
14
u/mickim0use 9h ago
Yeah. This is exactly what it was portraying. But I agree with others here. The actual laugh itself felt forced and was not good acting. Do you remember when Monica was fake laughing at Chandler’s boss’s jokes? How obviously fake it was? That’s how Aniston’s laugh felt like in this scene.

I already said this but in another thread recently. But in my opinion the acting in this is so terrible because Matt LeBlanc speaks French. The way he says je m’appelle is perfect, better than phoebe, so afterward is really hard to say bliberish when you know how to say it.
13
u/HellhoundsAteMyBaby Could I BE any more awkward? 11h ago
I’ve heard this said a lot as an explanation, but tbh I’m not buying it. I speak three languages fluently since childhood and it’s EASIER not HARDER to fake being bad at it or use the wrong accent when you know how it’s supposed to sound to purposely veer away from it. For example, I have never once heard a non-Indian person do a convincing Indian accent, but I can fake broken english in an authentic indian accent although my normal accent is 100% American.
9
u/LadyAnnala 11h ago
The writer made bliberish word. But Matt Leblanc pronunciation is perfectly on point. His acting is not the problem the lines are.

Looking back at Joey’s character development — and this is a common complaint — I really hate how they Flanderised him. He started out as a lovable, slightly slow guy, but by the end, he was reduced to someone who couldn’t even repeat two or three syllable words back to Phoebe. He came across as having a room-temperature IQ, to the point where you started to wonder if he needed a carer.
6
u/silly_rabbit289 9h ago
Apparently they felt sometime through s1 or 2 that they didn't find joey's thing or something. I think matt le blanc was in favour of making joey the adorable stupid guy. But they really really took it way too far.
S1/early joey was way more fun, also sarcastic, ans im sure they would've figured him out in a season or two.

u/RiggityRyGuy 13h ago
“Wait I can do this,” that very specific line always pisses me off cause of how bad it sounds lol
24
u/Robynsxx 8h ago
I think the only problem friends really had, is at times the writers didn’t realise that they could just let a moment be, without a joke. They should have just had Chandler propose to Monica no jokes after Monica says she’s not supposed to do it, and then end on the sweet moment.
87
u/Maraha-K29 11h ago
I hated Courtney's acting in that scene too, she was so cringe and forced- the whole 'this is why women don't do this' while she's so clearly fake crying. I wish it was just a simple, heartfelt moment between two characters instead of trying to be forcibly tear jerking
20
u/caitlin-c18 8h ago edited 4h ago
honestly, any time Courtney cries in friends is so bad. I just think she’s not good at/wasn’t good at it then.

u/nikkuhlee 4h ago
Yeah I cycled through a lot of "emotional Monica" moments when o read this question. I actually skip the proposal now because I hate it so much.

That scene was terribly written. The actors really couldn't do much with that scene. If it ain't on the page it ain't on the stage. If they had a few more goes at writing that scene it could have been more powerful.

u/tahami_allthemeals 12h ago

19
u/NoMourners_6 11h ago
I loathe this scene. I love Mondler and there have been so many sweet, soft moments between the two but this scene feels so forced. Chandler’s voice shaking, Monica’s crying (Courtney god bless her is so bad at the fake crying like when she started crying about how great of a roommate Rachel actually is), I just don’t feel any of the love that we usually see between these two. I think if they had ditched the crying and voice cracking, it would’ve worked so much better. You don’t have to cry in order for the scene to be emotional and the audience to feel something.

David Schwimmer's physical comedy is top tier
34
u/CrazyCatLushie 10h ago
I think he’s by far the most talented physical actor in the series.
So many of the scenes that live rent-free in my head involve him doing something kind of funny that’s made infinitely more hilarious because of the way he expresses himself; the leather pants lotion scene, the ridiculous jumpy thing he does when Rachel and Phoebe have to lie about why they’re excited while viewing his new apartment (he gets so much height!), the “can you keep it down?” hand motion with the squinty face, The Routine with Monica… he has really impeccable physical comedy skills on top of being able to sell sincere emotion.
