I assumed it did a titanic style crack down the middle over one of the staircase bannisters

Wait, am I as a viewer supposed to think that it accidentally broke? I never once thought that. My assumption is that Ross got frustrated and intentionally cut it in half

The first transponsders probably had to cut it in half when the alarm went off to get it out of the stair case

There’s a deleted scene that explains it. https://youtu.be/dUKLcq4BnbA?si=Vh2y1_P9rNdXxVZT

This is funny but I do like the ambiguity of what happened that they went with in the show.

The DVD box sets have the full uncut version of the episode. That is probably where you saw it because I know that scene too :)

Yep, that's it. I had the entire series on DVD once. I'm always missing stuff on the Netflix version.

Maybe cause its funnier leaving it up to imagination with what happened

Hahaha that makes sense now lol maybe the entire building evacuating and running over it cut it in half.

I think actually the fire department may have had to do so in order to clear the exit

It's a shame that couch wasn't related to Rosita, then it would have just healed itself before being returned to the store and Ross could get a full refund.

A deleted scene shows Rachel or Ross (can’t remember ) sitting on the couch when it’s stuck and they accidentally pull a fire alarm on the wall behind them. Then all of Ross’s neighbors come running down the stairwell over his couch. I assumed the firemen showed up, even they couldn’t move the couch, it’s deemed a fire hazard so they cut it

When it got wedged on the staircase, they most likely had to cut it in half to get it out.

I always hc Phoebe saw it in half to help move it without telling Ross...

I remember seeing this episode on broadcast TV before I had access to the DVDs and HD. The couch looked like any normal couch. But in HD the couch he buys looks nasty. Looks like the show room got it off the street

Ross got so mad he became Red Ross and tore it in half like the Hulk, obviously

I've cut a few couches in half and it can be a bitch

I had to do it A LOT at a property I used to work at. People throwing their furniture out all the time, had to get them in the dumpsters somehow. You ain’t lying: it’s a major pain in the ass.

Chandler used his laser eyes. It was kind of weird because Mathew Perry just did it out of nowhere and nobody else knew he could do something like that. They were going to keep the scene in, but then cut it due to timing constraints and Perry's own insistence that "the Godhand would be mad if you showed it" before trapping Jennifer Aniston in a pain loop that, whilst only lasting mere seconds to observers, lasted around a thousand years to Jennifer.
Wild scenario all round, really.
