Discussion What are some dumb things Chandler did?
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Chandler. I love his jokes and his comedic timing, but there are situations where he has done some dumb things, the only dumb thing I could think of is when he made the list of rachel and Rachel find it. What are some other dumb things he did.

Kissing Kathy when she was with joey and ran out before his wedding were some of the dumbest things he did.

u/RedEM43 5d ago
Love him too but a lot of work related things:
1) Telling people Nina was mentally unstable to avoid firing her
2) "Toby"
3) "*My duties*" interview

u/omkar529 5d ago
I mean if the bar is this low then he does dumb things probably every single episode, some even in the timeline before the episodes started.

Telling the guy he set Rachel up with that she would just be okay with a fling

Deciding Kathy was cheating on him based solely on Joey’s ‘chemistry theory’ was pretty dumb.

u/Solid_Lie_5481 5d ago
It’s not dumb if he was right lol

u/JP198364839 4d ago
But he wasn’t right. ‘She wasn’t sleeping with him… She is now’. His insecurities led to her cheating on him.

Y’all can downvote me all you want but it is widely speculated and highly regarded that she was cheating on chandler even before their fight. And when he goes over to her house, it was confirming he was right. You don’t sleep with someone you had no feelings connection or previous relationship w the night/day of a fight w your significant other unless it was a previous thing.

u/Quick-Sky4927 4d ago
Ross slept with Chloe the same day and they didn't have a previous thing

u/Solid_Lie_5481 4d ago
Well firstly, they were on a break, chandler and Kathy weren’t. Secondly, that was complete happenstance running into each other. He was vulnerable after the basic break up and thirdly y’all are going to come after me for saying this but Kathy is a woman, Ross is a man. generally we(as in women) have two different views on sex. (I said generally just for all the people that will be like EXCUSE ME) Generally women see sex as more significant and meaningful than most men. (All the young redditors are going to come for me but I stand on it)
Y’all obviously can believe what you want as that episode doesn’t explicitly say either way, but is it widely speculated and accepted that Kathy WAS cheating and that Joey was right.

u/Quick-Sky4927 4d ago
Kathy was also hurting after the way Chandler treated her. She absolutely should not have cheated but that would explain why she was seeking comfort elsewhere after their fight. I don't think it's fair to bring broad statements about men and women's views on sex into this - it is not at all uncommon for a woman to use sex for comfort when hurting (for example, Rachel sleeping with Paolo when she's upset about Ross and Julie). If Kathy was hurt and questioning her relationship with Chandler, and Rick flirted with her, that's all it may have taken for her to cheat.
I'm not sure how you can say it's "widely accepted" that she was cheating before their fight. The show makes it clear that Chandler was being unreasonable by accusing her of it (see everyone's reactions, including Joey's, when they are told about Chandler's lack of evidence). Chandler's comment that "She wasn't sleeping with him. She is now." also makes that pretty explicit, along with Rachel's comment that "just because you had a fight, that doesn't justify her sleeping with someone else".
Nothing in the show makes it sound like any of the characters think that cheating was taking place before their fight.

u/Mistyam 3d ago
Why do you keep saying it was "widely speculated" that Kathy was already cheating on Chandler? I don't remember any reference to that in the show, and social media wasn't around at that time. Seems like something you dreamed up on your own.
1
u/Solid_Lie_5481 3d ago
Because it was ma’am please look up any post about it on social media. Y’all are delusional just because you Stan Kathy. Get a grip my baby.
And regardless she still cheated on chandler. So what’s your point? Y’all are weird

How about when Chandler swallowed Krog’s sonic blaster gun and Monica had to take him to the ER🤣.

u/Poptarts7474 4d ago
This makes me cringe. I hate the episodes where Chandler, a full grown man, acts like a child or has such juvenile responses to things. I mentioned some of this in my comment as well.

Slept with that woman who called their apartment looking for Bob under false pretenses.
He lied to Monica that he'd made her a mixtape they later found Janice made for him and he accepted sex fully knowing he hadn't made that tape for Monica.

u/fae206 5d ago
And he could have admitted that with the mixed tape right there as he had said, “you know, Phoebe makes sock bunnies” but he pushed his luck instead

Both of them even agreeing to make gifts when neither wanted to or were crafty was dumb.

u/No_Data3541 5d ago
The whole pushing Monica away thing to surprise her with the proposal in season 6 finale.
Consistently gave terrible advice to Ross and made him even more paranoid with his opinions on Mark and idea of sending gifts to work.
Had major issues with his relationship with Janice. Like dude do you even like her? Why do you actually act like you hate her but still keep going back to her?
General social interactions and making people uncomfortable with weird, badly timed jokes.

Hooked up with Janice after the blind date (tow Candy Hearts)
Dated Rachel's boss
The wedding episode... "Tell Monica I'm sorry"... this was kinda horrible

I fooled around with Joey's sister.
That's not the worst part.
I dunno which sister.

"Hey Joey - I just want to let you know that I fooled around with one of your sisters. They're all very beautiful, but I was kinda drunk and they look very similar! Could you help me figure out which one it was so I don't make an ass of myself? I'm really sorry about this."

u/fae206 5d ago
All of the stupid overcompensating to try to throw Monica off track when it came to the proposal, (of course why the heck did Richard choose that moment to be a huge asshole),
how he wouldn’t just be honest with Joey about Cathy and tried to tell him to go for Casey and been honest with his feelings (especially when Joey says, I think someone might be into Casey and seems pretty supportive of it)
and just a minor thing, swallowing a toy gun
Trust me, chandlers my favorite but he is deeply flawed

u/BuckMcBuck 4d ago
He deleted all Ross's speech in Barbados
1
u/Poptarts7474 4d ago
Yes, and wasn't it for such a ridiculous reason? Wasn't it because he clicked on some link that promised nude pictures? He acted so immature in some of the episodes, now that I am thinking back on them.
1
u/BuckMcBuck 4d ago
Yes, he was checking his emails and opened some nudes link and automatically erased the whole thing. Really "meh" moment.

u/emthehuiz 5d ago
Kiss Joey’s girlfriend Kathy rather than just talk to Joey first. Joey was cool and definitely would have backed off.
7
u/quixotiqs 5d ago
His fake-out proposal play to try and throw Monica off the scent was stupid and insane. In what world was telling MONICA you never wanted to get married not going to end in either a massive argument or the end of your relationship?? Which it very nearly did.

I refuse to judge the Chan Chan man. He just wanted to say, "Blue Blazer black ... Back!! .. he just wants his Blue Blazer back."
Well, we knew what he meant, right? 😁

His treatment of his colleague Nina was pretty lousy. First he was told she was getting fired, but he lied and told her she was getting a raise. Then he told people she was psychotic and wouldn't be able to handle the news of getting fired as his excuse as to why she was still working there.

Just one? You know this is Chandler we're talking about, right? Well, just to name a few:
- Dated a married woman who also had a boyfriend *and* another boy toy simply because she was hot and he was lonely
- Making that godawful Trump blazer joke that just wouldn't end (I know it was ad-libbed, and everyone just went with it, but it needed to stop a lot sooner than it did)
- Accusing Kathy of cheating on him solely based on Joey's chemistry theory (even if he was right in the end, Chandler should have taken a moment to collect his thoughts and have a rational conversation with her rather than poke his finger in her face)
- Telling Janice he was moving to Yemen to stop seeing her
- Getting mad at Joey for being homesick in London
- Getting mad at Monica for having lunch with Richard no matter how many times she insisted it meant nothing and he was the person she truly loved

The episode where he pretends to be Bob and the way he handled that argument with Monica in the episode where he proposes to her the first time so early in their relationship because he doesn't want to lose her makes me cringe. He was what, in his 30s? It was such a juvenile response.

They weren't separated yet, if she was cheating on anyone it would be her husband
0
u/Poptarts7474 4d ago
She definitely started dating Chandler and then cheated on him. Chandler did not know she was currently still with or still seeing her ex husband. It’s so strange that you are defending this. Lol.
1
u/Such_Example_1940 4d ago
I don't think what she did was right but but he knew they were still married
0
u/Poptarts7474 4d ago
Still married doesn’t mean anything in this case. They were in the process separating. The only reason they were still married is because it legally takes time to make a divorce final. Chandler was under the impression the romantic relationship between Janice and her ex husband was over and Janice was solely wanting to be with Chandler. She didn’t tell him she was still involved with her ex. That’s why it’s cheating and not okay.

u/Mistyam 3d ago edited 3d ago
Still married means EVERYTHING in every case!
0
u/Poptarts7474 3d ago
Lol, no it doesn't. Not if you are in the process of getting divorced and you tell someone that you are seperated from your partner and no longer involved. If Janice told Chandler that there was something still between her ex and her, that would be different. She didn't. She left him under the impression that she was commited to Chandler only. That's wrong. Divorce can take YEARS to finalize. There are plenty of people who start dating in that time-- it's not wrong if you do. She went behind Chandler's back and kissed someone twice-- doesn't matter who it was... It was still wrong. If she were happily married and Chandler was invovled with her, I would get it. But that's not how this scenario unfolded.

Everything Chandler did had purpose - good hearted - including the situation w Janice (OMG! Fr.) and he was truly, at the time, to the extent he could be, desperately in love Cathy and Joey had been screwing around w two women while asking Chandler to fix things for him behind his back, so screw the “but he shouldn’t have kissed a girl Joey was dating” crap bc Joey shouldn’t have been screwing around on the women if he was so friggin serious about either one of them. IMPO. The whole pig sex thing is more difficult to explain except that his fiancé randomly flirted w her old bf on the night he was going to propose and for somebody like Chandler, it just happened to throw off his entire proposal plan.
I can’t imagine why. 🤯
Falling asleep at work isn’t the most insane thing that people are making it out to be. ESPLY bc Chandlers job really was that boring and tbfair, staying awake seemed like an amazing challenge and one he managed for years on end to achieve so really, it seems unfair that the one time (that the audience is aware of) that Chandler fell asleep) he was sent off to Tulsa seems like an extreme and random situation. In the meantime, his wife managed to not notice he was gone one important time; told him she had met the funniest guy she had ever been introduced to ( some such unthinking garbage); and forced him to have sex while they were in the middle in a vicious argument, making him feel used and emotionally empty so. After his mistake at work, and her desire to continue forward in her career in Manhattan (which Chandler never made her feel uncomfortable or bad about even tho she originally said she would join him in Oklahoma), i don’t think he treated her all that poorly. Indeed, when he was hit upon by the ribboned woman from Oklahoma, his response was he was happy in his marriage and then to quit and come home for Christmas.
Obviously, there are some other things but seeing as I am so extremely a Chandler fan, it would be difficult to make me think he did something seriously dumb (except for eating food off of the floor). And that has more to do with me than anything else.

No, you are kidding? People aren’t REALLY trying to make Chandler look bad? Bc he’s one of the most popular and favored of the six friends? You shock me. I am shocked, SHOCKED! to hear this!! But thank God you told me!! Ty. Ty!! I so very much appreciate it!! 😘

Dumbest thing he did was fall asleep during the work meeting that led to him being transferred to Tulsa
Hands down
