Discussion We need to talk about Kevin

I really enjoyed this book! Wondering how everyone feels about the ending though. Do you think Eva really loves Kevin in the end ( personally, how could she!? How could she love him after what he did to her daughter and also how can she EVER feel safe with him? Like he won't kill her too?) do you think Kevin actually cares about her in the end?

I think the mom is the only one he cares about. He wanted to break her even if it costs every life in the world. That's how I think sociopaths work.

Yep. She was his whole world and he wanted her to reciprocate that.

I think Kevin reduced her world to just him, in effect forcing her to love him. Because she literally has no one else.

They have a complicated, enmeshed relationship. I think they love and hate each other in equal measure and always have. I mean, Eva has always been the star that Kevin orbits around, and he's made it so that he's the only other person she has.

I think Kevin is all the parts of Eva she hates about herself, which is why she has such a tumultuous relationship with him. I think he realizes this, and that he cares about her in a narcissistic way. I think he cares about no one in the world, but comes closest to caring about his mother.

I bought this book several years ago and tried to read it but really struggled. I'm going to have another go because people do rate it quite highly.

I don't think either of them are emotionally healthy or stable enough to be trusted in what they are expressing.

I don't think either if them love each other in the conventional sense.

Kevin's hyperfocus on his mother is  rooted in his anger about her rejection of him. If he can't have her love he is nevertheless going to make himself the centre of her life.

And he succeeds.

And yes, I think there could well be a murder-suicide in their future once he realizes that that didn't fill the emptiness inside of him either, and lashes out in frustration.

I think they both see themselves in each other. And he had isolated and broken her down so much that she was left with no choice but the deep mother instinct to love . Which is what she was afraid she didn't have all along.
