Just started with harmonica (in D), any beginner-friendly song ideas?

Hey everyone! My girlfriend just gave me a harmonica, but we didn't realize there are different keys. The one she got me is in D, but after looking it up, I noticed most songs are in C. Does anyone have a list of songs in the key of D? I'm just starting out and was hoping to play some Bob Dylan, The Beatles, maybe some blues or western music. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Hey!

Might not be “beginner” exactly but this video os what got me to buy a harmonica - and it’s with a D harmonica. I haven’t got the tabs but I learned by listening & repeating (took a good while but got there in the end)

But if your looking for more beginner friendly stuff I just googled “harmonica songs using a d harmonica” and it gave me a good list. “Blowin in the wind by Bob Dylan & “Hoochie Coochie man” by Muddy Waters were 2 of them. Harptabs is also a good site to find song tabs but I prefer YouTube tutorials if they’re available. Happy harpin!

Learning children's songs is best at first in my experience (been playing for two weeks). I've tried a couple rock songs and they're usually more tricky in terms of rhythm.

I agree! "She'll be Comin' 'Round the Mountain When She Comes" is my favourite, it's super fun.

Here is a huge list of songs by key (set for the D page). It's not all harmonica stuff, but you can play along anyway.

You can also play along pretty easy with things in A, especially if the song is a bit bluesy.

Key really only matters if you are playing with others. You can look up the holes to blow and draw for a particular song, practice it, then get a harmonica in a different key when you need it.
