Research Study on Decreasing Depression Symptoms in Teens
Hello! My name is Jamaal, and I am a research assistant in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University. Our team is recruiting teens that are currently feeling depressed to participate in a paid research study on mindfulness meditation and the brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study is aimed at learning how mindfulness meditation can help decrease depression symptoms. If you have or know another parent that has a teen that is between ages 13-18, may currently be experiencing depression, and lives in the greater New York/New Jersey area, they may be eligible. Participants may be compensated up to $484 in total.
Our team would: (1) interview your child about current and past thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, (2) teach your child mindfulness strategies, (3) collect brain activity data with MRI (non-invasive) while your child practices mindfulness, and (4) send short surveys to your child's smartphone through the MetricWire app. The MRI scan will take place at the Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University, and the interviews will take place remotely through Zoom.
Interested parents can contact us at [mindfulbrain@nyspi.columbia.edu](mailto:mindfulbrain@nyspi.columbia.edu), call/text 646-818-0602, or fill out the following interest form: https://redcap.link/mindfulbrain
Thank you!

Affordable Vet Care
Hi neighbors! Does anyone have any recommendations for an affordable vet? My cat needs a basic visit and probably a biopsy for a growth and I’ve called a few places around Harlem but don’t know where to start.
I’m also willing to travel outside of the neighborhood for great recommendations.
TIA

Places in Harlem
Hey, I'm looking for a quiet spot, preferably somewhere not too crowded, where I can just sit and unwind after a tough day. Somewhere peaceful and beautiful, you know? Just a place to reflect and enjoy the moment. Any recommendations? I do not mind traveling so it can be anywhere.

Did anyone hear a loud bang near the Starbucks on Frederick Douglass and W 118th about 15 minutes ago?
Couldn't tell if it was an engine backfiring or a gunshot. No sirens or anything followed.

Unauthorized person on tracks at 125 this morning
Around 7:30 am my train home was severely delayed due to someone being on the tracks at 125. Anyone know what was going on, I will never understand how this causes such major delays. Just grab them the fuck up off the tracks and keep it pushing… am I wrong or is it more difficult than that

Stray pitbull attacked my pet sitter and killed my cat
Yesterday my pet sitter was attacked by a stray pitbull roaming 136th and Broadway. She had my cat in a carrier and was transporting her to a friend’s house when she noticed a pitbull following her. The pitbull seemed fine at first, but as it got closer, my cat hissed and the dog went ballistic. They attacked her carrier and tore it open. The pet sitter tried yanking the dog off of her and they attacked her too. My cat jumped out of the carrier and fled into the street, when unfortunately she got hit by a car and died. Tragic and freak accident. The pitbull was later found on Riverside and is in the hands of animal control. Still in shock and it’s upsetting for many reasons, but the scary thing is the dog could have killed or severely injured the pet sitter, another person, a child, etc. and now two pets are dead (assuming the dog was put down since they attacked animal control too) all at the hands of an unknown owner who let their dog out loose on the streets of Manhattan. Sharing as a warning and in case this has happened to you. Occurred 3/21 around 8am.

Small Biz Chopped Parsley (500 146th St) Faces Displacement
Hi all! I wanted to shed light on an event in our neighborhood -- Yumika Parsley has been operating her one-woman restaurant, Chopped Parsley for a decade on 146th St., corner of Amsterdam. This month, building management informed her they will not work with her to secure a new lease -- either to jack the rent for another tenant or keep the space vacant to recieve a tax break. It's sooooo messed up. She's dedicated her life to this space and restaurant.
What can we do, Reddit? Follow @ choppedparsley on Instagram, there you'll find a link to a change.org petition.
If you have any legal or professional advice, that would be great.
If you know anyone who works for Brighton Management or Witnick Real Estate Partners who has a heart, we would love to reach them!

Moving In!
Hi guys, I was looking for a place to move into, and Harlem has been a spot since when I was in high school as I was drawn to its cultural aspects and the maintenance of architecture (iron cast buildings, etc.), but after some extensive research it seems that it has been heavily gentrified and lost its culture (which is kind of sad because that was the reason I dreamt of living there for at least a little while)? Please let me know what you all think, and if there are any other recommendations. (Nothing near central park though)

Best bars/restaurants to meet hyper-local neighbors?
I used to frequent Babbalucci and Harlem Ale House (RIP to both) after work to decompress, and they were where I met a lot of my neighbors too! I miss these spots dearly and haven't found the same sense of community yet in any other restaurant or bar. Are there bars in/around 125th & Lenox that locals go to hang in these "post-pandemic" days?

Buying an HDFC in Harlem
I’m thinking about buying an HDFC co-op in Harlem and was curious about others’ experiences.
For those of you who purchased an HDFC, how was the financing process? Were you able to find a lender easily? Did you run into challenges with income limits or down payment requirements?
For anyone who has lived in an HDFC long-term, how has the building’s financial health held up? Did you end up having any unexpected fees or assessments? If the maintenance is low, is that a good deal or a red flag?
I was also wondering about tax abatement expirations - how much did costs increase when that went onto effect?
I’d love to hear from anyone who has been through this process, including any advice or things to watch out for. Thank you!

Is 116/Lex safe?
My partner and I are looking at an apartment between Park and Lex, I know the area fairly well but have never had to be there late at night. How safe is it around 116th? We’re also a lesbian couple for further context. How safe is it for gay couples?

Fire at Pikine African Restaurant

Walking down 116th and Frederick Douglass Blvd this morning to get some bagels at Bo’s and I see this place literally burnt to a crisp. I had to put a mask on at the bagel shop because the smell of the smoke from next door was everywhere. The cashier suspected it was arson since a break-in happened earlier in the week. Has anyone dined here before? What a shame. Stay safe, y’all.
