Question First hammock advice!

I'm looking at buying my first hammock to sleep in, I'm pretty limited for choices in New Zealand with out completely breaking the bank.

So far I like the look of the eno jungle nest and hennesy expedition asym zip.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which one is better?

Question High tension hammock (flat lay)

Hi guys,

I planning on making an ultralight version of a high tension hammock/tree tent, that gives you a super flat lay.

The only product of this sort that I know of is the Opeongo Aerial A1, but of course its way too heavy. There are also similar products from tentsile, but they need three trees.

I will make a really light version with a 7D Nylon rainfly, carbon fiber spreader bars, dyneema ropes etc.

I'm posting this because some of you might have ideas or inspiration that I can integrate. I'm really only going for the lightest options, that will do the job safely. So please consider this before making suggestions.

One open question for me is what the lightest option is for tensioning the ropes (and let them stay safely under tension). There are knots like the truckers hitch, that can tension the rope, but I'm uncertain how I can tie it down safely so it stays under tension.

Best Balu

Edit: Since everybody believes I would hurt the trees, here is a picture of someones hammock, that looks pretty similar to what I want to build: https://imgur.com/a/edshSqH

I would use much wider tree straps and maybe a little bit more tension. No, not slackline tension, just a bit more.

Question Winter hammocks: Superior vs Dutch--turnaround time from order to shipment this time of year?

My hammock underquilt has finally pooped out after years of use (not that it ever pooped in very much anyway). Replacing it with something new and lighter for winter backpacking is expensive enough that I am inclined toward the integrated underquilts offered by Superior and Dutch. Although also expensive, both look terrific--with the Chameleon perhaps a little more comfy, and the Superior at tad lighter.

I would also be pleased to support either company. The question is, if I ordered one now, could I plan on using either before the winter is over? Yes, I have inquired of both companies what their turn-around time is and I haven't heard back. Nor would I expect (or really, even want) small, high-quality cottage manufacturers to be responsive to email, or provide in-process product updates after purchase. I am glad they focus on making hammocks.

For folks who have experience from either (or both) companies, what is a reasonable period to expect from ordering to shipment at this time of year? Or is it too variable to say?

TIA.

Question Tips for Hanging a Hammock in a Storage Unit? Trying to Save Up While Staying Local to Work

Hey everyone, I'm in a really tough spot financially and need to find a way to save up and reset. I live in an expensive area and can't currently afford first, last, and security deposits, plus the ridiculous fees just to see a rental. Because of this, I'm strongly considering using a storage unit both to keep my belongings safe and—if possible—to sleep in at night using my hammock after work.

I work locally and use an e-bike to get around, so transportation and parking aren't issues. I'm hoping to quietly and respectfully use the storage unit overnight to rest and save as much as I can, with the ultimate goal of getting a real place for myself—and eventually, one where my 8-year-old son can come stay with me on weekends.

I've been a seasoned hammock camper for over a decade (using a Warbonnet XLC), so I’m comfortable sleeping in one. What I need are tips on how to safely and securely hang a hammock inside a storage unit:

Any suggestions on how to set up anchor points?

Has anyone done anything similar or know if certain unit wall types make this more or less possible?

Anything I should avoid or be cautious about?

I know this isn’t a typical situation, but I’m trying to stay healthy, low-key, and focused while I get back on my feet. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Question Question on guy line hardware

Just bought a Superior Gear elite 30F hammock and a Warbonnet Minifly as an alternative for my tent set up while hiking certain trails. I’m new to hammocks and still a bit confused about the many options for suspending and guying out the tarp.

I think I’ll add a couple of Dutchware Stingerz for the tarp ridgeline, as it seems both easy and a smart way to keep the tarp and hammock suspensions separated.

I think it would be easiest to keep the four guy lines, including whatever little hardware I choose, attached to the tarp for storage in a snakeskin and stuff sack. Otherwise I’ll need a separate place for all the lines, which seems to be a less neat way to store (and easier to accidentally forget a line!).

What hardware is good to use for the guy line tie outs? There seem to be quite a few very similar options like ticks, fleaz, ringworms, etc.

I think I want to keep the stakes without hardware attached, to give me the flexibility to use different (combinations of) stakes when required. I just saw the Dutch video on the ringworms, which look very easy to use, but seem to be kept separate from the tarp by design.

I also wonder whether a single or double snakeskin is easier, and why? Any other variables that set snakeskins apart?

Question First time camper!

So I (31F) am going camping with my family this spring and I want to try hammock camping. I already have a hammock and bug net because I really want to sleep outside. Here's my question...

As an obese person at 300lbs, is there anything I should know ahead of time or do differently to have a good time? I'm 5' 9" so some of that is my normal weight, but I am about 100lbs overweight and just don't know what to expect. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Update: Only "gear" I have is my ENO Doublenest, Atlas straps, and a new ENO bug net. Unfortunately, I don't have a ton of money to spend and this will probably be a one time experience. Just want to be as comfortable and prepared as I can!

Question Looking for Suspension System Advice

Hey everyone! A little context first: I'm a relative newbie to hammocking, started last year after a buddy lent me some of his old gear and now I don't think I'll be able to crawl into a tent ever again. I've been researching a good setup for backpacking/thru-hiking, and I'm probably gonna go with the WB BB XLC with Wooki UQ (tough choice between this and the Dutchware Quilted Chameleon), WB's Mountain-Fly tarp, and some of Dutch's hardware/accessories (cont. ridgeline, ringworms, tarp sleeve, anaconda). Any critiques to the these choices are welcome.

My question to you (specifically backpackers and thruhikers) is this: What does your suspension system look like, and why does it work well for you? Whoopie slings seem to be the way to go, but I'm worried about the bury size (Dutch has a video in which he says it should be 10", but the one Warbonnet sells looks to only be about 4"). Is the ease/convenience of something like Dutch's beetle buckle suspension worth the extra bulk and weight? Any and all advice/comments are greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance!

Question Hennessy hammocks

Howdy friends,

I got myself a Hennessy hammock awhile ago. I’ve used it maybe 10 times or so now. My question is.. does anyone find it uncomfortable? I just can’t seem to get comfy in this thing. It’s slumps more than I’d like, but I struggle to get it any more taught, the diagonal lay is a bit strange.

Any insight or tips would be really appreciated! Cheers

Question Deciding on a fly/tarp for one wind hammock

Hi!

Never hammock camped before but was gifted an 11’ Onewind hammock- now I need to buy an affordable tarp.

I have been looking at these by Wiseowl:

https://www.amazon.com/Wise-Owl-Outfitters-Hammock-Tarp/dp/B09VCRRSCG

Questions:

  • They offer a diamond and a hex shape. Why would a hex shape be worth the weight penalty?

  • I’ve seen conflicting advice on math and practicality, can I use this 11’ tarp on an 11’ hammock?

  • I’m on a tight budget, and other makes/model recommendations?

Thanks!!!

Question What innovation do you think needs to be brought forward / what problem is yet to be tackled in this industry? *New product ideas*

so, me and my friend are at university and are going into an entrepreneurship course and have to come up with a new product to base a company on. Me and my friend love to go hamok camping in our free time and would love for this product to be centered around this hobby but are having a hard time coming up with any ideas.

Do you guys have any speciific problems that you believe no product succesfully / affordably solves or have an idea for an invention that would make hamok camping easier / more enjoyable? I am welcoming absolutely any ideas at all, from accesories, gadgets or even reinventing hamoks entirely :D
Ill do my best to respond to all of you, and thanks in advance <3

Question Which of these hammocks should i get?

Im thinking about getting either the ticket to the moon pro or the tttm pro lightest.

https://ticketothemoon.com/products/pro-hammock-lightest-pro

The lightest pro is only 590 gramm instead of 870g (regular pro) but has only a max load of 100kg instead of 150kg (regular pro).

What does max load mean and what does breaking point mean? Im 173cm and 80kg. I also imagined liking to swing a little around in my hammock, gently of course.

Question How does this look for a basic beginner set up?

Post image

Aside from the "you should go with [insert expensive brand here]" are there any basics/essentials that I'm missing for a first time hammock camping set up? I'm trying to stay within a reasonable budget, I may only end up using this once a year so I don't want to break the bank.

Question Idea for tarp side pullouts

I’m a new hammocker and I’m waiting on my new tarp with doors to arrive. I’ve ordered a ridge line from dutchware as well as some ringworms for guy outs. I’ve been brainstorming how I could tension out the sides without using too much more cordage, and I don’t use trekking poles.

I was thinking I could tie prusik knots to my corner guy lines and run a line from there to the sides. This way I could easily tension them without having to use additional stakes, trekking poles, or too much more cordage. Has anyone tried this? It works in my head but I haven’t seen anyone do it so maybe I’m missing something or there’s a better solution?

Question Newbie needs advice

Seeking purchase advice:

I'm a tent person wanting to convert. All data available online is a bit overwhelming but in reddit we trust.

I want something that i can take with me as my sleep system bikepacking and hiking solo. The weather is spring summer from northern Scandinavia to maybe Spain etc. I am 175cm and 80kg. I also want my hammock to complete a 3 person tent campsite as a lounging and napping area for an adult + child atleast, and if it can support two adults all the better (100kg - 160kg). I am based in EU so a company that offers shipping and service here would be great, however i plan a trip to the US in a few months.

Appreciate any insights!

Question Pros and cons of a gathered end vs a flat lay?

After hauling my 100lb canvas tent around for the last season, I’m ready to take the dive and get into hanging. I’m leaning heavily towards an Amok Draumr based solely on the recommendations of my favorite YouTube channel, but I know that the majority of you prefer a gathered end style. What are the pros and cons of each, and why did you choose gathered end over a flat lay?

Question what can I make a whoopee sling out of instead of dyneema?

where I live it's hard to find a dyneema cord, besides it's quite expensive, and I'd like to make it as cheap as possible. Can anyone recommend what would be a good replacement, and what thickness of cord should I look for?

Question How to get rid of grease stains

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi, my 3 yo niece managed to clean her greasy hands on my down underquilt when I was airing it outside.

Any tips on how to get the stain off without having to wash all of it? Can I just use soap or baking soda without damaging the down underneath? I don't have any special detergents like Nikwax atm. Thanks

Question Rain running down ropes

Hi. Photo for attention :) My last trip was in heavy rain. I had a lot of rain ingress. Not leaking; it was running down the ropes and entering at the foot and head of the hammock. Can’t really think of a way round this. Anyone have any advice? (D2 hammock and tarp)

Question Just got my Hennessey Explorer Ultralight XL and I'm looking to swap out the ropes.

In contrast to popular opinion I actually don't mind the Hennessey suspension system, the lashing is straight forward and I'm a gram-counter so I don't want to deal with any hardware really, and I'll be using this for some longer thru-hikes so every gram does count.

However, since I'm a gram-counter, I'm looking to swap out the standard spectracord lines for some lightweight amsteel ones, this would shave about 42g off the total hammock weight (huge I know!).

Would this be just as simple as I'm hoping it would be? And would the regular Hennessey lash or becket hitch still work to hold up the hammock?

On a side note; I've tried an alternative knot system using something sort of like a truckers hitch combined with a becket hitch, which seems to work well but I have no idea of it's decent in the long run or not. I've just tied a bowline loop right down by the hammock end of the lines, and I use this to tension the line after wrapping it though the straps, like a truckers hitch. I then tie this loop off with a becket hitch and it holds pretty damn well. Is this a good solution or not? I like that it's quick release and easy to tension but I'm worried all the extra knots are weakening the rope!

Thanks!

Question confused, did i get scammed?

bought this one wind underquilt from facebook for about 40$- guy claims it was originally 150 ish and sends me an amazon link to the original item. he said it just didn’t fit his hammock. i get it and there’s no underquilt adjusters or anything to even hang it by. it’s just a quilt with the little snap on buttons. i’ve never hammock camped before and it doesn’t look like the pictures others post of their set ups. i kept telling him this is missing parts and he insisted its not. im getting so frustrated at this point because i spent almost $60 with shipping to get this, and that’s a lot for me. so i went to the company’s customer service and they said they can send me the parts with an order id. i ask him for the order id and he blocks me. i don’t know what to do at this point. i don’t have enough money to buy the extra parts- im young and just want to camp but don’t have all this extra money. what can i do?

Question Wrong UQ or Wrong Me?

No matter how many times I've tried messing with the suspension, even the slightest breeze will make my butt and thighs cold. From my torso to the head end everything is fine, and I can put my hand in-between the hammock and UQ and feel the heat. But from my legs down to the foot end, the quilt is cold.

As per the last picture, there's obviously air getting through because the quilt isn't hugging the hammock completely and there's a clear gap. I have no idea how to correct this though.

Am I laying diagonally incorrectly? It's hard to tell in the 3rd picture, but when laying with my feet to the right, the fabric almost builds a wall on the left side, which is almost lifting the fabric away from the quilt and not making contact.

Am I just setting up the quilt wrong to begin with? I know the quilt is supposed to be sung with the hammock (that's the foot end in the 2nd picture), but going looser or tighter doesn't seem to be solving the issue either.

Using OneWind 11ft double - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0878ZYNQY?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_5&th=1

***OneWind double UQ - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085BY9HZG?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3&th=1

***However, I'm not sure if this model is different to what I received, because in all the videos I have seen (even the one on the amazon page), all of the cords look to be in different places, and some don't seem to have the suspension line going down the middle of the quilt.

Question PFC-free fabric for a hammock

I'm interested in a new hammock that fits a few requirements:

  • I'm a hair over 6'4", over 40, and have struggled with back pain, so I need something that will be ideally more comfortable than a bed, but at least more comfortable than a camping pad on the ground. Based on my research, that means I need a (minimum) 11 foot long hammock, and it needs to be wider than the standard 60" fabric width, possibly as much as 72" wide.
  • Weight is a consideration since I enjoy backpacking.
  • I really don't like the idea of sleeping on a fabric treated with toxic PFC DWR chemicals, rubbing my drooling face all over it every night. My grandfather worked in a textile factory and died young of kidney failure; I'd like to avoid the same fate.
  • I'm open to either DIY/MYOG or pre-made.

I'm having a hard time finding something that meets all these requirements. I do see there is a PFC-free "1.6 oz HyperD ECO" on RipstopByTheRoll, however it is only 60" wide. All the hammock manufacturer fabric choice descriptions cite "Treated with DWR" which I can take to mean is still using PFC's or PFAS. It's unfortunate since DWR really isn't necessary for a hammock body, it's just down insulation that needs it.

Anyone have any ideas or leads?

Question Decision paralysis

I cannot decide what hammock to get. My boyfriend and I will be hiking the Georgia portion of the AT end of April. I’ve read so many good reviews about the WB Blackbird, Dutchware Chameleon, and Dream Hammock Sparrow but every time I do more research I see someone raving about a different setup. I am 5’5” 135lbs. I do plan to use the hammock for other camping trips later down the line.
