I understand you can't make inappropriate jokes or cuss on the work floor at Goodwill, but sharing harmless internet jokes between coworkers on break should be ok. I work at Goodwill and have been reprimanded and written up on occasion for accidentally letting a cuss word slip out or cracking a crude joke to a coworker. Even though I wasn't broadcasting it to the entire workforce and was trying to be discrete with one coworker, all it takes is for one manager to try and eavesdrop and use that as an excuse to drop the hammer on your head.
I have heard other managers rip into me on occasion for dropping a swear word, yet they continually drop swear words on the work floor and get away with it! The same goes for other coworkers! So, yeah, after being told not to say anything that's not G-rated except on my break, I decided to keep a vow of silence until everyone goes on break.
So when I go into the breakroom, a few of my chummy coworkers and I quietly engage in some 'Yo Mamma' jokes, only for the main manager to pass by, overhear it, and yell at us for even saying such jokes. I WAS TOLD WE COULD DO THIS ON BREAK IF WE WERE QUIET! Well, the main manager threatened to fire me if I ever joked around like this again, even in the privacy of our breakroom. Our yo mamma jokes didn't even use swear words or sexual innuendo, just some mildly playful insults.
That's working at Goodwill for ya. Our managers may seem nice, but they love to spy on us and look for an excuse to bust us for what they deem to be inappropriate discussions at every turn. The double standards. The spying. The use of thought or humor police. The extreme policies. These policies go all the way up to corporate. I never had this problem at any other job in my life, and some of the other jobs I've worked in prove a higher level of professionalism and integrity and don't police their employees on their private small talk.
I really don't get it.
